Dear Dave

BILL: This is why music was created. Play it loud. Smile, and keep the party short. You’ll be surprised how much you enjoy guys if you don’t have to actually speak to us and discover how dopey we are
DAVE: Bill’s on to something: Cut the chat, and cue the iPod. Before the big night, e-mail everyone for playlist requests. Just be sure to invite more girls than guys; otherwise, you’ll be jamming Rage Against the Machine all night.

BILL: Old habits are tough to break. Try giving up soda if you’re used to a daily Big Gulp. You’ve gotta decide whether the makeup/breakup thing is good for you. If you opt to move on, take it a day at a time. Set small goals, like seeing a movie with a guy friend.
DAVE: First of all, if even your friends are tired of this rocky relationship, you must be exhausted. It’s not up to your friends to decide if you should stay with your boyfriend, but people who are close to you can often provide valuable insight from their outsider point of view. However, ultimately, you are the one who has to live with your choices. Does going out, breaking up and reuniting with your ex (and repeating the process) really feel right? Up to you.

DAVE: Written communication can be special. I’ve learned more about some girls from IMs and e-mails than face-to-face encounters. Written emotions have the advantage of reflection and don’t come with the awkwardness of social interaction. Since your note was well-received, send another. Without blasting the other girl, mention some reasons you two would make a good couple.
BILL: A relationship should be about you two, not outsiders. Tell the guy you don’t care what other people think, you like him. See how he responds. If he’s more interested in the opinions of others, you’ve saved yourself some hassle by finding out early on.

Dave: Because he's a guy. But a variety of reasons could be at work:
1) There's always a chance-an ever-increasing one, by the way-that if he keeps up the flirting, he may soon find himself without a steady. So he's probably making sure he hasn't forgotten how to woo. Wooing takes practice. One cannot woo on cue.
2) Perhaps he's attempting to make his significant other jealous. Are you a friend of hers? Does he do it in front of others-or the poor girl herself?
3) He's a jerk.
Don't invite the attention and remember that flirting is usually harmless. Take it as a compliment.
Bill: Guys flirt because they can. The attention span of your average guy is only as long as the next moving object. Like puppies, guys have to be nurtured and trained. And scolded, especially if they chase after a car.
