Rush Hour: The Traffic Jam Game

Call me a nerd, but I’m a big fan of puzzle games—from Rubik’s Cube to Sudoku. My new favorite these days? Rush Hour!

I was first introduced to the game through my friend online and was totally captivated. I was even more excited when I found that there was a board game, too, that I could take wherever I go—which has proved very useful, especially in those crazy summer traffic jams.

In Rush Hour, you simply have to get the red car out of the traffic jam and out of the six-by-six grid through the exit. But of course there’s a catch. There are different puzzle cards that instruct you to place the other vehicles of different length on the grid. They’re placed strategically so that you have to continuously move them up and down, right and left to free the red car. And what makes it even harder is that you can’t rotate any of the cars (yikes!).

What I really like about this game is how it completely grabs your attention. When you first see each puzzle it seems easy as pie. But as the level gets higher and the expected number of moves gets lower, you just can’t stop until you get that red car through!

So next time you’re stuck in traffic, why not take out Rush Hour? Who knows? Maybe when you get the red car through the traffic jam, your car will, too!

What’s one board game you can’t put down? Let us know!

Crazy for Cake Boss

It's Monday night at 9:55 p.m. and I'm not going to bed any time soon! Why? Because TLC's new show Cake Boss is on at 10! My whole family crowds around the TV in anticipation for lots of laughs, as well as some “Ooos” and “Ahhhs” as we see what fabulous cake is going to be created this time.

Cake Boss is a reality TV show about life at an Italian family-run bakery in Hoboken, New Jersey. Dad Carlo, was the original owner and cake boss at the bakery but died when Buddy, his son, was a teenager. Buddy took over the business and has been running the place ever since.

Now, him and his brother-in-laws help with the making and designing of cakes while his mom and sisters take care of the rest of the bakery. There are also a few cousins, nieces and nephews running around lending a helping hand, too! And with so many family members in such tight quarters, of course there’s going to be lots of drama and excitement.

It isn't only about the baking, but the family's talent, artistry and drama too. Buddy and his crew make cakes for every event. He even made a cake for a celebration at the Natural History Museum in New York—a 3D replica of a new mammal that was discovered and being brought to the museum. From cakes that look like beach scenes and treasure chests to ones that replicate guitars and toy soldiers, you can see the real talent pouring through.

But what really makes the show dramatic—and believable—are the mishaps along the way, like cakes delivered to the wrong place or on the wrong day, or those that were destroyed en route to an event. Oh boy!

This exciting show is one for the whole family. I watch it with everyone, including my dad and 9-year-old sister. Next time your cuddled on your sofa on a Monday night, turn to TLC and watch Cake Boss. It’s delicious!

What family-friendly TV show satisfies your sweet tooth? Blog about it, babes.

Gossip Guru

Right now, Monday nights at 8 PM just aren’t the same. What would typically be a time reserved for homework, chatting with friends or chilling with the fam takes on a whole new meaning. During the normal TV season, every Monday night always starts out similar:  I clutch my cell, hop on the couch and a familiar voice toots, “Gossip Girl here...”

Gossip Girl is your typical drama. It follows the lives of fabulously rich New York teens with an equally fabulous wealth of problems. There’s Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) and Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick), an overachiever-meets-bad-boy pair that can’t seem to decide whether they love or hate each other. Then there’s Serena van der Woodsen, Blair’s BFF/frenemy. Throw some Brooklyn in the mix with Dan (Penn Badgley) and Jenny (Taylor Momsen) Humphrey, two middle-class prep school commuter—and fishes out of water—and you’ve got a juicy hour of nonstop drama each week.

My friend Rachel and I love watching the show at our respective houses, but we love dishing about the characters during commercial breaks over the phone. Don’t get us wrong, Gossip Girl has its outrageous moments that we just laugh off, but when we aren’t going gaga over Nate or Chuck, we’re drooling at the great clothes Blair and Serena are wearing (me Blair, her Serena), making a point to hit the mall as often as possible, incorporating some of our fave character’s style into our latest purchases.

Like a lot of things, we have agreements—and disagreements—on various aspects of the show. While I’m Team Blair (gotta love the preppy clothes and the overachieving--plus, I’m a brunette), Rachel’s Team Serena, citing Blair as too uptight and mean. And when it comes to the guys, we both agree Dan and Serena were pretty sweet and Blair and Chuck have their sparks.

But at the end of the day, literally, Gossip Girl is more than just an editor’s obsession. Sure, the clothes are great, and we both dream of having that Upper West/East Side apartment and wardrobe someday, dating our own Nate or Chucks, but the show brings us together for the time in-between. And in our busy lives, who doesn’t need a bit of R&R, an hour just to watch a show with your friend, even if she's miles away? To that we say XOXO, Gossip Girl!

Do you and your friends watch a fave show together? And are you and your bestie Gossip Girl fans? Blair, Serena, Jenny or Vanessa? Dish it out, chicas!

Movie Making Magic

My little sister Emily and I proudly admit that we are complete dorks. We’ve always been pretty tight, and ever since we were little girls, we would make home videos doing the most random and goofiest things.

And—move over Miley and Mandy—we even produced our own “Haley and Emily Show” right from our basement, with our friends and family as the audience. Our videos were filled with anything from The Amazing Race parodies to something as simple and classic as the two of us sneaking up behind our older brother and making ridiculous faces.

In order to make our videos, we had to hijack the family camera and rewind the tape to record over any mistakes we made. Our primitive shots had the production value of, well, two elementary school girls trying to make a video, which is what they were. But the collection of memories that we inadvertently captured made our family die of laughter, even years later.

Our movie making has been on hiatus since high school, but this summer (the first since my freshman year of college), Emmy and I have been bonding over the video bug again. Using her sleek digital camera and Windows Movie Maker (all of you Mac users can use iMovie), it’s way easier to make videos look more professional this time around.

We’ve been doing our own renditions of “I’m On a Boat” when we spent the day on our grandparents’ boat, along with a few other music vids. Emmy even got her friends in on the action when they recorded their own version of All Time Low’s “Weightless.”

The coolest part of making movies is seeing the finished product at the end. Emmy and I still laugh so hard that we double over at the desk of our computer—the very reason we continue to shoot videos.

So the next rainy sunny day, grab your siblings or friends and a digital camera, and start filming! At the very least you’ll come out of it with a couple of hilarious bloopers.

If you could make your own movies, what would they be about? Blog about it, babes.

YOU WROTE IT

It was a strange scent, faintly familiar, like the perfume my mother used to wear. The aroma lingered around me, smelling like dried sunflowers and a soft touch of the new spring air.
