I have this friend lets call her "Melanie" So Melanie and I have been friends since birth and I really care about her! But sometimes she tends to be a snob. Like for example shes friends with this mean girl who hates me. And she totally treats me like garbage when shes around! And another thing is whenever we talk she makes me sound stupid! Like for example "We were talking about the Dollar Store and all its great deals!" And I told her this "Hey Melanie you can get a whole pack of lip gloss for a dollar!"
She says "Yea I know" Thats why its called the DOLLAR STORE!
Then I get hurt!
I really care about her but Im sick of the way shes treating me! What do I do? Sorry this is so long.

I'm sorry your friend is bullying you.  I think you should stand up for yourself and let her know she's being mean.  If she keeps at it, it might be time to take a break form your friendship.  It might just be a phase that she'll grow out of and you can be friends again when this is all over. xoxo

Hey girly girl! As scary as it is, this is kind of exciting in a way! Think about it, you can totally reinvent yourself to be whoever you want to be. Do you want to try a new fashion style?Get more into sports? Theatre? Anything else? You can do it! My best advice would be to get involved in a lot of different things that you enjoy doing. That way, you'll meet people like you, and you'll have a bigger friend base! Smile

MOD MOD MOD ... I am starting at a new school, and am going to the open house. One girl I have met before has invited me to go with her and hang out with her after the open house. I want to be able to make friends with people at my new school, but she seems to like to hang out with the cooler people but is not really one of them. I guess, she's like what people call a wanna-be, and I had someone like that at my old school, and we were enemies a lot of the time. I'm just not sure I want to be friends with someone like that, but I'm not really sure what I should do. I don't want to Already be like bffs because she was the first one I could really hang out with before I meet everyone else, but I don't want to go there without something I know I can really be sure of and not go there being clueless and made a fool out of because I am more of an antisocial loner. I am shy and get nervous and anxious around people that aren't my family.What do I do?

 

Hey girl! Just because you didn't like girls "like her" at your old school doesn't mean things won't be totally different at your new school.  You don't want to judge someone before you even meet them.  Hang out with her.  You don't have to be BFFs, but having a friendly face will help during the first couple days at school.  If you two don't hit it off, you don't have to be friends with her forever, but she might be able to introduce you to other girls and help you make friends.  Good luck at your new school! xoxo

So I really like this guy, and I think he likes me too. The only prob is that his parents don't seem to even like me! I think the only reason they don't like me is because I'm not Russian like they are (Well I don't think so anyway I was adopted)! Plus, to make things worse, his older cousin thinks I'm a beer drinker because once this kid I know put a beer bottle cap in my backpack and now he says I drink beer BUT I DON'T! MY PARENTS DON'T EVEN DRINK! My family doesn't even drink caffeine! So now I look worse than ever before them. What do I do?!?!

Winning over your boy's parents' approval can often be a struggle. But I don't think you have to worry yet. You mention that they are russian-- russian social culture is a lot different than US culture and russians can often come off as colder. So it may have nothing to do with you (or with your not being Russian).  As for the beer issue, can you talk to your crush about it? Maybe he could bring it up with his parents if they are concerned. The best way to get his parents to like you is to just like be polite around them and try to make conversation (yes-- i know it can feel impossible). Bonus points: have your crush talk you up to them, mentioning your great grades or volunteer work.

So this guy! Oh this guy! Well me and him have kind of a weird story...I met him because of my best friend...because she liked him. Well I convinced the guy to ask her out! (yay!) and the next day, his best friend asked me out! (double-yay!) well one night my bffs bf confessed his feelings for me and I told him I liked him too. I felt bad that I was doing that but I pushed the guilt aside. I wasn't doing anything wrong, right? Well my bff broke up with him because she just felt like she wasn't ready for a boyfriend. The next day, I broke up with my bf. Me and my bffs ex bf talked a lot but all of the sudden he just stopped! We haven't talked in like two weeks! What should I do? I really miss him! Also my ex still REALLY likes me! He always texts me and invites me to hang out with him all the time but I just don't think it's a good a idea! Is it? What should I do? Thanks!







