I'm 13 and i still haven't started my period, i also really don't weigh that much :\ only 85 pounds.. im afraid that i will never start my period. I watched this show called supersize vs super skinny and it said that being underweight can cause you not to have your period and it really started to freak me out... i Have had discharge for about 5-6 months and i have hair "down there" but not under my arms.. will i start my period soon?

Usually my discharge is light to medium but this week it is more runny. Plus it is coming on really heavy. I've been a a dance camp all week but that's it. Is something wrong? Is it a sign that my first period is coming? I've also been cramping a lot and a little dizzy at times. Help?

Ive had hair under my arms and "down there" for about 2 and a half years. Ive been getting discharge for about 1 year and a half. I dont feel any attitude changes, or mood swings, or cramps, like symptoms of a period. I am 14 years old, my grandma got hers when she was 14, and my cousin got hers when she was 16. idk when my mom did because I was from a donor egg.. so. When am I going to get it i dont want to start bleeding out of nowhere!

Hey chica! Sounds like that might be your period- take some ibuprofein for youe cramps and headache and take a nap in the middle of the day, which should help your mood swings a little.  xoxo

MOD MOD im 13 years old i have had the icky gel stuff for a long time close to a year or so. i always get really depressed at night or even in the middle of thee day and i feel like just bursting into tears. i dont ever get cranky though randomly. i wear a 32 a bra. i dont really know when my mom got hers. i have had hair under my arms for 5 years... and down under for like 2 years. i dont really get any cramps. i get hungry really fast and always eat a lot. I have a little bit of a belly but have always had one. I'm freaking out because i "blossomed" early but just went through a growth spirt (that i think has stopped") and i am worried about not getting mine. Plz respond! i have taken a bunch of quizzes that tell me I'm soon but i just dont know

Hey girlie, you're definitely going through puberty. Unfortunately, there is no real science behind when you get your period. Even a doctor couldn't tell you for sure. Just be prepared. Ask your mom to buy you pads and keep one in your purse or in your locker just in case you get it while you're out or at school.

Hi My name is Esmeralda im 14 years old. I fist got my period 3 moths ago it is july and i still havent had it yet so im concerened of its happening? it all started April 19 when i used the bathroom and wiped and saw red blood on the paper toilet.I then put a pad and went to school at school i changed it once the blood was now brown during that week on saturday it turned light purple sort of lilac-ish. I told my mom and she saw but was not convinced it was my period because the flow was medium and it still hasnt returned. But i told my doctor and she said it was my first period. But i'd like to know the signs of its return?

by esmelicious on 7/23/2013 5:05:02 PM

Hi Smile
Im 12 and 1/2 my mom thinks I will my period soon. Im a little scared but I also think she's right. I have lots of discharge and I have to use panty liners. I havent been been feeling well lately and my nose bleed this morning. I've been kinda grumpy lately and feel tired most of the time. I can't stop eating. I weigh over 100 pounds and I have breasts and pubic hair. I know the non stop eating could be caused by just growing but the rest is kinda anonymous in my mind. ?.? Any ideas Tong

Hey girl, I think it will definitely be soon!

So I haven't gotten my period yet, I'm 13 and I have a few questions to make sure I'm growing normal...
I've been getting discharge daily, (few months now) but randomly ill get green dots in it
Is my down south area suppose to smell creamy every now and then?
My boobies have felt tender for a while now
My guts have been hurting
I get frustrated easily/ I always want to be right
(Here's a random one: at what age do you get turned on at?)
I've talked to 3 of my bffs and asked them for advice about how to tell my mom and they tolde to tell her straight up...
My mom hasn't given me the talk yet(but I've looked up and googled some stuff)
My mom have me some pads last summer in case I got my period during camp... (Didnt and have t used them) should I use them now during discharge? They are kinda big and don't fit in my undies... Just the travel sized ones).
So if anyone knows or feels the same way leave me a message please! Smile I'm really worried about the smell though... Thanks

I have some serious period irregularity issues and shouldn't be by now because I am 19 and have had my period since I was 12. I just don't understand, like the timing of my periods come in bouts like sometimes ill get it every 20 days and a few times this year I've gotten it every 45 days(which is not considered normal), but mainly I get it super early like any where from every 20 days or 24 days. However, in the beginning of the year i I would just like to know if there is a reason for these super early periods, thank you.
miserably irregular

Hey girl,

You should def talk to your doctor if you're worried. There's no specific answer because everyone's body is different.

