Three Fab Reasons to Try Yoga

We love yoga as a way to tone up, decrease stress and improve your flexibility. But the practice has stretched in sooo many ways, there’s...

I totally love doing Yoga, but my mom says I should quit it and do other sports!I do have a variety of sports.I jog,ice skate, weight lift, rock climb, skip rope and going to try Archery soon!Anyway,my mom says that Yoga won't do me any good and it won't help me "Shape Up" honestly,I don't want to shape-up! I just do it to have a healthy lifestyle.I don't mean to offend my mom but she barely does any exercise but gives me a whole lesson on how Yoga is just slow movement and the weight loss thing is fake!I love doing yoga,so I know I should keep doing it!What do you think?

Hey girl,

I would talk to your mom about the reasons why you love yoga and that you really like having it as a part of your routine, even if it isn't as intense as the other sports that you play. You could explain to her that you also do all of those other sports you listed (which is a lot!) and that you really want to do yoga, too, even though it isn't really a cardio activity. You can offer to hear her side too, but hopefully when you explain how much you love it, she will be OK with you continuing to do yoga.

MOD!!!
I have got a problem.
I have a big stomache and its embarassing.
When I look online for clothes, I say oh cute! but then, I realize... I wont look good in that. Is there a way I can shrink my stomache before school starts in like 15 days?!!!!
HELP!!

Hey chica,

The best weight-loss/body changes happen gradually, so you might not see much of a difference in a couple weeks. But that's no reason not to try to get healthy! Try cutting the bad stuff {junk food, candy, over-eating with too many helpings of dinner} and eating healthy, balanced meals with your fam. Get active every day - for at least an hour, play basketball with a friend, go for a brisk walk or even a jog around town, or follow a kickboxing tape in front of the TV. And search for tops that work best with your figure, like we all have to do. Blouses and dresses with empire waists {think: the babydoll style} are perfect for ya right now!

Hey! That's a good start but everyone's different. Sometimes it can take up to 6 months for you to see results from a new workout and sometimes it goes faster. It also depends on how many you do and how often. Good luck!

Every yime I put on my sunscreen it burns my face! I then got sunscreen specificly for my my face and it still burned! What's wrong with me?

Hey girl, I'm not sure- maybe you have sensitive skin... you could try to look for a sensitive skin suncreen. You could ask a dermatologist if there's a sunscreen they might be able to give you that won't burn your skin.

MOD MOD MOD!!!!!!!!! ok so over the past yr my weight started at 110 then to 112 to 107 to 106 to 108 now and now i'm at 104-105..... i'm training for fall sports on our eliptical machine at least 5 times a week and last week i was 103! now i'm 105 again (i'm 13 and 5' 1'') my goal is 99lbs but 101 before school starts(aug 30) how can i shed those last few lbs by then? ik my weight is healthy but i have a tummy... =[.... help please!!! thanks! ps... i got my "." a year ago and it came every month until april and i've only had it once since then.... and that was barely considered one. could it be because thats when i lost a lot of weight(soccer) or what? and could i have gained that lbs bac cuz i'm about to get my "."? help!!!! srry if this is the 2nd time i posted this....... my computer crashed when i first tried...

Hey girl, I'm sorry to hear about the body troubles.  Instead of focusing on a specific number, it's better to focus on being heatlhy and feeling good.  Especially if you are active, it's really important to make sure you are eating enough to get the nutrition you need.  Weight can affect your period, so it would be a good idea to let a parent or adult you trust know so they can help you keep track and make a doctor's appointment if necessary.  Instead of focusing on your weight or the body parts you don't like, focus on what you do love about yourself and your life.  You are a beautiful, amazing chica, and you deserve to have fun, not think about losing weight!

What are some cheap yoga DVD's that are good for beginners? At Target or Walmart, please. Thanks!

Hey girl, Target and Walmart all have big selections for $10 and up, so I'd suggest going to the store and reading the back descriptions with your mom. Find a tape that has beginner workouts and even research reviews online from people who used them.

MOD MOD MOD
hey im training for a triathlon but i havent been doing very good... well im thinking on getting up at 6:45am eat breakfast, then train till 8, and then go outside (bike, swim, run, walk, etc) for about an hour some other time in the day, five days a week. do you think that is good? too much?

Hey chica,

I'm not a trainer, so I would suggest just making sure you create a schedule that you will stick to! Are you really going to be able to get yourself out of bed at 6:45 every day? Be honest with yourself and make your schedule based on your own strengths. Also, it helps to make it fun and not boring - mix it up by doing different types of cardio each day! Triathlons are really big events though, so to make sure you're doing all you can to prepare, try asking someone who has done one before. Check in with a gym teacher, a trainer at your local gym, an aunt who has done one, etc. People who live athletic lifestyles will definitely help ya out!

MOD- Thanks! We really don't have the money for family counseling and my mom's already tried suggesting it, but he says it won't help because he has his mind made up. Gah, I guess I mostly needed to vent. Thanks for your help.

