Brown discharge. Period prob?

At the end of my period, I started getting brownish discharge on and off. What’s going on?
61 Comments | Add Yours

I have all of the signs of my periods arrival but its still not here yet! (Not in a rush just wanting to be prepared)For about a year I've had white discharge then last month for a day I had light brown discharge. I told my mom and she said I should be expecting my period. I had the same thing yesterday!! When I went to the doctor a while ago (sorry can't remember when)she said that I had a year until I could expect Aunt Flow. But then I wasn't really that developed breast wise. Now my breast stand out so I know their there. I think I'm in stage 3 because I'm tender especially when I'm laying on my belly. My mom started when she was 11 but I'm 12 and I have pubic hair that's really curly since I had for as long as I could remember and my armpit hair is just starting to grow. Should I be expecting Aunt Flow?

Yeah, I would expect your period, but don't get too nervous about it. It'll come when it comes. xx

Question: Is it normal to skip periods?

by CodySimpsGurl45102 on 11/3/2011 6:37:24 PM

This month, I had brown discharge (and also a teensy bit of blood on toilet paper when I wiped) for one week before my actual period. Is this normal, too?

Hey babe!

If the discharge has a foul or fishy smell, then you should definitely tell a doctor - that could be a sign of an infection.

ok i know this is gonna sound gross, but whenever for the last 3 days if i poop i wipe and i find red on the toilet paper. i havnt had my period yet, and im 12 years old. but what does this mean? im afraid to tell my grama (i live with my grama and grampa, but i see my mom ever weekend.) please answer cuz i dont know what it is. thanks

Hey Girl,

It sounds like you're having a tricky health issue, so the best thing you can do is tell your grandma. You shouldn't have any reason to be afraid when it comes to your health! She'll be able to make you a doctor's appointment and they can tell you what's up. If you're still too nervous, try telling your mom on the weekend. She may be able to help you out, too. Good luck!

Yesterday,I've got my first period.Actually, I was so happy. But, the worst thing is,we have to change the pads at all times.I've got my first period when I was going to take a bath before going to the school. Then, I felt something weird down there. It was bloody things.I told my mom, she said,"It is your first period." I was so shock! You know what, I am twelve years old. And, my weight is 33.5 kg and my height is 145 cm.Yeah, period is not based on our body size, but it is by our hormon. Smile

MOD MOD MOD MOD!!! Okay so I got this pinkish brownish discharge yesterday and just brownish today.. My doctor told me that I was going to get my period in about a year. I thought you are really close to your period when you get brown discharge! (its not poo i checked, lol) I am just really confused right now! Is my doctor wrong or right? How long do you think I will get it like a few days, months, or weeks? PLEASE HELP ME!!! Thank you!!!

Hey girl,

This totally sounds like your period! Your doc tried to give you a time estimate, which is super helpful, but the truth is that no one can predict exactly when you'll get your first period. Even a professional! So try to put what your doctor said behind you and get prepared for your first period. It might not get any heavier this month, but I would expect it next month for sure. (And obviously, because we can't accurately predict it, I could be wrong...but it's always better to be prepared!)

I have had my period for a about a year, and it's been completely regular. I really wanna try tampons, but I don't know how to tell my mom(She has never tried a tampon so she doesn't really even think about them as an option)I've always told her pretty much everything about this type of stuff I just don't know how to talk to her about this. How do I tell her?
Thanks xoxoxo

Hey chica! I'd be honest and let your mom know that you want to try them. Give her your reasons and ask if you can pick up a box the time you're shopping. She should understand. And if she doesn't, then you can always borrow one from the school nurse, or a friend, to try!

