Wow, I also just went through the same situation! You should choose whoever you feel will treat you better in the long-run. Have you ever been betrayed by anyone in either group? Which group accepts you for who you truly are? These are the questions you have to ask yourself. You could also tell both groups that you don't want to choose. If they are truly your friends, they won't make you choose.

If he has been saying Mean things about you and your friend he either is trying to get your attention or doesn't want you to like him. Also, I have heard a lot(and from my own experience)that going into a relationship with your guy friend can ruin the fun or your relationship. Keep talking with him, if he is saying Really Mean stuff, give up on the relationship, its not worth losing your best friend for. If the stuff isn't too mean, try to understand a boys mind, he might not think what he is saying is very offensive when it is.
I have two brothers and they say mean stuff that they think is just playing around.

I SOO know what you mean when you said you were 4 inches taller than him. Tips for the tall:
1. WEAR FLATS: They can be stylish and keep you closer to the ground
2. Shift your weight to one hip while talking to him, it makes a little shorter
3.If you plan on having a long conversation with him, suggest that you sit down to reduce awkwardness of looking down on him.
Okay, so you really like this guy...but so do your besties. Thats tough. Do they know that you like him? If they don't, I suggest telling them, if their good friends they will respect your major crush. This does not mean they will not stop liking him, but they may tone down some flirting with him if they knew. Im a twin and five of my friends like my bro and its pretty weird. Don't let a guy tear your friendship apart, girls will definetly be there longer. Two of my friends are fighting over him and are mad at each other for liking my brother and flirting with him.
So...does he like you back? If he doesn't and you want him too ask for some flirting advice, i've got tons.
Anyway, your right that a relationship with this guy may ruin your friendship. It's happened to me before and now we ignore eachother.
But its up to you to decide if you want a relationship with him, even if your besties like him and it might ruin your friendship...it all comes down to how much you like him and what you would do for him.

Okay,
1. How well do you know this guy? Does he go to your school? If you only liked him becuase he was cute your going down the wrong path. You deserve more than just cute.
2. Don't automatically think he didn't call you back because he doesn't like you. You might not know the whole story. The call could have gotten lost or his phone isn't working or he doesn't check his messages etc.
3. If you want to know if he has a girlfriend ask him casually so it doesn't look like your about to ask him out(unless you are...) Or ask one of his friends.
4. If you really want to go for him, first find out if he's single and then ask him in person. Phone calls can be decieving. Or just flirt and talk with him untill he might ask you out. But don't act to desperate.
5. If everything fails and your heart-broken(this probably wont happen but just in case...) listen to Ashley Tisdales "Delete You" really loud. Everyone goes through this stuff.
