Dance and family come to life in Taking Flight

Becoming orphaned at a young age and surviving a war to then be adopted and move to America sounds like something a character in a movie would go through. But for Michaela DePrince, it was real life. Not only did she beat the odds, this gal, who is only 19, is also living her dream of being a professional ballerina—and she’s writing all about it.

Taking Flight by Michaela DePrince is a memoir about this teen's life and how she can use it to inspire others. Born Mabinty Bangura to a loving family in Africa, both of her parents died at a young age due to war, forcing her to live with her evil uncle. Michaela was extremely smart and could speak multiple languages, but her uncle did not approve of her teachings and sent her to an orphanage.

Living in the orphanage wasn’t easy and most of the children picked on Michaela due to the “spots” on her skin caused by a skin disease called Vitilgo. Even though making friends proved tough, this chick eventually befriended a girl named Mabinty and together they became inseparable—so much so that they ended up getting adopted by the same family.

From the moment Michaela met her new mama, she knew she was finally where she belonged. The DePrince clan encouraged Michaela to reach for the stars and always supported her throughout her dancing (something she dreamt of doing for a while). From starring in the ballet documentary First Position to being the youngest professional ballerina in a company, Michaela has learned how to make the best of all her opportunities and overcome her past.

Michaela’s ability to speak out about her tough childhood and the prejudices that she still faces today is fascinating. And what’s even more inspiring is she continues to encourage everyone to go after their dreams.
