Spring break period probs

What should I do if I get my period during break? I’m going to the beach!

How hot should the hot water be? and my mom's not answering her phone. Now what?

Hey girl, make it as hot as your tap water gets, but not boiling. And I'd leave your mom a message or send her a text. Check out this link for some helpful tips, then try to relax or take a nap!

I just got my first period, and it's really heavy!!
I also have horrible cramps behind my knees, and in my lower stomach. What do I do about the cramps? and how do I tell my mom, she's not home at the moment. I wanna try tampons, bcuz the pad I'm wearing right now, feels like a diaper. how do u put a tampon in?

Hey girl, don't worry! Try using a hot water bottle to ease the cramps. I'd call your mom and get her advice and let her know what you're going through--I'm sure she'll be happy to help. Here are a couple links to get you started:

5 reasons tampons are better
-dosent feel like a diper
-you can run
-you can swim!
-eaiser to hide
- more comferatable
i just used them for the first time and it was alot better than pads

I got my first period in january on the 8th. But, obviously, my period skipped over the 8th of this month. I'm leaving for Florida tomorrow, and - with my luck - there's a good chance I'll get it while on vacation. What should I do if my period comes? My mom bought me some tampons... but I'm really afraid to try them. And the diagram in the box doesn't help much.
What should I do???

It takes practice. So you just need to try it out and see if you can get it to work. I was scared at first too, but now i loooove them. So youll get the hang of it. Dont worry Smile xoxo kerra

Once i went on a camp. we had to go on a hike and then camp out for two nights in the woods. there were no toilets and me and my best mate was on our period we were only aloud to go be hide a tree. so she had to watch me change my pad (also she seen my hairs and my down there and i seen hers!) and i had to watch her change hers it was ok though. we both leaked at night aswell !Frown

**MOD! MOD! MOD! MOD! MOD!!!!!**
what do you do when you shower and ur on ur period?? do u have to wear a tampon????

Hey girl! No, there's no need to shower with a tampon in. You're cleaning in the shower anyway, so don't worry about your period. Just put in a tampon or put on a pad once you're out.

Hi, so do you actually have to wear a tampon in the water? Is there anything else you can wear? I'm afraid to start using them. Thank you!

Hey girl,

Your options are tampons and pads, and you sure can't wear pads in the water. They'll absorb all the water and expand like crazy! Just try to relax and practice the tampons during your next period. It might feel weird at first but you get used to them fast. They're all I use now! Smile

Hey girlie! It can be super awkward to talk to our moms about these kind of things, and that's totally normal. Here's a link that has some really helpful hints on how to get that convo started. Good luck!

MOD!!!MOD!! I just got my period and its close to summertime and pools opening and i don't want to wear a tampon what else can you wear other than a tampon

Don't worry, wear a panty liner in your swimsuit (more discreet than pads) and
just so you know when you're fully submerged in water your flow often slows or
stops. But wear something anyway just to be safe Smile Good luck!

MOD MOD MOD: I'm going on a field trip on the day I get my period. I have a SUPER heavy flow and I need to change my pad ever 3-4 hours but we are going to be gone for way longer then that on a wilderness trip with no bathrooms...what should I do? Overnight pads won't last me more than 8 hours and we are going to be gone for 13. Please help.

Hey girly girl! If you can, I'd bring some tampons along. But, you can only leave those on for 8 hours or less too. I'd make sure to load up on pads.... normally I wouldn't recommend this, but maybe double up on two overnight pads at once. And, wear layers of dark clothing, rather than something like light jeans.

my mom never used a tampon, she told me!

by temani on 4/12/2011 5:50:54 PM

OK, so can u get ur period when ur sleeping? Also can u get a yeast infection from the adhesive and recycled material on always pads? i read about it on google and want to no if it is true. If it is what should i do? Thank u so much for ur help. UR AWESOME!!Smile

Hey babe,

Yep, you can get your period at any time during the day! All sorts of things can trigger yeast infections, including certain panty materials and even some pads. But no worries, using pads doesn't mean you will definitely get yeast infections - just remember to change them at regular intervals and to keep yourself clean and dry "down there" whenever you can. That means regular showers and some "freshening up" when you think it's necessary. This way, you avoid any kind of yeast infection that might pop up Smile

MOD MOD MOD: Okay i started my period dec. 2010 and summers coming up and when i asked my mom about tampons shes just like they will hurt but she doesnt know but i already put one in at a friends house but i dont know how to tell her that i put one in without her knowing and i dont think that she will let me use them, and also im afraid if i put them in to much i will get tss HELP!!

Hey girlie. I've worn tampons since I started and nothing bad has ever happened to me. I think you will be fine. Just tell her that you want to start using them, especially because summer is coming up- and they're perf for bathing suits. Then, you could just say that you've already practiced putting one in and it didn't hurt you. If it hurts, it's because the tampon isn't pushed far enough in.
Marly Z.

by Kissible on 4/11/2011 5:42:54 PM

I am so afraid to use a tampon. People tell me that it hurts to put one in! I am going to the beach soon, and I am afraid my period will come, since it is so irregular these days. Does it really hurt?