My most urgent question is whether or not you think I should demand going to the lake tomorrow? The only one who cares is my dad and I wouldn't be going for him anyways.

by Jen on 8/7/2010 10:47:25 PM

MOD- My dad would prefer that my mom and I both not go. What do you think I should do? I think it would be awkward to have my mom there when the Kells know the situation and he JUST filed for divorce and practically maimed her, but she doesn't want me to go without her. I've always wanted to go water skiing, though, and I miss my friend. Plus, all my other friends are busy this weekend anyways, so I'd be stuck at home bored to tears while my dad and brother are out having fun with our friends.
Any advice you have is very much appreciated. Thanks a ton!!

Hey girlie, I would see if you can every together for family counseling I know your parents are divorcing but they should try to be on the same page and civil for you guys you and your brother.
Paige T.

by Jen on 8/7/2010 10:37:04 PM

MOD- My dad has involved our close friends, The Kells, in this whole situation. He even has Mr. Kell on his side. Mr. Kell provided him the apartment he's in right now and my mom read an email that my dad sent to Mr. Kell from a few months ago when my dad decided to postpone filing for divorce and he said, "I know you'll be disappointed in me, but I've decided to wait to file". It seems like Mr. Kell is encouraging their divorce!
Well anyways, Mr. Kell asked my dad if he wanted to join them tomorrow at the lake and my dad asked my brother (since my bro is on his side) if he wanted to go. The Kells have a daughter my age and they're going water skiing and it sounds like so much fun, but my dad doesn't want me to come because he's mad at me for the "I hate you." text (understandably, I guess). I want to demand to go because she's my friend, but I'd prefer not to be around my dad anyways, and my mom doesn't feel comfy with me going w/o her because she's afraid of what my dad may do.

Hey girlie, wow there is a lot going on with your family right now I think you should definitely sit down with both your parents and tell them what an awkward position they are putting you in right now. I understand your dad is upset about the text but he's your dad and he'll get over it cuz your his daughter and he loves you. Maybe you could recommend family council so it won't be so divided anymore
Paige T.

by Jen on 8/7/2010 10:33:35 PM

MOD- After that whole incident I texted him, "I hate you." and he left me a voicemail saying he loved me and thought I felt that way because I only got my mom's side of the story. Also, the Friday before my dad left for Iraq (he left on Tuesday) he called me to ask if I wanted to get together, but I didn't get his call until late at night so I decided to call him back the next day. Well when I woke up my brother was leaving the house to stay over at his new apartment for a few days with him. That night I went over because I knew I was busy on Sunday and Monday and I wanted to do something before he left, and he COMPLETELY ignored me even though he was home. They even admitted to knowing I was trying to get ahold of him, but they find my mom annoying and didn't want to deal with me if it meant dealing with her too, so they just ignored the 500 phone calls and 50 rings on the doorbell. (I'll finish this in one more post)

Hey girlie, I'll wait on the last post before I respond but I'm not sure what "After the whole incident" is referring to?
Paige T.

I want to join Gymnastics this year! But I heard its harder for you when your older, I'm 11! And I want to join it to become more flexible and be able to be fit and do cool tricks! But my 2 friends go to the same Gymnast place and are in pretty HIGH levels and I don't want to go there cause I'm flexible but not SUPER flexible and I don't want to be made front of:*( And I can kinda do a cartwheel but I pulled something or did something to my leg longgggg ago and it kinda hurts when I try to do a cart wheel! What should I do? Aim for one of my dreams at a different place than my friends or not do it or something!?!?!? HELP!

MOD So once school starts I'm going to go to the gym every weekday with my bro and work out. I am really intimidated to go and work out in front of all the older people there and it ruins my work outs. What should I do because I really want to see results and become more healthy? Thank you!!

Hey chica! You can always work out outside of the gym, with your bro! Play a sport outside, go running, even go hiking. Or, you can go back to your kid days and jump rope outside. Working out doesn't always have to involve the gym. However, if you're totally set on going to the gym, you have to remember that most everyone there feels awkward and embarrassed too. They're not there to judge you, they're there to get healthy, and many are afraid of the exact same thing you are. Lots of gyms have smaller rooms too that you can go in and work out, or use the machines Smile

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD today is a very bad day for me. im on vacation, at my aunt and uncles house, but its just my uncle here right now. my grandma and sister are with me too. it was a 5 hour car ride here, and the entire way my grandma as yelling at me!! i tried to be nice about it, but shed get all mad at me when i wasnt hungry, or wasnt looking at signs to find a place for me to get food(her and my sister stopped at taco bell, but im a veg and didnt see anything i wanted) i sat in the back seat and read a book, to try to relax. shes been yelling at me all day no matter hat i do! my uncle insulted me when i was texting(he wasnt talking to me before that) and my grandma keeps yelling at me no matter hat i do! im having a reaction to my makeup, so it makes my face pale and my eyes red and atery, so she keeps telling me im tired, when i slep for 9 hours! everyones yelling at me, so im alone right now and im still almost in tears. theres more, but i cant fit it all. thanks.

