MODMODMODMODI'm eleven and I've have had my period for about a year and my last one only lasted a day and I have had nothing for about three months all my mom said to do is to track it what else should I do????? HELP

Hey! the only way to really feel reassured is to talk to your doctor about all of these questions Smile To be honest, that's what we mods just have to tell you guys when you come to us with any health concerns. You may very well be fine, but since we're not doctors and we can't even see you face to face, it's not for us to tell you what's fine and what isn't. You know your body. Trust your instincts and talk to your doc!

Hey girl,

If you're bleeding, it's probably your period, but you should describe your symptoms to your mom or a doc so that they can find out what's up. Your symptoms sound totally normal though, so don't worry!

I got my period in July and I'm the only one in my class that is having her period
So in school our backpacks are in a corner of the room and my little bag with pads and stuff are over there. Any ideas about getting that bag without anyone noticing? Also in the bathroom how do you stick on a pad/tampon quickly? It's my third period.

Hey girl,

Even if you go over there to get your bag, I'm sure no one will notice the difference! They might think you are just getting a pencil or school supply. You could also take your whole backpack to the bathroom, though that would be a bit of a hassle! Once you've had your period for a while, you will be able to change pads faster, but don't worry about that now! You'll be fine Smile

I just got my first period a while back. I told my mom and she told me everything and taught me to use a tampon. I also already really knew everything cuz Im already almost 15 and the last of my friends to get it. Im fine with it now, and so do I really need to tell my mom when I get it EVERY month? I just got my 2nd one and it's really awkward telling my mom and I feel like im fine on my own. But before she kept asking if I got my 2nd one like she wants to know. Do I really have to tell her again?

Hey girl! Let her know you got it (you don't have make a big deal, just mention it in passing). She might just want to check in and make sure everything is happenin' all as it should be.  You don't have to tell her EVERY time, but if she asks, it doesn't have to be awkward to chat about- periods should be an embarrassing thing to talk about with other women. xoxo

Modmodmod di just got my period and even though i know how to use tampons im not really comfortable with using them. Unfortunately my dad want to take me and my brother swimming tomorrow. Though the last thing i want to do is swim. i don't want to crush my dads feelings by not going but i REALLY dont want to swim and if i go to the pool i know theyll find a way to make me get in the water. Please help i have know idea what to do! Thanks!

Hey girly! It's hard to get used to tampons at first. But, the more you use them, the more comfortable they'll be. You could always wear one just for swimming, and take a pad to switch over to after you're done swimming Smile

How do you put in those weird cardboard tampons? I'm going to camp for the entire week that I'll have my period and I'll be swimming a lot. Help me!!!

Hey girlie! Cardboard tampons are the same as plastic tampons, the holder is just made of different material.  Open one up and see- you can insert it the same way as plastic applicators.  xoxo

I've had my first period and it's been about 30 days so, if it's regular, I should be getting my second period really soon. I'm going on a road trip where the gast stations are REALLY far apart. How much will a pantyliner hold if I can't get to a bathroom? What should I do?

Hey girl! Try a pad, which will be the most absorbant.  Also, wear dark clothes and sit on something in your car (a towel or washable blanket), just in case.  Unless the gas stations are more than 12 hours apart, though, you should be fine. xoxo

I'm 13, 90 pounds. I do light exercise every day. My mom got her first period when she was 15. I have LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE SIGN YOU ARE GETTING YOUR FIRST PERIOD. I have so many symptoms it's not even funny. 1)Is it possible for me to get my period before my mom did? I think my Dad's side was 13/14 ish. Also, my mom thinks I have no chance of getting it so she won't buy me backup pads or panty liners just in case! 2) Should I buy my own? Hers are too big for me and she doesn't even have panty liners! I get discharge everyday and it's so uncomfortable!

Hey girl!

The age at which your mom got her first period can be a good indicator for when you might get yours, but it's not so precise down to the exact day! It's completely possible for you to get your period earlier OR later than your mom did. If she still refuses to buy you panty liners, buy your own. If your mom won't help you do whatever it takes to make your period a little more bearable, then take it upon yourself to buy your own. Good luck!

I'm 13, and haven't had my period yet..
Not yesterday but the day before that I found brown discharge in my underwear, and I wiped and found red stuff.
Then Yesterday I didn't get any brown discharge or red stuff. Today I didn't get anything yet. So what is this? Am i going to start my period soon? I had cravings, a break out, and cramps.

hey! Those are all signs that you are about to get your period, but there's no way to know for sure because everyone's different. If you have a doctor's appointment coming up you can always check in and ask about it. That might put your mind more at ease. good luck!

What does it mean when your BGF is really interested in your period and wants to know what happens, and how a tampon works, and what the best thing for cramps is???? i'm really confused on why he wants to know this stuff but i tell him anyways.
-thx in advance!!!

Hey girlie,

Hmm... usually we get this question the other way around! (Usually the BGF is sooo anti-period, he doesn't even want to hear the word.) It could be he's just curious about it because it's unfamiliar for him. It's not like he's going to get a period - so, if he has a lot of female friends, believe it or not he might feel a little left out! As long as he's asking, feel free to answer his questions. No need to be graphic, but he wants to know. He's supporting you and trying to get a better idea of what it means to be a girl. And we think that's pretty cool Smile

Yesterday i started my period but when i woke up this morning i found nothing in my pad.. i have swim practice in a little while so what am i supposed to do? Should i wear a tampon?
Is it possible for periods to last one or two days?

Hey girl,

Your period might just be super light. No need to worry, but you should always have back up. This means that no matter what your period seems to be doing, wear a pad or tampon in case (because it is your time of the month). You don't want to bleed through. As for swimming, definitely wear a tampon if you're comfortable with them. Your period might come back tomorrow or in the next few days (it may be extremely light), but if not don't get too worried. Sometimes they can be irregular, just talk to a parent if you're worried.

mod mod i have all the symptoms for my peroid but it wont come plus i am only 10

Hey girl,

If you have the symptoms, you could be getting your period in the near future. If it doesn't come, this might just be your body preparing itself for your period (in the coming years). Don't worry too much and if you start, talk to your mom or someone about dealing with it!

mod mod mod!I got discharge about a year ago and my breasts are 3 inches outward. but I still haven't had my period. I am almost 13. my friend said that if u are thin you will get your period sooner. if you are full figured you get it later. I am thin. I know bodies are all different and everything, but when will I get it? also about last year I was bleeding, so I told my mom and I thought I had my period... but I didn't and she still thinks I already had it. help!

