MOD!!!! I babysit for a brother and a sister. The brother thinks he can play with is sisters toys but she can't even think about touching his& he always calls her names. So I always have to get on to him. Also the sister always wants to play with me and he never does. But he thinks I don't like him. I heard him talking to his sister in her room when i went to answer the phone saying that I hate him and likes her better and that always happens to him so he's going to tell his mom to get another sitter. It's not true! I told him that! How can I fix this and make it better? I feel bad that I always get on to him. If the sister does something I get on to her too but it's just not as often as the brother. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!

 

Hey chica! Unfortunately, little kids can be so hard to deal with sometimes. I would start making an effort to give the boy more attention. I'm sure you already do, but maybe ask him if he wants to do something you know he likes. Just make it seem that you really care and are interested in hanging with him too. Hopefully, that'll help somewhat. If not, I would definately talk to their mom and let her know the sitch!

Hey girl! Let them know you love babysitting for them, but you don't usually do it for free.  Let them know what you charge ahead of time so that way it doesn't happen again.  That's strange and a little rude of them, so they may feel embarrassed when you point out their behavior.

My major babysitting dilemma is that our family friend's always have big parties with tons of kids, and their daughter, Abby, is younger then me and she always tells people that I am a certified babysitter so they can leave their babies and kids with us. At a party, I would much rather be playing baseball in the yard or whatever, but she uses me to make people leave their kids with me...I don't think she realizes it though...

Mod, I am now a certified babysitter because I took a course. I'm very excited to start babysitting, but I can't seem to find a job that I can actually work with. I tried giving out fliers, but almost everyone in my neighborhood already has a parent to take care of them. I don't have a Facebook, Myspace or Twitter so I couldn't post anything on there. I did recently find job that sounded nice. A little 2 yr. old boy at a larger house. It sounded like the parent would pay well. I would work from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The only problem is my mom would have to drive me 30 min. everyday to get there and 30 min. back. She refuses! But I don't blame her. Is there any way possible to get this job or find a better one?

 

I can't think of any other way for you to get there, so you'll probably have to pass on this job. How did you find that job? Maybe you can find another the same way. Or, maybe you could ask your mom if she knows of anyone close by who might need a babysitter. You could also look into a local child care center and see if they are looking for extra help. Talk to them about when and why you want a break, but make sure that you tell them far in advance so that they can schedule for another sitter if they need one.

MOD MOD MOD I babysit a lot, and last night I babysat for my band teacher and they gave me $60 for that night and tomorrow too. She said she'd give me more if they went over, but they already paid me the equivalent of $7.50/hour! I normally charge $5 an hour because I'm thirteen. Should I say something? MOD!!!! Im almost 13 and ive been a certified baby sitter for a year. ive tryed EVERYTHING to get clients...and ive only got 1 so far but their dad stays home now and they dont need a babysitter. Ive tryed sending flyers to neighbors and they said theyll call me if they need me but nothing my mom put flyers up at her work and at our chruch and iv talked to people at our country club and STILL nothing. i love kids and would love to babysit.PlEASE HELP!! ****MOD MOD MOD*** I have a huge problem!! Okay so a few months ago I took a babysitting job down the street... I was supposed to babysit 1 two year old for eight hours for $40= $5 an hour. But when I came in the house! There were three kids! A two yr old, a three yr. old and a six yr. old. I made lunch and took them to the park twice and not to mention the dirty diapers. The youngest even called me the B word. When all was said and done I only recieved $40!!! I was mad. I never want to babysit them again. But they keep calling! I either ignore them or make up an excuse.. but i cant keep doing this... HELP!!!!

No need to ignore them, just explain next time they ask you that your rate goes up with each child. Make sure to ask them how many children will be there. If you get there and there are more children than agreed upon, say something right away. 40 dollars for 3 children for 8 hours is definitely not enough. Speak up next time, girl!

Hey girl!  Eleven and 1/2 is a bit too young to babysit.  Sorry.  But if you need to make some cash, look into babysitting or doing chores for parents while they're working at home.  That way, you can help them out and still have an adult around in case of energencies.  best, Kristen

Hey girl, if you're unsure what to charge, you can always have the parent set the price. A good standard rate to go by is $7 an hour, but depending on the number and age of kids, this could go up or down. Hope this helps, girl--remember, choose a price that's fair to the 'rents.

Hey girl, the common pay for babysitting can be anywhere between five and fifteen dollars an hour - it all really depends on the family, your duties, your skills, and how long you'll be watching the kids. A good place to start would be between five and seven dollars an hour. Don't be shy to ask them what they would like to pay you if you aren't completely sure.

Hey babe, I guess it depends on your responsibilities and how many hours you're there. Talk to your family and other friends who babysit to see what the going rate in your town is. Don't be afraid to ask for a raise if you feel like you need one. You're the one giving them a service so don't forget that!

You should talk to their parents to figure out what they feel comfortable paying (because sometimes it's higher than you think!) but I think a good ballpark number would be around $30.

