Good-for-you changes to do RIGHT NOW!

1 Talking on your cell? Don’t sit! Walk around while catching up on gossip.

2 Put low-fat milk in your hot chocolate instead of water. A yummy winter treat.

3 Give Mom and Dad a break when you need to go somewhere. If you can get there safely on a bike or by walking, do it!

4 Put salsa or hummus on chips instead of saturated fat-laden dip. Swapping baby carrots for chips makes it even more healthful.

5 Hit the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. If the escalator is your only option, walk up instead of standing still (just be careful!).

6 Can’t live without sugary cereal in the morning? Go for it, but go halfsies with the more healthful high-fiber kind (we like Wheat Chex). You’ll get the taste you crave and a punch of nutrition too. Perfect!

7 Try DIY yogurt. Mix plain yogurt with the fruit of your choice. Add a little honey to make it sweeter.

8 Replace your morning OJ with an orange. Real fruit is packed with much more fiber.

9 Dress up your salad with peppers, mushrooms, nuts, dried fruit, chicken, pears…anything! So not boring and way better than plain old iceberg and dressing.

10 Clean your room! Not only will you feel fabulously organized, but it burns about 200 calories per hour.

WE TRIED IT: Work Up A Sweat

champ.jpg

Like your tried and trusty tee-shirt, I've never wanted to give up one of my worn-out track hoodies that I've been wearing on runs and to the gym for years. But Champion's Super Hood, may have changed all that.

Champion's new line, "How You Play," focuses on everyday sports and fun stuff for girls like you and me. The Super Hood is made out of premium heavyweight fabric (unlike my ancient school-issued sweatshirt), and it's also thick and durable (fine, fine there is a hole on my favorite hoodie's sleeve).

Bonus? This hoodie's got oversize pockets for my ever-present iPod, gym ID and keys. It's also oversized-so I still feel like I'm wearing my good old two-sizes too big hoodie. The Super Hood even comes in my fave color-pink (goodbye ugly school colors)!

The verdict? Looks like I've got a new hoodie to keep me cozy and super cute on my winter runs!

IN THE NEWS: Healthy Bones, Healthy You!

milk.jpg

When was the last time you hung out outside with your girls? Have you had a glass of milk today? Do you participate in gym or an after-school sport?

According to a recent article in Yahoo News, if you answered NO to the above questions your bones may be at risk! Doctors are finding that too little milk, sunshine and exercise is leading to softer, easily breakable bones. For some kids, this lowered bone density can lead to more serious problems, like rickets. Rickets is a disease where your legs become so soft that they bow. Other problems, such as an earlier onset of bone-cracking osteoporosis, and increased bones fractures, are also going up. Bone fractures in girls are up 56% from four decades ago!

So how to make sure you're safe? Get enough calcium, sunshine and exercise! Put your fave songs on your iPod and go for a run outside. Meet up with your pals for a game of outdoor soccer. Dance around your room. Have a bowl of whole-grain cereal with Vitamin D fortified milk. Ask your rents or doctor about taking vitamins with calcium and Vitamin D supplements. Make a super smoothie with milk. You're bones will be feelin' super strong in no time!

WE TRIED IT! Ballet

ballet.jpg

Worried about staying in shape during winter? Too cold to run outside? No worries! I've got a solution for you, chickies! Do leotards, pink tights, tutus and bunheads ring a far off bell? Of course it does! I've brought back the good old days of my ballerina youth by taking ballet classes twice a week. You don't have to be five-years-old to take ballet!

It has def gotten me into shape over the past few months. My classes are filled with plies, jetes, leaps, pirouttes and lots of stretching! My muscles get to try new things every class and I toootally love it. It's such a fun and refreshing activity because you can really feel your body getting worked. My legs and arms have definitely toned up with all the repetitive exercises. I've gotten into the habit of stretching outside of class and I love how flexible I am now!

Although it's a fun way to get in shape, ballet is also a strict and serious type of dance. It's not like hip hop where you can express emotions in any way you want. There are specific ways to stand, pose, point and twirl. Classes can also get a little pricey, but it's def worth it if you're willing to give it your all!

If you're up for something new and intense, ballet is totally for you! You don't have to have prior experience. Just head down to the closest dance studio and sign yourself up for a beginner's! Have fun, ladies!!!