Hey girlie,

That's actually not true - being drastically skinny or drastically overweight could make your period come later, but normal weight differences have nothing to do with your period. There's really no way to guarantee when you'll get your period! If you have specific questions (like about the bleeding that happened last year but never again), talk to your doctor. Even the professionals can't tell you when you'll get your first period, but they can talk with you about your concerns and make sure you're growing/maturing in a healthy way Smile That's what counts right now - not how old you are when you get it <3

MOD! MOD! MOD!
i am going into 7th grade this year! (I'm 12) the doctor said i will get my period in about 6 months-a year. Which is around the time my mom had hers,so i know its coming soon! i've have pubic hair, i started shaving my armpit hair about 6 months ago, i got breast buds also about 6 months ago,i got discharge in march, ive been tired 247 lately, and recently started getting slight headaches a lot. I haven't had pms or cramps yet. I've nervous im going to get it during school! As if school isn't stressful enough! I know my period might be far away but i'm nervous about swimming. I'm scared to wear tampons and i know my mom wouldn't let me wear them at first anyway. i'm afraid not wearing tampons will effect when my family goes on vacation and swimming and stuff is huge. Are there any signs to tell its like months away close? Is there anyway to not wear tampons and still go swimmming during your period? sorry this is long! Thank You!<3

Hey girl,

Unfortunately I can't tell you a clever way to tell your period is coming months in advance, but don't be too worried about it. When it first comes it will most likely be extremely light and easy to handle. Start out with pads and you can move to tampons when you're ready. For swimming, try to convince your mom to let you use tampons. If she won't let you, come to an agreement on what you can do so that you can go swimming with your period. Don't be scared to wear tampons--they're super easy and you don't even feel them once you're used to them! It definitely sounds like you're getting closer to getting your period, but don't worry too much. When your period is just starting you'll definitely be able to tell and run to the bathroom. Talk to your mom about the whole situation and explain your worries, etc. She'll give you some awesome advice and be able to help you out a ton

I play volleyball and just got my period, only prob is that we have to wear skin tight spandex as part of the uniform. Tampons are out of the question completely so how can I keep the outline of my pad from showing through?

Hey girlie,

Unfortunately, "panty lines" and "pad lines" are kinda unavoidable since you can't try tampons. The only thing to do is wear a lighter pad and change it more often, or try wearing a couple pairs of really tight underwear so it keeps the pad from moving around/bulking up. <3

I have 3 questions....
I got my period but don't know how to tell my mom... Any idea?
If your not on your period but want to practice with tampons, can you? Like can you try putting it in but take it right back out?
I'm on the swim team... Can I swim if my flow is really light without a tampon?

Hey chica!  Everyone girl get's their period at some point, so you don't need to worry about telling your mom- just let her know you need pads, panty liners, and tampons. I wouldn't recommend trying to put in tampons unless you have your period- it won't be very comfortable and it will be harder to get the tampon in.  You risk staining your clothes if you swim without a tampon.  Your flow may be light when you go it, but you can't predict how it will be all day and a light flow is still a flow, so you want protection!  xoxo

MOD MOD MOD MOD!!!!
I'm almost 13 (this August) and I have had my period since October 2010. I was 11. I was supposed to get my period last Friday but it didn't come. I've been wearing a pad but I'm super worried. I know I'm not pregnant because I have had NO sexual contact with any guy at all. I only kissed a guy once (on a dare) and that was last year. So why isn't my period coming? I'm too afraid to tell my parents because I don't want them to worry. But I'm stressing out about it! HELP!

Hey girlie,

Even having your period for two years doesn't mean it will be regular yet! I know it's annoying, but it's totally normal for your period to be irregular and sometimes be delayed. It can be affected by hormone levels, changes in sleep/stress/diet, etc. Try not to worry about it - if you're not sexually active, then you know you're not pregnant and it's just taking it's good ol' time this month. It will come when it's ready! <3

Hey cutie!

Yes this is normal, periods are often very irregular especially when you first start having it. Don't worry about it unless it stays very irregular. In this case, talk to a parent and maybe think about seeing a doctor, just to check up on everything!

I'm not sure if you CAN workout too much when you're on your period! My main question is, can I go running on my period if I'm wearing a pad? I don't think I'm ready for tampons yet. MODMODMMODMODMODMODMODMODMODMOD okay thank you but im scared of tampons. I know it isnt ok to put in when off ur period and still is risky when on because of tss. I dont no if its okay. And i will be there forever, and i dont know when to change. And i only have one absorbency, so i might leak. But hoe do i no when to change? Like im worried.

Hey again!

With tampons, it's always better to be safe than sorry. In general, you should change it every few hours, depending on how heavy your flow is. Bring a bunch of tampons with you so you're not worried about running out. If you have a really heavy flow, change it every 2 hours or so. If it's not too bad, try every 4 hours. Running to the bathroom is annoying and inconvenient, but you'll be glad you do when you don't leak.

Hey girl!

The only way you can swim while on your period is to use a tampon. I know that's kind of scary since this is your first period, but if you can use a tampon, you'll feel so much better and more confident. If you use a pad and go in the water, it will get all soggy and icky--not good!

Was it just from sitting to long or will I get my period soon?

Hey chica, if you were getting cramps because of your period, you'd probably get it in within the next day or two. But if this cramp that you're talking about was only for a few minutes and only happened once, then it was probably just a fluke. If ya start getting major cramps but don't get your period, you should see a doc. 10 is still really young to get your period, though, so if ya don't get it, be patient.

Okay, I have two questions. First of all, on Saturday, I got home really late, and went to bed without thinking (I'm on my period right now.) I was wearing my favorite white-ish, basically off white, pants and I didn't even change my pad. I bleed through and stained my jeans. How do I get it out?! And second, my period slows way down when I workout. Like, almost stopping. I ran out of tampons the other day, so I just wore a pad this morning when a went for a run. When I got back, there was barely any blood. But then it just went back to normal after that. Is that normal? Is it something I should be worried about? If so, should I talk to my mom about it? What should I say to her??
Sorry for ALL the questions, but I'm worried...
Thanks.(:

Hey babe,

Your pants should be fine as long as you put some stain stick or other stain solution on them!  I don't think it's strange for your period to change depending on how active you are.  It's bound to fluctuate all the time!  If you're worried though, asking your mom is a good idea.

Hey girl!

There's probably nothing wrong. Sometimes your period can be late because of stress, lack of sleep, or diet. Make sure you're getting lots of rest, eating a well-rounded diet, and relaxing. And just stop thinking about it! If it doesn't come ask your mom, a trusted adult, or doctor about it.

summergirl190, I can understand your situation. I worry about that too... but I think what I am going to do and what you should is to buy tampons with a light absorbency. Then change it when you feel you need too, but if your period is really light you can keep it in for up to 8 hours but not over. Plus, even if it is not full, they are so tiny that they should not hurt anyway. It is your choice in the end, however. If you do not feel it is safe for you to use even the light ones, that's okay. Plus, don't worry, your period probably will get heavier as your body gets into a normal cycle.

