Music lovers unite with The Lucy Variations

Sara Zarr’s new novel, The Lucy Variations, offers a balance of drama, music and self-discovery.

Regardless of her prodigy status, 16-year-old Lucy Beck-Moreau is unable to save her elderly piano teacher from a stroke. And then her own grandmother isn’t doing too well, and Lucy’s friend Reyna is having a tough time, too. What else could possibly go wrong?

Amidst the crises and distractions at home, Lucy strays away from the piano. She’s used to performing in enormous concert halls and reading reviews printed the next day. But now with her younger brother, Gus, taking the spotlight, she seems to have lost her thrill for music.

Did she really love piano, or was it the awards and competitions that really made Lucy practice? Sometimes it seems like quitting would bring her more attention than ever before. In between shuffling through pages of sheet music and leaving the craziness at home for coffee dates with Will, Lucy tries to find the girl behind the pianist posters and figure out who she really wants to be.

Lucy’s learning that it can be hard to live up to the rest of the world’s expectations, and sometimes you have to put yourself first. Find out what happens to Lucy when The Lucy Variations hits shelves tomorrow, May 7.
