Mother’s Day is upon us, which means we’re thinking all about how awesome our mamas are. They’re strong, brave, inspiring and independent—all the things we want to be when we grow up. And yet, we can’t help but imagine what it would be like if a few certain book characters were the reigning matriarchs in our lives. Here’s our top-10 list…
Mrs. Weasley from the Harry Potter series
Move over, Harry and Hermione. Ron’s mama is totally ours. We love that this fierce protector jumps into the fray to fight Bellatrix when her daughter is in trouble. And her cooking? Darn, that stuff sounds delicious.
Sally Jackson from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series
Percy Jackson’s mom does everything she can to protect her son—and that includes marrying a terrible, abusive man to protect her child. And when she puts herself between the demigod boy and the Minotaur? Wow, mama. That’s gutsy.
Marilla Cuthbert from the Anne of Green Gables series
This austere woman originally wants a boy, but when precocious Anne skips into her life, she can’t bear to send her back. Marilla is Anne’s adoptive mother, and while the pair have to learn about the parenting relationship together, it’s clear how much love there is between them.
Marmee from Little Women
The matriarch from Little Women just might be the strongest dame we know. With her husband away—and injured—during the Civil War, she doesn’t just hold it together for her four growing girls, but she also does the best she can for her community.
Lady Eleanor from Ella Enchanted
Like many fairytale moms, Ella of Frell’s mother isn’t around for very long, but the more we read about her, the more we love her. Together, she and her daughter have silly secrets—they bake, they slide down the banister, they have a fairy godmother.
Helen Thermopolis from the Princess Diaries series
Zany, yes. Inappropriate, yes. But still, we adore Princess Mia’s mama for her frank discussions and her so-real “oops” moments. Although dating the algebra teacher? Yeah, not so cool, mom.
Aunt Peg from 13 Little Blue Envelopes
OK, not a true mother, but how could we resist claiming this fun-loving runaway as our own? When she leaves 13 little blue envelopes behind, she gives her niece the adventure of a lifetime.
Rachel Morgan from the Gallagher Girls series
A spy for a mom? Yes, please! While it might be a pain for your mom to also be your headmistress—and know everything you’re up to thanks to CIA training—it’s also pretty neat. Props, Ally Carter!
Alanna from The Song of the Lioness series and the Tricksters series
The head-strong, noble-born girl wanted to become a knight, and so she did, flouting the conventions of her time. She disguises herself as a boy so she can become Sir Alanna. In a later series by Tamora Pierce, she is revealed to be mother of Alianne, who wants to become a spy.
Alicia Cooper in The Probability of Miracles
As an adolescent, Alicia’s daughter Cam has been in and out the hospital, and her cancer diagnosis doesn’t look good. So ever-hopeful Alicia packs up her two daughters and moves from one magical place—Disney World—to another, Promise, Maine. There, the trio discover that some small miracles really do come true.