No! That is definitely a rumor.  Losing your virginity and putting in a tampon are two completely different things, you are definitely still a virgin.

Mod Mod Mod...
Okay,so I'm going to a camp in a different state for 3 days. Right now I'm on my 2nd period on the 3rd day. My last period lasted 1 week. The schedule for the camp is packed like for 7AM to 10PM lights out at 11PM. How do i handle this? Also the pads I use are super loud when you open them. I've never tryed a tampon before. Would that be a better idea? I'm scared to use a tampon though. Right now my flow is pretty heavy and last time it was kinda a medium flow. Any advice on anything about this would be great! Thanks!!! Smile

Hey girl, periods never come at a convenient time. But you'll get used to handling them, don't worry. For this camp, be sure to bring enough pads if you don't wanna use tampons. Pads usually last for 2 to 4 hours, so just monitor the day before you leave about how long you can use one before ya need to change it. Then at camp, if there aren't convenient break times, pull one of the female counselors aside and tell her your dilemma. She should be able to help you sneak off at intervals to make sure ya don't have any mishaps. As for the sound of opening a pad, don't even worry about that. Girls and boys use different restrooms for a reason. Periods are just a part of being a girl, so no one should say anything about that. And tampons are nothing to be scared of, but it's fine to wait til you've had your period for longer til ya start using them. If your period is super heavy and it's really worrying you, you might want to give tampons a try. But otherwise, you should be fine with pads. Enjoy your camp!

My period normally lasts about 3 to 5 days, but this time around it only lasted 1 night and 1 day!! Is this normal? I only got my period last august, so I don't know if it's ok for it to be a little irregular like this.

I can get tampons with plastic applicators in no big deal, but I can't get cardboard ones in for the life of me! The ones I have tried are tampax cardboard regular absorbency, so it's not like I tried a super plus one right away. I can get it in just a little bit, but then it starts to hurt really bad, especially when I pull it out even though it is just a little. Right after this happens I can always get in a tampax pearl regular absorbency. I want to use cardboard because they are more environmentally friendly and you can flush them. Why can't I get the cardboard one in even though it is the same brand and absorbency as the plastic one? Any tips?

Hey gal, if the cardboard tampons are hurting you, don't use 'em. They're just not as stream-lined as plastic ones, so use what works for you. You can save the environment in other ways. Smile

MOD MOD MOD,
Ok so i'm 11 and I don't have my period but I just want to clear some things up. One- do tampons suck up discharge too? Two- I swim like everyday in the summer so is their a perfect age to use tampons? Three- What is the diff between a panty-liner? Four- Whats the diff between spotting and an actual like, flow? Five- (LOL sorry 4 so many questions) I don't wanna have to bring my back-pack into the bathroom when I start (I'm still in grade school so we don't switch classes) but I don't usually wear pants with pockets.

Hi Girl,

1. Tampons should only be used during your period. If you'd like, you can use panty liners during the rest of the month

2. Tampons are great for swimming and can be used at any age you feel comfortable using them

3. A panty liner is a thin pad placed in your undies

4. Spotting is very light bleeding

5. you can keep tampons or pads in a small bag and bring that with you instead

good luck!

So im in flag line for my school and we have to go through a summer camp in the basically 100 degrees summer and we'll be doing some pretty hard stuff outside
Anyways my mom told me I should try tampons for the camp if it falls on 'my week' so I tried one and it hurt really bad when I started to put it in so I took it out but it hurt for a little bit
I don't want things to be even more awkward than it already is with talking to my my mom about this and in a while she's going to take me to the store to buy some easier tampons since the one I tried was a bargain brand
So 1. What should I look for while shopping
2. How do I make things less awkward
And 3. What can I refer to when trying a tampon?

Hey girl!

Don't worry, it's totally normal to have trouble putting in a tampon your first few times. Tampons are tampons, but try buying ones with plastic applicators, that can help you put them in easier. Your mom won't care if it's awkward, she's your mom! She's there for you no matter what the issue is, so just don't feel awkward. In every box of tampons there are directions on how to put one in, so check that out. Also, your mom could help by standing outside the bathroom to give you tips on how to put a tampon in. Good luck!

So whenever I use tampons, they always a leak, even when the string isnt saturated.... so I have to wear a panty liner... Is the leaking because I'm not putting it in all the way, or what? Also, now that it's summer, Im going to the pool and I CAN'T wear a panty liner, but I don't want to leak into my swim suit :/ my friend says my period will stop in the water, is this true? I'd really appreciate it if u answer my two quesions! Thanks!

Hey girl!

Check out our page on periods to answer some of your questions! http://www.girlslife.com/category/periods-period.aspx

You can always talk to your mom, a trusted adult, or a doctor about your tampon situation. And no, your period does NOT stop in the water, so you still need to use a tampon. You can even try out a "super" tampon which are a bit larger and can absorb more, so you'll feel less nervous in the water.

So I think I started my period, but I'm not entirely sure D: I've had regular light yellow discharge for about two years and have been growing pubic hair, armpit hair and boobs. Monday I went swimming, I took off my bathing suit and noticed in my bottoms some brown stuff that almost looked like poop but I know it wasn't, so then I looked in my underwear that I had worn before I went swimming and it was even worse in there. I had some pads that my mom gave me in a drawer so I put one on and when I checked it next there was more brown stuff. I got this all the way through Wednesday and then on Thursday there was barely any so I put in a pantyliner, then today I went to the bathroom and the pantyliner had a thick line of brown gunk. I haven't told my mom about it because I want to be sure and I don't know how to tell her. So is this my period? Also I'm going to the lake all day tomorrow and I really don't want to sit out. What do I do? Thanks Smile

Hey babe,

I'm not sure if it's definitely your period or just spotting. If it's been a somewhat heavy amount, it's probably your period! If you've had it since Monday, you might be at the end stages of it, so if you have it at all tomorrow it'll probably be pretty light. Talk to your mom about it, and don't worry. She's been there before! Just bring it up by saying, "Hey, Mom. Can we talk? I think I might have gotten my period." Tomorrow, take some pads or tampons with you and change frequently. You should be fine, though. Smile

Hi, so I was wondering if there was anything I could do to keep my period from coming, and like, keep it away for a couple more years or something. I've haven't had it yet, and I really don't want to. I'm just so worried abut it. It seems like such a pain. Thanks.

Hey Chica!

