These are great tips. GL, you are so right, it has so much to do with the angle when you try to put them in. They dryness is also important. That is why a good lubricant can help. My friend is going through problems with trying to use tampons. wikihow.com also has a good explanation on how and what to do when it comes to aunt flo and tampons.

I'm a competitive swimmer and for the first time my period came when i have a meet... I've tried tampons (i've used an entire box trying to get one in!) and it NEVER works. I've tried everything, what should I do?

Hey girlie. Yea, try to push it to the ring if you can. There's no particular part of your back to aim for. Just try to adjust it and push it in so it's comfortable. The more you practice, the more you will realize which angle is best for you.

I'm 14 and just got accepted to the high school of my dreams. I have cheerleading clinics on Tuesday and I just got my period today. From what I know there is going to be a lot of tumbling so I was just wondering if a pad would work. If not, how can I tell my mom that I want tampons. Also, do tampons hurt when you take them out? Pads should be fine, but if you want to try tampons, they shouldn't hurt.  Just tell your mom you want to be safe to avoid any potential embarrassing moments while tumbling!

ok so i just got some tampons and i haven't tried to put one in yet....i am pretty scared. but my problem is that i was suppose to have my period a few days ago. i'm 12 so i'm not pregnant. its frustrating because its spring break and i don't want to go anywhere because what if i start my period?? ugh!!!! what do i do???




Hey girlie. There are instructions in the tampon box about how to put one in, so don't worry. Don't let being scared about that influence your decision to go somewhere for spring break. Go have fun! Just make sure you have pads/tampons with you at all times incase you do get your period.

They make tampons with or without applicators and I have only ever used them with the plastic applicator. You cant tense up when putting them in because it causes the muscles down there to tighten not allowing them to go in easy. For that reason you can use lube to help them slide in easier. Just practice using your fingers a few times because it does help and use a good lube.

i'm supposed to have swimming in gym class in 2 weeks, which happens to be at the same time that i'm supposed to get my period. i can't figure out how to use tampons, is there anything else i could do if i get my period while we have swimming in gym? im kinda freaking out about this. Frown

I've had my period since i was 11. (im 13 now) and i'm so ready to wear tampons because i hate the feeling of being all bloody and gross in class... especially the classes i have with my crush... Anyways, i got the U by Kotex ones, that are regular size which is the smallest. and i just tried to put one in (scaaaryyy) but it wouldnt go in all the way and it kinda hurt. did i do something wrong? idk. I'll try again tomorrow, but can you give me some advice on how to do it right, and make it easier on myself?

Hey girlie. Make sure you push the applicator inside you first. Then push the slider part up so that the tampon comes out. Then pull out the applicator.

Hey girly! You shouldn't leave a tampon in for over 8 hours. If you do, you're at a greater risk of getting toxic shock syndrome. So, I'd make sure to change it right before you go to school, and as soon as you get home.

okay so everytime i use a tampon and take it out my period stop so a while, like i would say 3 hours. I understand it's probably since the tampon sucked up all the blood, but does that mean that tampons can make my period go by faster? because it sucks up the blood faster?

The first time I tried, it wouldnt go in and hurt. You have to make sure you're putting it at the right angle, otherwise its not actually going in.

Hey girlie! Most girls start out wearing pads then transfer over to tampons. It is your choice though! Neither is a "better" option; it's just personal preference.

MOD MOD MOD! My period came today, unexpectedly while I was at school. I was totally unprepared, so I had to stuff toilet paper in my underwear. But this is like the heaviest period I've ever had! I've had my period for a year, and used tampons, but only regulars. I am scared of using super because they are so big but my period is heavy! I soaked through a pad in 2 hours! PLEASE HELP!!

 

Hey girlie. Try using a super--it will last longer and your period will not leak. Give it a try.

Your mom may be over reacting a bit, but in the end, she's still your mom and you have to respect her. If she doesn't think you're ready yet to use tampons, let it go for a little while and continue using pads. After a while you can bring up again and see what she says.

What do you mean, it hurts it? How does it hurt? Sting, burn, ache? Where does it hurt? Your period might cause severe cramps but the flow itself should never hurt. If you're hurting or are irritated "down there," tell your doctor all your symptoms so they can make sure you're healthy!

It's totally safe to use pantyliners for some extra protection! It might be a little uncomfy though... I always would've rather just gotten used to the feeling of discharge instead of using pads/pantyliners, but it's a personal decision ya gotta make for yourself!

Hey chica! I'm not sure what you mean by you can see your pad. If it's peeking out the sides of your leotard, then try wearing 2 leotards. Maybe the first one will help conceal it. Pads are much harder to conceal than tampons, but you might want to give tampons a second chance. Once you get the hang of them, they are great to use. You can't feel them when inserted properly, and they are completely concealed.

The best first tampon is Playtex Gentle Glide, the multi pack with Slender Lights and Slender Regulars, so you can switch sizes once your done with the lights. It got recommended to me from one of my friends so I tried them and I loveed it! The fact that they were slender helped them get in easier oh and the reason they might of hurt is because you were probably tense or anxious which caused your muscles to tense up or you started off with a too big tampon.

MOD MOD MOD! Okay, so I've had my period for 3 years now and always have used pads. My period is always very heave and usually goes through the pad onto my underwear and sometime throught my pants. I want to start using tampons because of this, plus I play on a travel softball team so I'm always playing which makes it even worse. My mom said I would when I turn 14 (which will be in March) but I heard you can get a serious infection or something from tampons. I know absolutely nothing about this but now I'm scared to use them. Can you explain this infection? And am I going to get it if I use them? Please answer as soon as possible! Thanks! Smile

 

The infection that people worry about getting from tampons is Toxic Shock Syndrome, or TSS.  You can get the deets about it here:  http://www.girlslife.com/post/2008/07/31/TSS-Tampons.aspx.  The good news is, you can help prevent it by changing your tampon every four hours and using the lowest absorbency possible for your bod.  I know it sounds scary, but tampons are truly safe (otherwise women wouldn't use them at all!).

Hey its ok! I have had my period for two years now! I just started using tampons about 7 months ago! I will never go back to using pads. I put a pad on even if im wearing a tampon cause it might leak. You need to find a comfortable position and then insert it. And if you wear a tampon you dont have to worry about if your going to leak.

Hey girl, you most likely don't have to open it that much to wear tampons. Just follow the instructions and you should be fine.

Hey girlie. i think non applicator tampons are cheaper, but they are harder to put in. I think you should be honest with your mom and explain to her why you want to wear tampons.