Hey girl! If you don't like your ex, just let him down easy or let him know that you only want to hangout as friends. As for your BFF's ex, he may be feeling guilty about liking you while he had a girlfriend or maybe he is really busy.  You could try texting him, but make sure it is okay with your BFF first. xxoo

hey! yeah totally. I would say just smile, make eye contact, and be friendly to them. Asking them questions about themselves and participating in family discussion will put them at ease as your hosts and help them get to know you. Clearing your own plate won't hurt either ;)

Please help! I just came back from a camp and I made a lot of close friends there! Everyone from the camp has been talking a lot and texting. I'm pretty sure that we will stop once school starts though. I'm going into high school next year and I'm super worried about the classes and if I will be able to handle them. The sports that I picked out put a lot of pressure on me. And I feel like my friends here won't even come close to the friends I made at camp. I really feel down in the dumps about this and I feel like crying all the time because I don't want to handle school. What's wrong with me?

 

Hey chica, cheer up! Nothing is wrong with you! I made a lot of new friends right before school started and felt the exact same way you do.  The good news is that you WILL find friends at school that measure up to your camp friends.  You just have to have an open mind about it.  A great way to make friends? Hang with girls on your team (ask people if they want to do some extra practicing on the weekends and then hit a movie- you'll bond with your tea AND get better at your sport).  You can make study groups and hang out with people in your classes, too.  I promise you that you will get through high school, even if right now it looks daunting.  Good luck! xoxo

Hey! So for BTS shopping, I wanted to go to Aéropostale, Forever21, and American Eagle, maybe Hollister and/or Abercrombie? I am not sure if I should go to AE, Hollister, and Abercrombie because it is SO PRICEY there and I need money for shoes too and a backpack! Should I go to AE, Holister, and Abercrombie? I only have $250 and I need $ for shoes and a backpack!

Try online shopping before you hit the mall.  Budget money for your backpack and shoes and then look at the websites for the stores you want to go to.  Pick out items you might want that are in the budget (warning: everything that's online might not be in the store, but you'll have an idea of how much you want to spend in each store).  That way, before you go, you'll know how much money you have and whether you can hit the pricier stores.  xoxo

Hey girl!

There are plenty of other places you can buy cheaper bras so that you have money for your BTS clothes too. Target has a good bra selection. Starting 6th grade probably seems really scary, but it doesn't have to be! You'll have more hw than you did in elementary school, so being prepared for that is key. You'll learn how to manage your time a little better. You should try and talk to lots of different people because you never know who might end up being one of your new BFF's!

hey! don't let your friend get you down, just work that much harder to prove her wrong. In your speech just be genuine. Don't make unrealistic promises but do set real goals for things you could do for the class, then plan out ways to meet those goals. good luck!

Although school means at first, making the right impression, well I got a situation here... Ya see the day before school I am getting braces and I definately need the two right colors... This is because I have school pictures coming up and I don't know which colors to do without looking like a total dweeb!!! Because yellow or orange might make my teeth look gross and if I do my scoop colors, red and white, the white might look weird... And if I did blue in green that might be too dark... And also I don't want my shirt to go off with my braces!!! What do u suggest as my two colors? Sorry this is sooo long but please help and fast!!!




Hey girl, I'd try something neutral: is clear or white an option? Talk to your dentist about what he thinks is the most natural and would work best for pictures and give with that!

Hi. I am a super positive person, but sometimes i still need help keeping my smiley , happy mood shining.I am a competitive soccer player. On my old team, i always used to be a starter. Most games, I wasn't substituted at all. Now, with my new coach, we just played a practice game. And i was a substitute. I'm SUPER upset inside, but i dont want to loose my cool, or start crying.

hey ok so our grade is going a trip to chicago soon and my bff and i were gonna room together. then she texted me and said im rooming with someone else sorry and i cried my eyes out cuz she promised me. then a couple days ago she texted me and said im thinking of backing out of rooming with these people and i got so excited that she was gonna come back to me but then she decided she didnt want to deal with the drama of the other people being ticked becuz i guess she promised them too. i really want to room with her and i know i shouldnt convince her to do something she doesnt want to but im just so upset she ditched me. what should i do?

Well, my dad has been struggling with smoking for a while. Four years ago I caught him and he promised to stop. Years later, he's relapsed. I found out because well, he smells like smoke. He just doesn't know that I found out. I want my dad to stop killing himself slowly, but my sister said I can't judge him. I know that, but it just bothers me so much. How can I help this, he's said he'd stop SO many times but never has!