Sorry-no medical inventions yet that prevent our period from coming (though we totally wish there were). Periods can be annoying, but all your girl friends will be dealing with them, too. The best way to handle them is to be prepared. Have tampons and panty liners in your bathroom and some Midol for the cramps.

Hey girlie,

None of those things will have anything to do with your period! Periods can be affected by some things though, like changes in stress, diet, exercise, sleep, etc. But periods - especially when it's new - are almost always irregular! Try to relax and stay patient. Your bod will make your period come when it's ready! If you're worried about it or have questions about your lifestyle (and whether certain things could affect your period), ask your doctor <3

(sorry for all the mods im just kinda surprised) so uh I got my period for the first time today. I turned 12 in feb, but I never thought I would get my period NOW! I feel too young for it, like I should be 13 or something instead. I am freaked out about going to skool now! Our uniforms have pockets to carry pads, but not our gym uniforms! I have gym on wdnesdays. If I need to change a pad, how do I get it to the bathroom?! I CANT carry a bag, that'll be WAY too obvious and the teacher (a girl) will ask y. Maybe she will. Anyway I need help! Should I put it in my shoe?? In my underwear? I need help! And maybe some helpful period tips too! Thanks a TON!

Well oyou only have gym for a short time on wednesday right? Just change right beforehand every time and youll be perfectly fine. I promise. Pads can normally last for a bit before needing to be changed again. Trust me, all the girls who have their period as well completely understand what youre going through. No one is going to judge you. More often than not i just yell out in the middle of class asking for a tampon when I'm missing one. It's not something to be ashamed of. Good luck! xoxo kerra

Okay so usually my periods are super heavy. This one is really light for me, and I don't have any back pain like I usually do with periods. It's the second day. Is there anything wrong affecting cramps and flow? I'm worried :/

Hey girlie,

Your period can be affected by all kinds of things (changes in sleep, diet, stress, etc.), but chances are it's just irregular... because it's normal for periods to fluctuate sometimes! Try not to worry too much - just deal with your period and see how it is next month. Your bod is still growing and changing, so your period will naturally change too. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to chat with your doctor - the only person who can do a check up and make sure you're totally healthy. Otherwise, I would try to go on with your life and try not to think about it too much Smile Every girl's period is a lil irregular - nothing wrong with that! <3

It seems that I've been getting my period twice a month... I've had it for about two years now, and it has only started doing this in the last 6 months... Please help me!

Hey girl,

No worries! It's normal for periods to be, well, abnormal! It's good to see that you're keeping track of when you get your periods. That will come in handy if you do ever have a serious problem. However, it's common for periods to be late one month or early the next. So it's totally possible for you to get it twice in one month if you have one at the beginning and one at the end of the month! If nothing else seems to be bothering you, my bet is that you're perfectly fine! During your next checkup with your doc, mention any concerns you have and he/she will help clear things up for you Smile

Hey babe,

Yup, it's totally normal! Periods are always wacky, especially during the first few years of starting them! They can be early one month or late the next. Spotting is normal too. Unfortunately, they can be pretty random sometimes. It's nothing to worry about, but it certainly won't hurt to talk to your doc about it during your next checkup. MOD MOD MOD I'm in sixth grade now and I am 12. I have been developing since I was nine, and now i have been craving more food than my older brother and dad. I am average weight though, and have been having cramps and mood swings. I have got to say I have all of the signs.Mood swings, weird cravings, eating alot, very tired, breaking out, discharge, cramps, etc. I have thought that I would get it for about a year now, and still haven't. Can you please help and tell me what might be going on?!

Hey girlie,

What's going on... well, you're totally normal, that's for sure! You're growing and developing, so that's where the appetite, mood swings, etc. are coming in. It's puberty babe - and sometimes it's frustrating/slow, but it's happening! It's impossible for anyone to guarantee when you'll get your period (including your doctor), but try to calm down and reassure yourself that you're going through this process just like everyone else. You're normal and experiencing normal things. I wish we could tell ya how to speed it up, but you just gotta be patient, go with the flow, and your bod will start its period/keep developing when it's ready Smile

Hey girl,

If you're not allowed to use tampons/don't want to, talk to your mom about a menstrual cup which I have heard to be pretty healthy and convenient. If not, you could try a light cloth pad. Just make sure to change frequently. If you don't want to risk it, don't! Just wade and enjoy being with your friends. Unfortunately there is no way to prevent your period!

Hey girlie,

Periods are always irregular - some girls have them last for 2-3 days, while others have them last 8-9 days. But 10+ days is a lot, and it's not super safe to lose that much blood each month. Plus, it's totally annoying! See how your period is for the next few months. Since it just started not too long ago, it could take some time to even out. Be patient! But if this continues, it would be worth chatting to your doctor at your next checkup and making sure you're healthy. Your doc could discuss ways to regulate your period - or at least calm your fears by assuring you that this is normal and fine Smile

Hey girl!

Periods can be unpredictable...especially when we first get them. Check out our period section to answer your questions: http://www.girlslife.com/category/periods-period.aspx. If you haven't had it for three months, you aren't regular yet. It can take over a  year for girls to become regular after they get their first period. If you miss another, call your doc. They'll be able to answer your questions.

Is that what im suppose to do? Because one of my friends mom does the same thing but some of them dont. So am i supposed to throw the used cotten ball part in the toilet when im done? If not what do i do with it?
Thanks Smile

Hey Girly!

Not awkward! We get these kinds of questions all the time Smile. You always want to put the plastic tube in the garbage. It will clog the toilet if you flush it down. For the most part, flushing down the actual tampon (the cotton ball part) is okay. Some places will have sensitive plumbing and might ask you to put feminine products in the trash to be safe.

All types of girls can use tampons. It might be an old urban legend that you can only use one if you are not a virgin. Hey girlie,

You have the perfect reason to bring up the topic again with her, since you'll be swimming in a few days with your period! Go up to her when she has a free minute and she's relaxed, happy, calm, aka not stressing out. Tell her you're going to be swimming this weekend and you're also supposed to have your period, so you wanted to talk to her again about possibly starting to use tampons. Stay calm and listen to her - ask her questions and try to put yourself in her shoes, so you can understand why she feels uncomfy or why she says no. But she might surprise you and say yes! See what happens and try to compromise the best you can <3

Hey girlie,

You should definitely wear some protection, because you never know how your flow will change or if it'll surprise you! All brands of tampons have "Light" varieties, so give them a try if your flow is really light. Even better for you, the Light sizes are the smallest, so they're the easiest to practice with and use for the first time Smile I love Tampax Pearl Lights because they go in super easy - give them a try!