Okay, so I really want to start making money, so that I have it to spend on stuff like clothes, and when I go places with my friends, but I'm only thirteen! I plan to put up flyers for babysitting at my church soon (I've taken a Red Cross course), but if that doesn't work, what could I try?? Where I live, in places like ice cream parlors, restaurants, Starbucks, etc all seem to have like 16 years+ age people who work there, so I don't think they'd hire a thirteen year old? Hey girl!  It does not hurt to ask if your local shops hire thirteen year olds; probably not, but what do you have to loose?  You can try pet-sitting if you are into animals, or even jewelry-making if you are feeling crafty.  Try asking your parents and family you can help them do household chores for a little cash.  Good luck!  Kristen

Hey, i really really really want to babysit! I'm turning 13 in December and i'm going into 7th grade this year. I started handing out flyers when I turned 11. I'm really sad that I haven't gotten one call. Not One! I just got new next door neighboors and they have a 2-year-old son. I told them that I really want to babysit and they said that when they need me, they'll tell me, but they haven't said anything. Also, one of my other neighbors has a son going into 2nd grade. They have some kind of Rewards card and they get discounts when they go to the movie theather on Tuesdays. They told me that it would be a big help if I babysat their son when they went to adult movies on Tuesdays. I was sooo excited!! But, every Tuesday they end up never calling. It's been weeks! I know that probably something came up and they couldn't go, but I'm started to think that they aren't really going to call. I don't want to be pushy, but what should I do??




Hey babe,

It sounds like you've done a lot to get your name out there, so all you can do for now is wait. You can try asking your friends if they know of anyone or if they could put up fliers in places you haven't thought of you, but until you get a call, just be patient! You'll find a client eventually.

**MOD** okay, im going to be babsitting for this one-year-old boy for the first time soon, ive played with him a couple times. he loves me, and is so sweet and really smart for 14 month old. His parents have alot of money. and asked if id feel more comfortable babysitting him in the house or on the boat. and the boat is a yaght with a bedroom and bathroom and stuff. i said id start with just the house but eventually i do want to try sitting for him on the boat. and by that i think they ment just me and him on the boat in the dock (not floating in the middle of the lake) are their any rules for watching a baby on a boat? (he can swim and float on his back, the boat is baby proof but i still want to be careful.) also they said while at the house I can bring him into the jacuzzi cuz he likes to jump in off the edge and swim around. any tips for that? thank you and sorry that this is so long.

 

The best thing to do once babysitting on boat is to be VERY careful and keep your eye on him at all times.  You may want to invest in taking a lifeguard class to make sure you water-savvy skills are up to par!  Good luck girl!

I babysit these 2 kinds 5 & 8 and Im supposed to get 6$ an hour. Since they live bout 30 minutes away from me. Since it's an hour away I figured they would pay me for my travel time but for 4 hrs (including travel time) I only got 23$. It's pretty close to our agreed on price but on top of that the kids were impossible to control, super annoying, didn't listen, & always fought!!! I agreed b4 I babysit them the first time to do it again but how can I politely ask for 7$ an hour including travel time...their kinda poor but they know their kids are hard to handle! My crush usually gets paid 15-20$ an hour but he babysit in a wealthy neighborhood... Please please help me! Brittney




Hey babe,

They probably haven't considered paying for travel time, which most families don't do anyway. You also have to respect that they might not be able to afford to pay you more. You can hint that the kids are being trouble and maybe they will give you a bonus for it, but I think it would be rude to ask for more money, considering their situation.

Yesterday i sat for 6 and she gave me 70$ i told her that wasn't nesseery but she insisted... i usealy charge 2-5 $ per hr. what should i say,,,,, she does this all the time and her kid is a quite 9 month old who sleeps are the time

I get 10 dollers an hr for three kids that are 6 and 6 (twins) and 8. I kinda feel like there paying me to much because the kids are really good and easy to handle and I would rather be able to babysit more for less than less for a little more $ because in the long run i would pry make more money and i dont mind babysitting. Whenever i try to tell her its to much she insist i keep it and i end up feeling bad because most of the time she really does need a babysiter. how should i tell her that i really dont need that much??? thank you.

Hey girl, it really depends on your experience. If you've done babysitting for a while and the parents know that you should be able to ask for $7-8. You also have to take into account what hours you're babysitting and how the child behaves. <3 Jeannie

Hey girl! 

A lot of times, girls can struggle with talking to adults and can get embarrassed, and you're no different! Talking to adults is just something that will become easier with practice. However, you can work on it by practicing on your own parents by pretending that they're the parents of the kids you babysit for - practicing will make it easier for when it comes time to actually talk to the parents. I always feel really awkward about like talking about pay and stuff and unless they bring it up, we don't talk about it and they usually just pay a pretty good amount at the end of the night(between $5-$10 depending on the times and stuff, if I did it in the middle of the day on a wednesday in the summer for only 2 hours while they were home just to keep them entertained, then only like $5ish per hour, but if it were for 5 hours babysitting three kids late at night, I would get paid like $8 or $10 for each hour the kid was awake then once they go to bed itd be less...usually the clients are pretty good about figuring it out and they tip sometimes too. I don't mind late nights and stuff but it gets tiring and I don't like to fall asleep because one time I did and I woke up to the kid next to me watching tv at 11:30!!! Good thing the parents weren't home.