MOD MOD MOD, ..[question #1 omitted]..
Plus One Of My Close Friends is Datin My Bf Brothers. And Last Night she Told Me.. Her and Jay Had Sex ( Jays is my bfs Brother) I was shocked So When I told My Bf He Thinks It's not true. I would Ask Jay but She Told me Not To Tell him I know. so I REALLYYYY Need Help Here.!!!!!!
Thanks Mod. <3

Hey girlie,

Read this article for info about the hymen, which is the technical term for the slang word you used in your first question! And I don't think this is something you should confirm with Jay - it's their business and she trusted you enough to confide in you, so you shouldn't go around discussing it. If you want more info, ask her about it. Sex in a sensitive thing to discuss so understand that she might be tight-lipped about a lot of the details, but try not to doubt her or judge her. Be there to support her and listen if she needs it!

I know this is going to sound really weird and probably stupid, but i've been have issuses with my period and i want to do something about it, but i'm afraid to go to the gynecologist. what do i do?

Well, sweetie, I can't tell you what to do without knowing much about your problem.  It sounds like something to check out with a doctor.  Or if that worries you, sit down with your mom and tell her what's going on.  I'm sure she can help!

Hey. Well im 13 and i've never had a period before but i do have strong discharge. Its kinda yellowish and it smells fishy. I think there's something wrong but i can't just go to my mom and be like, "hey theres an issue!" We aren't close and I'd be WAY too embarrassed to try and tell her. What should I do?

I think your mom would be the best person to tell. It may be awkward but it will bring you two closer I bet. Also you can tell your doctor about it and I'm sure theyll be able to help. xoxo kerra

MOD MOD MOD ! i Just got my period and the bad thing is i was at camp! Frown when i started it got really heavy and i would never stop bleeding , i started on Tuesday then it ended on Saturday, Is 5 days normal or should i be getting it for 7 days? and my second question is i hate using pads cause they make me feel icky and yucky even when i change them i just dont like the feeling so i wanna wear tampons but i dont know how to put one on and im scared to get toxic shock thing?? So what do i do?

Hey girl,

Toxic Shock Syndrome is super rare and is really only connected to old "big" tampons - just make sure you change your tampons regularly, use the most appropriate size for your flow, and don't leave them in for longer than 8 hours. As for putting one in, try reading our tips here:

And yes, don't worry - anywhere from 3-8 days for a period is totally normal Smile

Hey girl, don't sweat it! Many period are irregular, and can come at any time, so if you aren't right "on schedule" thats completely normal.

MODMODMOD Ok so i got my period today right but its kinda brownish what is it. is it like bad but please help and also like theres no blood just brown i know this sound gross also it not that much like its not as much as other times i got it
btw i some times like have my period but then next month i dont get it what up with that!!!! please help

Hey babes,

It's not bad! The brown is blood, but it's just a different level of flow (it's lighter and it has probably dried a bit - I know, totally gross). Usually my period starts off brown, then gets red, then goes back to brown again before it goes away. It's like discharge combined with a period...and it's completely normal!! And remember that periods are almost always irregular when we first get them. Even after a year or two, they can be kinda unpredictable! Just hang in there and stay prepared with a pad in your bag when you think you're due for it Smile

this happens to me sometimes... i got my period for the first time in july 2010, it was pretty normal until this past july. i had my period for about a week in july 2011, which is normally how long mine is. then, two weeks later, this august i got it again, and now, a week after my period finished, it seems as if its on its way again with some light brown discharge. im so confused, is this normal? or is it just endometrial tissues, mentioned in this article?

Hey sweetie,

Especially when you're young, periods can be pretty irregular. You might have two one month and none the next! While most of the time this is pretty normal, if you're worried, or this continues, see a doctor. They can tell you for sure whether it's something to worry about, or no biggie.

by jonasloverxo on 8/19/2011 4:32:04 PM

Are tampons flushable? The box says yes but I keep getting mixed answers.

Hey girl, generally not. They should be disposed of with pads in a special trash can.

i have like...a LOT of discharge all the time. I get my period every 20 days or so, but is that normal...? like, it looks normal and evrything, but theres just a lot of discharge...