Hey girlie,

It could have something to do with your weight, but it's TOTALLY normal for your period to be irregular, especially since it just started. Try to stay calm and make sure you're being healthy (eat a balanced diet, get plenty of rest, etc.) - that's the best thing to do! sorry I have a few questions
1. When u have your period is it actually blood coming out or something else.
2. What is a safe age to wear a tampon
3. What is TSS
4. When you wear a pad does it feel like your vagina is soaked
5. How would you keep track of your period

Hey girlie,

1. Yes, it is blood coming out. If you want to know exactly what it is (or why it happens), try asking your doctor all your questions at your next check up. It's nature in action, which is pretty cool - but you can always get more info on exactly what your bod is doing when it is going through a period!

2. It's different for every girl. The best age will be the age when you feel mature enough to change your tampon every 4-6 hours (or no more than 8 hours) and will stick with it until you get the hang of it. I use tampons and love them, so I recommend it!

3. http://www.girlslife.com/post/2008/07/31/TSS-Tampons.aspx

4. No way! You might feel a tiny bit wet at times because your flow comes out onto the pad, but the pad absorbs the liquid and makes you feel dry pretty quickly.

5. I usually put a small red dot in my day planner (like the book you use to keep track of homework, etc.) on the day I got my period. That way, I can count about 28 days from then and can expect to get my next period around that time!

It's not a big deal to start using tampons, and it especially won't be super awkward if you stay calm and ask in a confident way. Go up to mom when she has a free minute and say something like, "Hey mom, I'm probably gonna get my period next week and I just wanted to remind you about me learning how to use tampons so I can be ready for summer." Be chill about it and be straight with her - that's the best way to handle it! Smile

I use U by Kotex for tweens, is tht a good type of pad?? I just tried it out a couple of hours ago....will it hold all the blood on??? Also, I started my 4 or 5th period...is it strange for my period to start on april 2nd and start again on april 30th?? I thought it happens 1 month later on the same day but its always different! Frown Also, tomorrow I have gym class, what should I do to protect from leaking( also: i go 2 a all girls skool so should I bring pads to skool, i see others do it all the time???)

Hey babe,

At this age your flow is bound to be irregular, it really won't become predictable until your later teen years.

Yes, your pad should hold it sufficiently, but if it doesn't then your best bet is to give tampons a shot.

i have a question. when ever i run or play sports i get a lot of sweat in my underwear and i know its sweat not discharge. anyway where is the sweat coming from is it coming from my legs or my vagina? and how can i make it not fell as wet "down there"
thank you so much

Hey girlie,

Your body sweats all over, but some areas have more sweat glands than others, like between your legs.  You can't really make it occur less, but you can wash more thoroughly where you sweat more.

MOD MOD MOD!
I'm 14 and haven't gotten my period yet. I really couldn't care less in fact, I'm pretty glad I haven't had to deal with it yet, but my mom isn't. She keeps telling me to eat more of this, do more of that in the hopes it'll speed up my hormones. I know it won't really work, but she is hopelessly old fashioned, and thinks that since I'm a "late-bloomer" I'm less feminine, her worst fear. I do lots of girly things, but she just can't be satisfied! What can I do to get her off my back?

Hey girl,

Your period can be slower if you're underweight or super athletic, so why not ask your mom if you can set up an appointment with your doc? That way, you can get some professional recommendations about what's up with your period and get the advice you need. As for being feminine, let your mom know that you have your own personality -- she'll understand that!

MOD MOD MOD!
So I'm 14, and I haven't had my first period yet. I'm a bit under weight, about (edited by mod) lbs, and I'm 5'1. I'm wondering 1. What will happen if it never comes? and 2. Does my weight have anything to do about it?
Thanks!

Hey girlie,

Your first period can be affected by all sorts of body factors including your weight, but we can't tell you exactly why your period hasn't come yet. But first periods come at all different ages depending on the girl - some girls get it as late as 16! Don't panic Smile If you have questions about your weight, your period, or anything else body-related, definitely talk to your doctor, who is the only person qualified to give you advice like that Smile

MOD MOD MOD!!! last question, lol
Okay, so I'm on my period and I was like cleaning up down there, like wiping until there was completely nothing, this is kinda nasty, but I was wondering how big your vagina was like the actual vagina itself, so I stuck my finger up there... Did I masturbate by doing that??bc now I'm like really grossed out so yeah, Just wondering.

I wouldn't consider that masturbation, no.  You didn't intentionally do it with some kind of pleasurable aim.  Even if it was, that wouldn't be anything to be grossed out by.

By the way, your actual vaginal canal is only a few inches long.

Hi so I'm on my period and I'm having really really bad cramps, so I was thinking about taking a hot bath, but I read that your not supposed to take a bath while your on your period.. Is this true???
also, should I tell my mom about my cramps and see if she has any advice. And my periods heavy and it's only the second day!!!

Hey girlie,

There's absolutely nothing wrong with taking a bath while you're on your period.  If anything, it should help soothe your muscles.  And your mom should have some advice, so why not tell her!

Hey girl,

There's really no reason to want to have it right now.  Every girl will get it at a different time, whenever their bodies are ready.  Anyways, in the end, nothing really changes once you get your first time period.  You're still the same girl.  Try to distract yourself by reading, of focusing on schoolwork, sports, etc.

My period has been really abnormal lately. Like a few months ago it didn't come at all, then it was like a week late...etc. My period has always been 100% normal and always came on the exact day its supposed. I've lost a bit of weight which my mom thinks might be causing this. I haven't intentionally been trying to loose weight but the last time I went to the doc I weighed 97 pounds...and I'm 16, so I'm really worried this is super unhealthy.
HELP!!!

Hey girl,

Weight loss can affect your period, and when you're young you can be irregular in general. If you're still getting periods, I wouldn't be too worried! If you're concerned about your weight, you should talk to your doctor to see what BMI range you fall under to make sure you're healthy.

Nope, the pantyliner would just absorb the water around it.  You're gonna' need to use a tampon if you're on your period in the pool. Jordan S.

Right now I use pads for my period but I really want to use tampons! I have used tampons before and I love using them but I dont want to tell my mom that I want to use them.
Should I secretly buy them?? What should I do? And since Im 12 is that "too young" to use tampons??

Hey chica!

Pads are a safer option at your age, so you should heed your mom's judgement. Using tampons require making sure to change them every four to six hours and that it is of low absorbency, definitely something to start using when your mom thinks you should. <3

So many people I know are sexually active and taking birth control but then there are also a lot of people just wanting to reduce their periods. So thanks for giving information about it, I think the more the better because those of us not currently on it want to know more. Plus some of my friends on it, dont even know a lot and are still kind of ignorant about certain birth control things. Did you know that the US teen birth rate is still the highest in the developed world?
Also, you used to have so many articles about going to the Gyno, why has GL stopped posting those articles? I know they were always helpful, now I just go to other places online to find out more information about OB/GYN stuff.

