One of our favorite releases in the last few years is Ann Brashares heart-wrenching conclusion to the Travelling Pants series, Sisterhood Everlasting. But there’s something different about this finale: It’s not exactly a YA book. In fact, the characters we fell in love with back when they were in high school are all grown up. At nearly 30, Tibby, Lena, Bridget and Carmen have gone their separate ways. And when they are finally brought back together again, it is too late for a reunion.
You see, quirky Tibby with her filmmaking aspirations and commitment problems dies before the girls—women, now—make it to Lena’s Greece. We’ve seen death in the series before (come on, you totally bawled when Bailey closed her sweet little eyes for the last time). But a main character? Someone so strong and spunky, leaving us again, so young? Surely not.
(OK, YOU CAN LOOK AGAIN)
Even though we know boxes of tissues will be accompanying us to the theater, we’ll be lining up to see this one. It’s all about closure. While we can’t really classify Sisterhood Everlasting as a true young adult novel, it’s still the conclusion of the series. It doesn’t matter if you grew up with the books are just discovered them in a used book store. Everyone wants to know what happens to our favorite foursome, even if it rips our readers’ hearts to shreds.