 


Hey chica! Unfortunately, this is something that your dad had to do on his own. No matter how many times you say it, he needs to be ready to stop himself. I'd talk to him, though, and let him know how concerned you are. Maybe, as him to visit his doctor. Doctors can prescribe him something to help curb the desire for nicotine.

MOD MOD MOD! In this article, it keeps saying "her and she". Is that referring to the teacher or to the other students? I'm just a little confuzzled!

 

I think it's referring to other students you wanna be friends with! Smile

ok theres this new girl coming to our class but she super weird and nerdy and just nothing like me... i was being nice so i took her to the pool to meet a couple of classmates.... i dont want to be her bff but i stil want to b a friend.. how do i make that work?? HELP!

MOD MOD MOD I've hung out with these friends for about a year and a half now. I love them to death, but the longer I know them, the more tired with them I get. Like, they're all really immature and weird, and I get that rep by association. My so called "best" friend never invites me over and rarely calls. She has slapped me and screamed at me in the school hall! I was talking to my grandma about it and I realized that I don't want to hang out with them anymore. My school is really small, so there aren't many other options. I'm hoping that's there's a new girl I can be friends with. If there's not, what should I do? And if there is, what can I do so they won't be as mad at me? I know my friends will be really angry if I "ditch" them. Thanks so much and sorry it's long! Smile

 

Hey chica, being "weird" or nerdy is one thing, but being hurtful to you is totally another!  I think you need to let your "best friend" let you know it's not okay to treat anyone like that, especially her BFF!  See if there are actvities you can get involved in to meet new people - there may be something outside your school but in your community that would be helpful.  if not, try to be friendly and keep your options open.  There may be someone in your classes that's not new but you just never considered before -  like the quiet girl or guy in math class.  Hope that helps a bit, and good luck!  xoxo

MOD MOD MOD Back in sixth grade, me and my old group of friends separated and I made friends with this one girl Bianca. She seemed really nice and funny, but after a few months she started getting really mean. She called me names, got mad really easily, gossiped, and didn't keep my secrets. I had a few fights with her where I didn't talk to her for a week or so. I didn't have any other friends really, so I always went back to her. This has been going on until the end of seventh grade, where I told her off. Now the problem is that I don't want to crawl back to her, but I don't think my old friends will take me back. I've tried fitting in with other groups, but I don't. I really want to be friends with my old friends, but I don't think they want to be friends with me. What do I do?? (Sorry it's so long) Thanks so so so much (:

 

Hey chica, I'm so sorry to hear about the friend troubles, but I am glad to hear you're trying to make a change for the better.  Your best bet is to just be friendly to everyone - old friends, new people in your class, and Bianca included (although you don't have to go out of your way for her - just be polite).  I would think about if there is one person from your old group you could talk to - tell them one-on-one that you've missed hanging out with the group, and you're sorry you drifted apart.  Then, just do your best to branch out, too.  If there's someone new in your class or a friendly-seeming group in the lunch room, smile and strike up a convo.  If there's any new after-school activities you can join, that would be great too.  Believe me, I know what it's like to feel lonely or without a group, but if you do your best to be friendly and put yourself out there, you will find the right friends - you just gotta give it time. Smile

MOD. I have a bad reputation at my school for being sensitive and crying all the time. I rarely ever cry around my family or my boyfriend, but when it comes to school, I guess the stress gets to me! I do well in school and have no problems learning, it's just a stressful environment for me. How can I change my peers' perceptions and make friends? My boyfriend has promised to introduce me to his school pals, and I'm not too quiet or nervous meeting his friends out of school. I'm just scared this will change once I hit the halls. Do you have any advice? Thanks so much. I really appreciate the answer!

 

Hey chica, I'm sorry stress is getting to ya!  I think the best way to deal with it is not to worry about your rep, but try to figure out what stresses you so much about school.  Is it classes, teachers, something else?  Once you figure out what the problem is, you can come up with a solution (that may mean asking for a little help from a parent or someone you trust!).  If you can deal with what's stressing you, the tears will disappear... and so will that rep!

School is a different environment, but just try to be your usual friendly self.  If the convo lags, you can ask them about what classes they're taking or what they're involved in.  Good luck!  xoxo

A Great article, btw. I always had trouble making new friends especially since my currents friends can be so judgmental at times. How do I meet new friends this school year, without my old ones getting in the way?? (But still not hurting their feelings).




Talk to new people and when you make new friends and if your friends have anything to say, talk to them about how their statements make you feel