Hey girlie,

I'm glad you found helpful info in our articles, birth control-related or otherwise. That makes us happy to hear! Smile Those articles are still on our site and can be found by using our "sections" at the top of the page or our search bar. We just have to write articles that are helpful for all our readers so, sometimes, we have to focus on younger topics as well. But don't worry - we know you're out there and know you need that info, so ask any questions you need anytime! Smile

I'm so sorry, babe, but there really is no healthy way to get rid of your period.  The pills on this link are definitely not something you want to be doing, they have not even been studied fully yet. At some point you will be able to cut down on your periods when you're sexually active and are taking birth control.  But for now it will only be harmful to your body if you resort to desperate measures by taking pills such as these. MOD MOD MOD!!! Im 12 and i REALLY want to take these shots so i wont have a period ever again. Do you think im older enough to take them? I really want to but i dont know what age you have to beFrown
Thanks soo muchSmile
Your friend xox

Hey babe,

The shots that she takes is not something that is meant to be used for the purpose of not getting a period.  You really shouldn't start getting the shots until you're sexually active, since their intended use is for birth control.  In my opinion, you're definitely too young, and I highly doubt that a doctor would be willing to allow you to.

Keep in mind though, these shots don't stop her period entirely, only for the duration of the vaccine.

Hey girlie,

Check out this article - turns out, it's TOTALLY normal for your period to be irregular! 2 weeks, 5 weeks, 4 weeks... it's rare for a girl to always get her period every 28 days. So don't worry! Smile

MOD MOD MOD MOD!!Hey, got a weird question here. I'm going to be starting softball soon. I went through basketball with my period, but it was hard considering all the running.
Are tampons REALLY safe? I was going to try them on my next cycle, but I read a few sites and I got kind of scared. TSS? What is it and is it common? I REALLY don't want to have to go through a sport with a pad, so should I try? And I want to try it on my own, sense my mom isn't really girlie and she's basically used a pad her whole life.
Would I be okay if I used one once or twice a cycle at first? Or should I just NOT use them?

Hey girlie,

Tampons are TOTALLY safe, babe! I only use tampons and love them. Check out the two articles below for more info about TSS. As the articles say, as long as you don't leave your tampons in for a longgggg time, you'll be fine! Just stick to light/regular tampons (or super if you're on a heavy flow day) and change them every 4-6 hours. The longest I'll go is overnight, about 8 hours. But I change them as soon as I wake up and I'm completely fine - along with thousands of other girls and women who use them too! Smile

If you're not sexually active, don't freak out -- it's normal for periods to be irregular when you're young! The doc has seen everything, so don't be scared to talk to him / her about your symptoms so you can get what you need to stop having cramps. You'll be fine!

I haven't gotten my period yet but I've been getting discharge for about a year, I get cramps once in a while, and I'm 14. I feel like I should've gotten my period a while ago. Is there an age when I should get my period by?

Hey girlie,

No, there is no specific age that you should get your period by.  You really just get it when your body is ready.  Discharge has no relation to your period, discharge is merely your body's way of cleaning itself down there.

JANUARY 13 was the first time I got my period but I haven't got it since then... I know periods are irregular at first but is this normal??? Is it even possible for people to never get their periods again???

Hey girlie,

While I'm sure that, in super rare cases, someone could get their first period and never get it again... I 99% doubt that will happen to you. Like you said, periods are irregular - especially at first! And they can be affected by all sorts of things, including diet, changes in sleep, stress, hormones, exercise, etc. If you're concerned, you can always go to your doctor and ask him/her any questions you have. <3 Try to hang in there!

Mod~ I give up. Honestly. I've asked the same question 3 times and you don't know what I'm asking.

Hey girl,

Your comments have been to two different mods tonight and we've done our best to answer your questions based on the info you've given us! You can't speed up your period by doing weird exercises or anything like that, so you'll just have to pack pads / tampons in case it comes on your trip. But it will still be a fun vacation no matter what happens!

Mod~ I still think there is a misunderstanding. As I stated in my first post, I am not in the first few months of my period, I've been having it for years. It's not the irregularity I'm worried about, and I'm not concerned about a pregnancy. My period is late and I'm worried I might get it a week from now when I'm on a trip and I was wondering if there was something I could do, such as an exercise or nutritional supplement, that might kick start it.

Hey girl,

If you're irregular you can talk to a doc, but if you're worried about the trip, talk to your mom about starting to use tampons while you're exercising. And don't worry if it comes on the trip -- it's normal! Have fun!!

Mod~ Thank you for linking me to the article, but it was the same one that I posted the question on and it wasn't really at all what I was asking. I guess I should rephrase it. My period it unusually was wondering if there is something I could do to get it to come.

Hey girl,

Periods can be irregular for your first few months, so don't worry if you're off schedule! If you're not sexually active, there's nothing to worry about.

I think I got my first period today. I'm 15 and in recovery for an eating disorder, so it's probably late because of how underweight I was up until this point. Anyways, yesterday there was a large brown spot in my underwear, but no blood really. Was this my period yesterday? The brown didn't seem like blood... Also, over a year ago I encountered the same brown spot but nothing happened the next day. Is it just a coincidence or did my period try to come last year but couldn't because of my weight? Hey girly! It is normal to skip a period every once in a while, especially when you are so young. If you just recently started your period then you are fine because your body is not in a cycle yet so you may not get it every month. Also as you body is changing your hormones change as well so your body has to adjust.

Hey Kels,

NO, that is a rumor and not true! Sooooo many women use tampons to control their periods and go on to have happy, healthy kids! Just be responsible and change your tampon about every 6 hours (or less if your period is heavier). As long as you follow the directions and stay responsible about it, you have nothing to worry about <3

When it comes using tampons, they say you shouldnt use one just to practice if you arent having your period because a few reasons. First you may be dryer down there, there are times when we are just more lubricated down there and if you arent you can use some personal lubricant like KY or Astroglide. And then if you are practicing, you shouldnt accidentally leave it in for long periods of time, so you should just insert it and then take it out soon after to see what it feels like.

i out in my first tampon today and it went in pretty good and came out pretty good. but when i pushed it in it kept sliding out a few centimeters so i could still see it. and when i tried sitting down it felt a little uncomfortable and same with when i was standing up. do u have any advice for next time that will help this??????????

Practice makes perfect.  As is, your body has no idea what's going on.  It could be that it's not used to something being there or it could be because you haven't quite got the hang on putting it in yet. Jordan S.