Hey girl!

I would say it's pretty typical to have a lot of discharge for the first few months that you have your period. But if you've had it for awhile, I'd make an appointment with your doctor to see what's up.

MOD MOD MOD MOD!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going on holiday in 3 days, and it's right about the time of my period, but I haven't started yet, I'm soo scared of starting on holiday, or having it on holiday! Because I usually wake up with it there, and I'de be soo embarrassed if it got on the sheets! Also, I'm going with my parents and my nephew, and my nephews like, 14! And we go swimming a lot on holiday! I can insert tampons but I'de be soo paranoid about it, say if the string came out and you could see it or something! Is there anything I can do to make it come quicker so I have most of it when I'm not there, and make sure I know I have it so I don't get it everywhere?!?! Thanks for your time, have a nice daySmile xoxo

Hey Sweetie,

Bad News: You can't control when your period comes. That said, it shouldn't stop you from having a good time on your holiday. Let your Mom know, and she can cover for you or carry around extra tampons in her purse. As for knowing when it arrives, unless you can feel it, there won't be anyway to know but to check. If you know it'll arrive a certain day, wear a panty liner or a light pad so you won't be caught totally off guard.

MOD MOD MOD I don't have my period. I have had PMS for about a year. Last night I was feeling very nauseated and my stomach was very uncomfortable, I didn't have an appetite, and I was super tired at 7 even though I usually get tired at 11. When I woke up today I found this clear sticky discharge with some brown clumps in it. Is that a period? There was like, 3 clumps about the size of an eraser at the end of a pencil. Thankss!

Hey girl. PMS is something that happens for little while before your period, so having for a year isn't totally possible. You may have had similar symptoms though. It sounds like your period could be starting up. Wait a day or so and if it doesn't develop into a regular flow go see a doc. Smile

Is there any way of getting pregnant if you are just sitting in a hot tub with guys? I do it a lot and one of my friends claim that you can. Is there any truth to what she is saying?

You cannot get pregnant unless ejaculate comes into close contact with your vagina, so if you're just sitting, no

Ok so I have an older sister, but there is a 17 year age difference between us. We are close and she knows I have my period, but I always feel awkward about it with her. I didn't tell her myself when I first got it, and I think the only way she knows is because my mom said something to her. I had to stay with her (she is married with 2 kids) for a long weekend because my parents were out of town. I thought I was going to have my period then, and I was really nervous about it. It ended up coming early that month, so I didn't have it, but it kinda bothered me that I was that nervous. I know she has hers, but I just felt scared to tell her and I don't know why. Please help me be more open about this with her so I can explain why I'm moody and if I don't feel good! Thanks

Take a deep breath and relax--not only is she your sister, but she's a female as well so she'll totally understand

Mod! I have a weird period! i get it almost every other month (sometimes less). I got my first period in January and I have had a lot of discharge. No matter when it is, before or after my period. The color is clear a couple times more yellow. Is this all normal?

Hey girl,

Yup, that's normal. Your period is usually a little "off" for the first 6 months-1 year after you first get it, so be patient until it gets on track. x0x0

MODMODMOD!: Last summer I got my period, and it never came back! What could have caused this? Thanks!

Hey girl,

Usually periods are a little abnormal for the first 6 months-1 year since you get it. However, you should go see your doctor just to make sure that your diet's ok and that your body is ready for your period to come back again. x0x0

My period is 2 months late, and I gained 3 pounds and Ive been feeling bloated and having heart burn and back pains. I''m haven't been sexually active, but I went swimming with 4 guys (my cousins) in my pool the week before my period. What's going on? Please help! My comments haven't been showing up. Thanks!

Hey girlie, I really doubt that being in the pool would have any effect on this. You're probably not  pregnant! See a doctor to find out what the deal is. Any changes in your eating and exercise habits, or just puberty, could be responsible for the weight gain.