Hey girl!  Since you're a little younger, you and your bff could try babysitting together.  Start off with one or two kids rather than a ton so things don't get out of control.  Parents are more likely to hire you if you are willing to go to their house because that is where their children will be most comfortable.  Also they will have the appropriate foods and toys there to keep the kids occupied.  Ask around your neighborhood and family friends for suggestions and advice!  good luck, Kristen

i had thee worst babyitting job ever. my neighbors have 1 3year old son and they called me one morning frnatically looking for a babysitter for that night. i said yes. little did i know, they were throwing a party (theyre very young) and all their friends brought over their young kids, all between the ages of 1 and 7, too. so i thought i would be watching 1, when i was watching 7. they were partying upstairs and i had to keep the kids in the basement. oh, and guess what else? THEY ALL SPOKE SPANISH.and for a five hour, 7 child gig that i didnt even expect, i got paid $40. plus, one kid hit his head and wouldnt ssay anything for the rest of the night, so every1 thought he got like badly hurt. but i feel like i definitely deserve more money. next time they call, im busy (they did the same thing to my sister).

MOD well, me and my sister are babysitting for ppl for the summer. i take one week and then my sis takes the next week, etc. well we get paid 25 buck a day for two kids for about 730-415. at the end of the week the person who is babysitting gets 125 bucks. is that a little cheep? my dad thinks it is. idk what to do. thanks for helping! one time i was staying with a friend, adn as we were getting readdy to go to a basketball game to watch a parent called her mom and was wondering if we could watch her three year old sun untill 12:30 am. we went adn got there at six, so we stayed for six-adn-a-half hours. when we left, we were paid $40... is that alot???

It depends. That's about $6 per hour. Since you guys have to split it, that makes it about $3 per hour. It seems pretty reasonable, though, because it was 2 of you watching one kid (so the work wasn't as hard). Next time, though, clear up how much you're getting paid before you babysit!

i had a really hard babysitting job once, the 7 yr old boy had a disability and was known 4 randomly leaving the house without asking, the little girl had a peanut allergy (which was one of the few things the boy could eat) and the baby would not stop crying!!! it was really overwhelming but i think i handled it well. i got 45 $ for sitting for 5 hours.

I babysit for these really rich people, and they have 4 kids. The ages are 1 year, twins that are 2 years, and a girl who just turned 5. Ive been babysitting for them for a while, and I used to ask for 5 dollars, but they just started giving me 10 dollars (an hour). The kids are reay spoiled and if i dont give them what they want they scream and cry and run away, so its hard. I normally baby sit from about 6:00 (pm) to 11:30 (pm). I used to work for them about 8 hours a day everyday during the summer and they only gave me 5 dollars an hour. They want me to do that again this summer. I would be a mothers helper when I did that (she would be there but i would sit in the car with her kids while she shopped) Is the 10 a good price for babysitting them and 5 dolars good for when i am a mothers helper? its really really hard.

Ten dollars is good for babysitting.  Maybe ask for $6 dollars to be a mothers helper. -lauren

mod ok i'm pretty new at babysittnig. i mostly did this house hwere the rents gave me whatever they felt like. in our neighborhood, kids charge 6-10$ and the pros, ppl who actually do it for a living, charge 10-15$/hour. i said i'd babysit for a new neighbor (its the 1st time in the 'hood to need one) and he asked how much. i figured an average of the nieghbordhood sitters and said 7-8/hour. i' afraid he'll think i'm asking too much. help! also, u know how u r not supposed to leave the kids alone? what do u do if u hav to go to the bathroom? i try to just go right before i leave, but hwat if that dosent' work?

 

Hey girl! I think $7-8 is a great price. They shouldn't feel like you're charging too much. Try to go to the bathroom right before you leave and if you're putting the kids to bed, try to wait until they go to bed to use the bathroom again.

I get paid like 20 dollars for about 4 hours for 1 child who is 6. She has hearing difficulties and has a cocliar implant [i dont know how to spell it! sorry]. Also... I helped this girl's mom that lives down the street. The girl has Cerebral Palsey. She is in 3rd grade. I got paid like 8 dollars for 2 hours. I would just fold laundry, help with dinner, help her with hw...etc. The parents should decide the rate and amount I think.

My mom thinks im not responsible with kids because me and my sister fight a lot. we only fight because, well, all sisters fight. when im with other kids, they always say im their favorite. I have a mothers helper gig over the summer, but its for my aunt, (she has 2 sleep durin the day cause of her job) and I want 2 expand. Please, tell me how 2 expand my biz so i can get some $$$$!!

At first, charge a small amount of money per hour. For one kid, maybe $2-3. If there are two, $3-4. If there are lots of kids, charge $2 a kid per hour. Most likely, you'll get tons of biz and the parents will give you a raise! Remember, DO NOT ASK FOR A RAISE! And, start small.