MOD MOD MOD I've had my period for about four years it was pretty normal usually one week a month but I didn't get my period in February and I don't know why I'm not under weight and I haven't had sex so Idk what it could be

Hey girlie,

Periods are affected by all sorts of things - even stress or changes in sleep, diet and emotions could have messed up your cycle. Whatever it was, it's nothing to worry about right now! Since you haven't been sexually active, there's no way you're pregnant - chances are you're just experiencing a normal irregular period. They happen to all of us, even when we've had our period for years. Just try to relax and treat your body well. It'll come soon - or at the very least, next month. If you skip next month too, best to check with your doc just to be safe Smile

MODMODMOD okay so I have had my period for a couple of months now, and just had it about 2 weeks now. But today I just got this lightish brown colored stuff which I am guessing is just old blood? Is it possible to get your period again after just 2 weeks??! Help me!

Hey girl,

This is totally normal! It's possible to get a full period again after 2 or 3 weeks, because it's normal for periods to be irregular for a while - especially during the first year. Spotting is normal too! Read this article for some more details and a little reassurance Smile If you have more questions and concerns, you shouldn't feel awkward asking your doctor. He/she is a professional and can tell ya all you need to know!!

MOD MOD MOD: I've had my period for almost 3 years now, but there's one thing...I don't seem to "flow" at night! usually your supposed to wear bigger or thicker pads at night for your flow but I get nothing! I'm kind of worried...should I be?
Thanks!

hey! As long as you're fairly regular you should be fine, but consult with your doctor anyway next time you have a check up if you're worried Smile

Mod I have a question will my period ever come? I'm twelve and I have hair down there and its a little thike but i dont have alot i don't have big boobs but they still hurt I don't have armpit hair I'm pretty tall for my age and is it safe for me to try a tampon on just to see what it feels like? Plez answer soon thanx

Hey Hello kitty love, of course you'll get your period girl. Some girls get theirs later on in life and that might be the case with you. You can practice inserting it, but it's probably better to wait until you're on your period. When you're having your period, it's easier for the tampon to slip in because it is more moist down there. If you do decide to pratice get a small one and take it out right away. Hope this helps! Xoxo

Hey radiolovergirl, it can take up to 2 years for your period to become regular and stick to a certain scheldue, so maybe that's what is going on. I would head to the doctors just to be on the safe side. They'll tell you what you need to know. Hope this helps! Xoxo

Mod! Mod! Mod! I have a couple of really important questions i need you to answer. Ok the first one is i am going to start using tampons which size do you suggest me using first? I am a regular but most the time low flow i guess you could say.The second question is do you HAVE to use a tampon when you swim if you are on your period or will it just stop when you hit the water? And thirdly i am really scared to start using tampons bc all of my friends have told me that they could get stuck up in you and im afraid one will get stuck up in me. And it would be soo emmbarrassing to have to go to the doctor to get that removed so is it true? Thanks sooooo much! Smile xoxo

Hey babe,

Generally, I'd stay stick with a regular unless there are any drastic increases or decreases in your flow
For when you're swimming, a tampon will still work underwater.  It's actually one of the only ways to hold back your flow while you're in the pool.

As far as them getting stuck up there, that's nearly impossible.  It can happen in very very rare cases only.

MOD!
I've had discharge for like 2 years now and i still havnt had my period. is this normal??

Hey babe,

Discharge really doesn't have very much to do with your period.  It's your body's natural way of keeping things neat and healthy down there.

birth control is a topical subject, and it's obvious that not everyone has the same views on it, so I'm sure a lot of us would agree that you should refrain from telling us what to believe about it.
You give us lots of advice about other things, and we trust you, so please don't give us "advice" about controversial things that go against some people's religion.

Mod Mod Mod! I really need your help... Is there anyway I can control my period? I am also 15. Also I got my period this week and on Thursday I had gym class and of course it leaked and got on my gym pants and I think this boy saw it and then he told other guys and I heard people talking about me! And I don't know what to do! I am so self concious about it and frustrated and stressed.

Hey girl,

Periods are natural, so if people are making fun of them it's because they're immature, which isn't something you need to worry about! If you want to start using tampons during sports, talk to your mom about different options and why you want to use them when you're in gym class. Otherwise, try just using a fresh pad right before gym starts and opting for the heavy / long varieties so you'll have the most coverage! Don't listen to what they say, because it really doesn't matter in the long run, and people will forget about it pretty quickly!

(but im starting to get hair down their so ya idk)

Hey oreodiamond, the cramps could be a sign of your period coming. Maybe it's your bod's way of telling it to get prepared. Don't be nervous about asking your mom to shave. She's a woman so she knows exactly how it is. She's actually the best person to talk to about it, because she has already gone through everything you are, so she'll give the best advice. MOD!!! Ok so during my FAVE time of month, it feels like I'm peeing myself or something. Is this natural and do I just like let it fall out????

Hey girlie,

Check out this article - that's just clots that you're feeling! They can be brown or red, but we all agree... they feel GROOOOOSS. We've all been there. You basically just have to let them come out, take a deep breath, and try to move past it. Your pad will soak it up and it'll be fine! Sometimes they can cause leaks (if your pad is already kinda filled), but most of the time you should have nothing to worry about <3

So I just got my period yesterday. My mom said to wear pads for the first day and then you can wear tampons, which I did. But how often to you normally get your period everyday? I don't really know alot about it but it seems like I got mine alot today. And how can you tell if its heavy or light? Thank you!

It starts out heavy as first and gets lighter as the week goes on. It varied from week to week how heavy it is. But thats the general trend. Also theres no way to tell how heavy its going to be. Just be prepared for the worst and hope for the best! xoxo kerra

So I just got my period. I told my mom and everything so ya. Today and yesterday I was wearing pads but it didn't seem like enough. I just tried a tampon and it worked but still a little blood was in my underwear. Am I still suppost to wear a pad to if I'm wearing a tampon? And what do you think is they best pad/tampon brand? And can you like please tell me some other stuff I need to know? Thank you so much!

Well it seems as if you have a stronger flow. So try a super tampon. Or even heavier. That should help you not leak. If you have a strong enough tampon you shouldnt need a pad too. I never use pads. So I cant really tell you a brand. But i prefer tampax pearl for tampons. Just make sure you change your tampon enough and you should be fine with leaks etc. Its something you learn with time. So dont fret if you dont get it at first. xoxo kerra

I've only had two periods in my whole life. One was in February of 2010, and the other one, which was only a little tiny bit of blood was in May of 2011. But even though my periods are very unregular, I developed my breast and everything else really early, like in 3rd grade. And I have a lot of dischange, all the time. Is this normal? Why am I getting large amounts of discharge even though I haven't had a period in over 9 months?
Thanks, <3Smile

Hey girl! Although an irregular period when you're young is normal, I would suggest talking to your doctor if you're worried. It's normal to have a lot of discharge but no period, especially if you are active and play sports. You are still growing and your body is still adjusting, but I would suggest talking to a professional just to make sure everything is okay!