MODMOD so i got my period and my mom said i cant use tampons for a while but what happens if i am invited to go somewhere with a pool? and i was wonering if i was going to grow more than 2 more inches because im only 4-10 1/2 and i want to be at least 5'2" before i stop growing. is there a possibilitly to grow more? and i think pads are ok-ish like i suppose theyre fine but i think i would like tampons better and i hate taking showers when i am on it because i feel discusting and wet can i fix that? sorry its so long-thanks Smile

Tampons are the only way to go in the pool, so you should talk to your mom about compromising. As far as growing, it all depends on your genetics how tall you'll be. Only your doctor can give you an estimate on growth.

So... I have gotten my period already (have had it for 2 years) and i have always (even when i first got my period) had a 'normal' period... but its only been 12days since my last period.... do you think that everything is ohkay, or do you think something could be wrong and i need to talk to a doctor about it?? (and its not really heavy like my periods normally are) THANK Smile

Hey girl, sometimes you can have spotting or lighter periods. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it continues to do that for the next couple months. Then talk to your doc. For now, give your mom a heads up and just take care of yourself.

You'll definitely know when your period actually comes, because it will be blood, not discharge. This could just be a sign that it's coming soon. x0x0

MOD MOD MOD I haven't gotten my period yet but I have had discharge for 2 years and my breasts have already started developing. Lately I have had an overload of discharge along with cramps. The cramps are sorta like a stabbing pain leaning towards more of my left side. Now, I can feel my discharge even dripping, I also NEVER get headaches and now I keep getting them. Are these signs my period is coming soon and how soon? P.S. I also have had spotting. Thanks!

What're some tips for getting rid of cramps other than pain killers? Those don't work for me. I know exercise, but what else?
And for some reason, I don't get irritated, I get happy during it, lol!

Like you already mentioned, exercise is a great way to get rid of cramps, and so is laying down with a heating pad over your belly. x0x0

I get really emotional when I'm on my period, & all my guy friends think I'm crazy, & sometimes I can be pretty mean to them too. One of them knows I have my period, but the rest are all pretty immature. What can I do to make me less emotional or make them think I'm not crazy???
Thanks so much

Hey girl,

If you catch yourself being too emotional or mean, try to go to the bathroom or into another room just to calm yourself down. You could also skip hanging out with them for those few days, so it doesn't cause any problems. x0x0

They say we MIGHT swim.
I don't feel comfortable telling the girls I'm on my period cuz some of them I'm not friends with very well.
I also don't want to wear a tampon.
What is an excuse or another way to get out of JUST the swimming part?

Mod mod mod!!!
There's this guy who likes me, but I'm not into him. He asked me out & I told him I was busy, but I know I can't keep putting him off. He is also one of my guy friends so if I did go out with him (to be nice) he would brag about it (he's kinda perv.) What do I do???????

Hey girl,

The best thing to do is just to let him down easy. Tell him that you really like being his friend, and you don't really have those feelings for him. You can also say how you love your friendship, and don't wanna do anything to ruin that. Good luck! x0x0

I was just wondering, when do your periods become regular or how to know if its irregular . Thanks Smile

Hey girl,

Your periods usually start to become regular about 6 months to 1 year after you first get your period. If it's irregular, it might come in January but not come again until March or April, or you might get it once every couple months.

MOD!!MOD!!MOD!! so yesterday i went to a water park with a friend and when we got there she was really exited to go on a slide she kept saying come on! come on! then i said hold on i have to put on sunscreen and then i said here can you put this on my back please and she did it really fast so when i got home and took a shower and saw my back i was sunburn only for one big spot where she did put sunscreen on. How do i get rid of the big spot on my back?? HELP!!!

Hey girl,

To get rid of the pain you might be feeling, you can put some aloe on your back. Unfortunately, you're just going to have to be patient and wait for the sunburn to fade. Next time, use a spray so that it evenly covers your whole bod. x0x0