Hey there girly! I'm so sorry that you're having such a bad day. Can you talk to your sis about it? Maybe she can talk to your grandma and tell her to ease up on you. If not, I would try talking to grandma and tell her that you really want to have a good time and not argue the whole time. Tell her that you're excited to be there and want to have a good time. Unfortunately, sometimes family time isn't always the easiest Frown

MOD MOD MOD In the August/September issue of the Girls Life magazine it said you could win a pair of of Sketchers(page 81). Where do I go to enter for the contest? It also said you could win a closet organizer(page 85),but I can't find where to enter for that either.

Hey chica! I would check the back of the magazine, where they have the where to buys and what not. There should be some info back there as to how to enter. Good luck in the contest! Smile

MOD- Got cut off there, but what do you think of the situation? Should I go? Should my mom go? She doesn't want me to go without her because she's afriad my dad will try to talk to me about it and she knows he has HORRIBLE control of his temper. He's attacked my mom before; though, it was years ago, and I've felt scared he may attack me before as well. I know the last thing you want to be doing is reading this whole story. I really appreciate all you mods do for us girls. Any advice you have for me and my family is so very much appreciated. Thanks for your time Smile

Hey there chickadee, first of all, don't apologize. This is what we're here for! And I really really hope that I can help some. I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this. And, I'm sorry that your mom does too. I think one of your posts might not have posted, because I didn't get the part about him wanting you guys to go somewhere. The last part I got was that he texted you and said that you only knew one side. What happened after that?

MOD- (Continuing..) When my parents were leaving the store this guy ran up to them and said, "STEPHANIE ____, YOU'VE BEEN SERVED!" And threw the papers at her and ran away. Then she chased after my dad who was already getting in the car and she was trying to talk to him about why he would do something like that. His door was open and he was sitting in the drivers seat, and he started to back up the car with her still standing between the door and the car! She kind of fell into the car a bit and he slammed on the brakes pushed her out of the car and into the car parked next to him, and then tried to push the door around her and took off. He could've maimed my mother. He's horrible! Then, after my mom told me the story I texted him, "I hate you." and he sent me a message telling me he loved me a lot and that he was guessing I sent him the text because I only knew my mom's half of the story. Later on I read the subpoena and he got my brother's and my birth years wrong. TBC (One more post)

MOD- (Continuing from last post, thanks for your help!). He's telling my mom that she has to find the money for an attorney herself. So for a while she was avoiding being served papers because she would then only have 20days to find the money and come up with an attorney, and he's been planning with an attorney since November. Well, my dad decided to go to Iraq for a month to do intel. work, and he just got back yesterday. He called my mom when he got back and said he needed access to our wireless account because he left his Iphone in Dubai. (And by the way, we've had our phones for 3 years and their cheapy phones and he just goes out and buys himself an Iphone with this SUPER expensive plan when I've been asking my parents to CONSIDER a $100 phone for me for the past year and a half). My mom told him she didn't feel comfy letting him have access, but she said she'd meet him at he store to help him get a "temporary" phone that he wanted. TBC

MOD- *Heads up, this is going to take a few posts* My dad has decided he wants to divorce my mom. About 10 years ago my mom quit her job to homeschool us and my dad has kept working to provide for the family. He's in the military so he's been required to go overseas for several years (we'd visit in the summer) and things such as that. However, now that he's finally back in the US, he doesn't feel "welcome" at home (even though we try SO hard to make him feel welcome). So he filed for divorce and he took ALL of the money from my parent's joint account. He has accounts at other banks and he's put it all away for himself and his bills and then he slowly dishes out the money to her for bills (including his own bills) and for our needs (like extra-curriculars and our homeschooling). One thing he WON'T give my mom money for is attorney bills. They JUST finished paying off a HUGE loan to my mom's parents that they borrowed on my dad's behalf years and years ago. [[To be continued]]

I have a zit/pimple on my upper lip, and it's been there all week. I've tried to pop it, but it hurts so bad. It doesn't have a head on it either. I start school next week, and want my face to be totally clear. Any tips on that? Plus how can I get this pimple to go away!? Please help me! Thank you for your help in advance! (:

Hey! Just wash your face every night with face scrub and use a pimple cream, over the counter's fine but if you can get a prescription it's even better. Good luck!

yoga sounds super fun! but where do you think i could find a inexpensive class?

Hmmm, I'm not totally sure. I would look into local health clubs or something like the YMCA to see if they have a class that you don't have to be a member for. I'm in college and we had a free yoga club/class, so maybe you could look at your school and see if they have any kinds of clubs/classes. You could also look into yoga DVDs to do at home, or look up some moves online.