I just got my period today. I am very unhappy, and I feel like crying. I feel depressed, and like I can't have fun. My mom wasn't happy that I was upset about getting my period. I feel uncomfortable talking about my body, or anything such. It makes me feel very strange and weird. I don't want to feel that way, but I just do. My period is bugging me, because I don't want it. I know it makes you a woman and such. But I feel depressed, and like I want to die inside. My mom seemed disappointed at my sad reaction. I really just want to cry all day. I am not happy about this. I want to be a woman, just not this way. I didn't want it to come this early. I am only 12. And I wasn't expecting it. Please help me speed it up, and help my feel happy about this. I don't want my mom to hate me.

Thanks

MOD MOD MOD I really want to try tampons but my mom is worried that since my period isn't completely regular yet, that one morning i will put in a tampon thinking i am still on a regular day and when i go to take it out, it will hurt because it wont have enough absorbed on it, because my period was alot lighter than expected...sorry if that was really confusing!! But will it hurt if that happens? And what brand of tampons do u prefer? thank you!!!!!

Hey Sarah_Scoop, I'm not sure if that will happen. I don't use tampons, so your mom would defintely know more than me in that area. Maybe you could try using the tampon once your period starts to lighten, so you won't have to worry about the flow changing. Some of my friends use Kotex, so check them out. Xoxo

This is an embarrasing question, but here goes. ive had my period for 5 yrs and just today tried a tampon for the second time to just practice (im due for my period any day now....i can feel it coming). i inserted it lying on my back with my legs spread (awk, i know) and i put it in. i didnt push in the applicator (i didnt wanna waste another tampon) and i took it out...and my vagina made a farting noise! a little bit of clear stuff came out (at least it felt that way) it was sooo gross and i was sooo scared........wat happened? and why? am i normal? HELP!

Oh, don't even worry, girl.  This is all completely normal.

The "farting noise" is called queefing.  Air gets caught in between your legs rather easily, especially when inserting a tampon.  The sound is just the air escaping/rushing out.  It's nothing to be embarrassed about.  Every girl does it.

The clear stuff that came out is also normal, it's just kind of a down-there "natural lubricant."  It keeps everything healthy inside.

Yeah, when it comes to being on the pill.... 50% more teens are on than pill than 10 years ago. And while some of it is because of hormonal things more of it is just because we are dating when we are younger. In other countries its even more of the teens who are on the pill.

No problem, girl! Smile The pediatrician won't do the exam, but they might refer you to another doctor who specializes in period/"down there" issues. They could do a full exam or they could just look down there - it depends what they think is necessary. But like I said, don't feel weird about it! It'll be odd to get used to at first, but they do it all the time and are total professionals! <3

Sorry for all the questions!
So when you went did they just ask you questions or did they look down there? Because that would be awkward. And what kind of questions will they ask you?

No problem, that's what I'm here for Smile They did both - asked me questions and did an exam. But relax - it's not painful or awkward because doctors deal with this (and much more serious, weirder things) every single day. This is important for your health and you will feel so much better when you get it all taken care of. As for the questions, it was simple stuff like the last day of your most recent period, how often it's been happening, do you smoke/drink/have sex, how often to do you exercise...basically all the stuff that is important for them to know. Just be honest! <3

So I get my periods every 2 weeks ( its been like this since nov.) Im confused because, I can't figgured out when I'm ovulating or why I'm getting my period every 2 weeks or so. Here's a list of my periods for jan-feb
Jan 3-8
Jan 17-19
Jan 29-feb 1
Im about to start again!
That's 4 periods in a month and a half! What's wrong with me?

Hey girlie,

You should have about a week or two more between periods - typically, you should get them every 28 days (on average). I would definitely call your doctor to talk about this. It doesn't mean anything is WRONG with you, but your hormones might be a little imbalanced and it could be causing all these extra periods. It's not great to lose that much extra blood (sorry, gross...but it could affect your vitamin levels, especially your iron), so it's worth chatting with your doc as soon as you can Smile

Birth control-does work!

I agree the only way to make our periods "hit the road" is to get on birth control. My cousin has been on it since she was 13 and some of my friends have either been on it for a while or recently just gotten on it. Some because they had period problems and some because they started dating and wanted to be safe. I recently had a talk with my mom about it but it wasnt a long talk.

I think a lot of us would be amazed if we knew how many of us were on it. I was doing some studying and I think its about 30% or more of girls our age who are on birth control, so its kind of common. Plus if you go to the gyno the doctors recommend it if you start dating and are thinking about getting serious.

And there are lots of other uses for birth control pills than just to prevent pregnancy, they can also be used to regulate your period. Some girls go a whole month with a period, but hey its your call.

MOD MOD MOD!!!!!!!! hi so I really wanna use tampons but I don't know how I should ask my mom. I have had my period for 8 months like and it is regular now I want to try tampons because pads are really uncomfortable. But i just dont know how to ask and i am afraid she will say no .
Can you please give me a few ideas how to ask, and I don't have my period now but I will in a few weeks. Thanks so. Much

Hey girl,

Just let her know how much it would mean to you to grab a box of tampons and give it a try! Tell her you feel ready to take this next step - you're responsible enough to change them when you have to, and you're so excited to feel less uncomfortable/dirty by tossing pads to the curb. Remind her that sports, swimming, and other activities will be way easier with tampons. Just let her know how much you really want to try them. Even offer to put your allowance towards a box, if she lets you. Good luck! <3

It means "moderator" - that's me! Me and a team of other older girls approve all your comments before they go public, screen them for offensive language/topics, and answer your advice questions. Putting "MOD MOD" in your comment when you want our advice will help get our attention Smile

I've had my period 12 days, but there was a couple days where it seemed to be gone, so technically 10. It seemed to be much lighter last night but now I have a medium/light flow again! This is my 4 period or something like that. Should I be worried? And if it continues..should I call the doctor?

When you are still young this is quite common so I think you will be ok. If you keep bleeding you should go to the doctor.

MOD MOD MOD!
I'm 13 & I shave my legs but I don't shave my arms because my grandma has always scared me into thinking it'll grow back brown instead of blond (peachish), since I have brown hair. Is this true? Cause it starts to get a little embarrassing having hairier arms than all the other girls, and soon it'll be summer and I won't be able to hide under a jacket.

It may grow back darker - but if you keep it shaved it wont matter. Shaving armpits is so easyy. It takes about 2 seconds. Dont be scared Smile xoxo kerra