Hey girlie. It only hurts when you don't push it in far enough. That usually is what happens the first couple times until you get used to using them. After the top of the applicator is inserted, push the up the bottom of the applicator to insert the tampon. If it feels uncomfortable, use your hands to actually push the tampon in further. Good luck!

If you have a lot of hair just trim it, I wouldnt shave down there unless you want to but a lot of people wait until they are 12 or 13 to start shaving. Best thing is just to talk to your mom because she probably has good advice about what you should do.

the first time i got my period was almost a year ago bu tmy mom says i can use a tampon till im at least 16. and i dont think i want to wear a pad in the pool. but i dont want to miss swimming. does anyone have any advice that could possibly work?

Hey girlie,

If you want to swim when you're on your period, you need to use a tampon.  Talk to your mom about maybe allowing you to use it when you swim!

I got my period today, it was expected a few days ago and it came today. I'm going swimming with my family tomorrow at the WI Dells! I've never used a tampon and it's embarrassing to ask my sis for one. What should I do? This weekend was supposed to be my spring break fun HELP!

Hey girlie! Don't be afraid to ask your sis. She's been through the exact same thing, so she knows how it feels. She'll be more than happy to help you out, and you'll get to enjoy the time with your family.

Mod mod mod. I have some questions is having yellow discharge normal? And dose the amount of hair down there effect when I will get me period.and what dose discharge mean? Plz answer I really want to know. Thanks Smile

Hey girlie,

I think I may have already answered your question on your other posts, but occasional yellow discharge is normal, and the hair shouldn't affect your period!  Check out our periods section:

I just got my period for the first time two months ago. I skipped it last month, but today I saw this really dark discharge in my underwear.
It sounds weird, but could it be my period? It was brown, and my discharge is usually yellowish.
I'm really freaked out!

hey! It is probably your period

i go to my camp all the time.the prob? the only adult girl there is my aunt and if i get my period while i am there idk how she'd react. also she'd have 2 buy me pads but i dont want my bros to know and make fun of me. i know i am probably overreacting to the whole thing but i need to know: should i tell my cousin emma 2 tell her mom or should i bring pads 2 begin with so nobody has 2 know? i relly freaking out plz help!!

Hey girl. It never hurts to be prepared for your period. You can keep some pads with you. But also, don't feel weird that you'd have to tell your aunt if it happens at camp. She's been there before and will be able to help you with it.

I started my period last month and its about that time again and i have been feeling tired, my stomach hurts a little and idk i just feel like i have been run over by a monster truck (havent really) i was just wondering if that means my period should be coming soon this month? Thanks for helping me!

hey girl! that could mean your period is coming soon. cramps are a good indicator, but i'm not sure exactly what the pains are like that you have been having. you may want to say something to your mom just in case!

My best friend is on her 3rd period. She didn't even tell me! I should have known since she was having PMS. I feel really bad but I saw it coming.. she is way more developed than me. How do I deal with her PMS? How can I help her out? Thanks!

Hey girlie. When girls are going through PMS, they're normally pretty irritable. If she starts acting a little out of her norm, just let it go and wait for her to come around.

MODM  my legs are all dry and gross and annoyingly pale! how can i get them looking awesome for shorts season!

Hey girlie! I've found that Jergens lotion is the best for adding a little color to your legs. There are special lotions that have a tint to them for the color. As far as being dry, try moisturizing every time you get out of the shower. That seems to help.

wow. the day after I started getting my period (my first period) I used a tampon it's not that hard!

by *Sigh* on 3/9/2011 2:57:08 PM

Hi Girlslife!
My friend is always saying your period stops in the water, and she's so sure about it! I've never actually researched but I'm pretty sure it's not true!Is it? You're period doesn't stop just because you're soaked in water...does it? Lol asking a lot Laughing but I'm just confused...and another question...
I get really heavy discharge right before my period but that's the only time when it's really heavy. Well, I just got off my period and I have really heavy discharge right now and I have cramps but it just ended last week. What is that? Is it normal?
thx Smile <3

Hey girl! Truth is, your period can stop when you're in cold a pool or the ocean. Also, I'm not sure about having so much discharge right before or after your period. It should be when you're ovulating which is halfway through your cycle. You should probably ask your mom or doctor about it just to be safe. Hope this helps!

by maeve01 on 3/9/2011 1:30:37 PM

you actually can wear a pad while swimming! I did it once. All you have to do is wear boy-short bottoms and underwear underneath and put a pad with wings in the underwear...its uncomfortable but it works

by spazzychick101! on 3/9/2011 12:29:01 PM

That sucks

by i_luv_devin on 3/9/2011 2:23:58 AM

You have no choice, you need to wear a tampon if you are going to go swimming. If you have never used one I would start, its not that hard you just have to get used to using them. There are so many good articles on gl that goes over how to use them. Remember,

Use Lube if needed
Get at the right angle and position
And never leave them in to long

Its that easy, just make sure you get the right size and kind, we are all different.
