purpleorchid Why there is a "`" in Hawai`i. It can be written both ways but it is written with a ` because ` means that their is a slight pause. So Hawai`i would sound like Ha-wai-e.

purpleorchid Hawaiian lesson for the day(: The Hawaiian language has 12 letters and one "symbol". They are a, e, i, o, u (vowels)& h, k, l, m, n, p, w(consonants)& okina which is this symbol "`". Also each letter has a specific sound. Like h sounds like hey.