What does it mean if you have clumpy dark brown discharge? I looked up online and it says it could be signs that I'm getting my period. Is this true??

by snowbellcat on 6/13/2013 6:51:18 PM

hi I have a questions , I started my period when I was in 8th grade now I'm in 11th grade,I had my period around the 15, but for these past few months I've had it around the 11 or 12, well this month I started bleeding on the 8th like I was starting well the next day It was very light, I still haven't bleed like a normal period... and I'm scared, what does it mean when it does that?

Hey girl! Don't worry. Being irregular as a teenager is completely normal. If you are really concerned (which you don't have any reason to be) make sure you talk to your parent/guardian. Maybe you should go in for a doctor's visit so he can reassure you that you're totally okay! xx

Im 12, my birthday was on march 18, and I haven't got my period yet. I have hair down south and under my arms. I have been growing my breasts for more than 1 and 1/2 years now. I need to know the signs to my period, and I really don't understand what discharge is. I had icky things in my undie once, well that was the only time I saw it. and as I said my breasts have been growing, and I know I have to wear a bra now, but they are uncomfortable, I tried the biggest sign, but its still uncomfortable! should I start wearing the bras that have round not flat from up there? please help!
Gracie (Diana113)

Hey girlie. Just because you've turned 12 doesn't mean that you'll get your period right away. Everyone starts their period at different times. Some are 11 when they start, while others don't get their period until their 14. It doesn't mean anything is wrong with you. It's all normal. Your breasts growing is a part of this normal process. To learn more about the stages of puberty, click here. As for bras, they're like shoes. You just have to go shopping to find the right one! But don't worry, we've got you covered on finding the perfect bra too. Just click here. Also, remember to have a little patience. Things will happen in due time! xx

MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD Am unsure about when my period may start as i havent had any of that discharge and the hair under my arms hadnt grown but everything else is happening like i am always really crampy and sooo hormonal somtimes i just break down in tears for nothing and i am worried and my friend has had her period so i sorta want mine to come and i am twelve and a half now so it is really due. I an like super skinny so i havent really being geting breasts as obviously as everyone else put now i am. Umm i also have hairs down south and sweat and smell qite alot so what is the verdict ? Please help me !

Hey girlie, unfortunately there is no exact formula, even for doctors. So I can't tell you when you'll get it. But usually girls start to get discharge before they get their period. So when you start to get that then it's a good sign that your period will follow.

Dear MOD,
I have had my period for a year-ish now. i think pads are gross and bulky but my mom wont let me use tampons. every time i bring it up she say, "believe me they are very uncomfortable". but everything i've read says that you can barely feel them if at all. I do alot of sports and i love to swim. Now for my question. How do i get my mom to let me try tampons? And are they really uncomfortable?
Thanks alot!

Hey! In my experience they are not uncomfortable at all. i much prefer them to pads, and once you get the hang of them you can't feel them. Your mom may have had a bad experience learning to use them and just decided to stick with pads. That's an ok choice for her to make, but she can't make it for you.  Try to open a dialogue with her about your feelings. Explain your side to her in a non-whiney, calm manner. Don't interrupt her or get angry even if she interrupts you or gets angry. That's unfair, but since she has all the power, it's in your best interest not to antagonize her. As in, you'll be more likely to get what you want if you are really, super mature. If she still says no, accept her decision gracefully. If she sees that you're not going to throw a fit for not getting your way, she'll be more likely to listen next time you want something. good luck!

im 10 and im confused do u have to have big boobs to have it and do u have to have discharge ??:/

Hey girl! Nope, not necessary at all. Your period can come without any of these warning signs beforehand, or conversely, you could have all the signs and still a while to go before you actually start menstruating. Hope this clears things up! xx

Hannah M

by lilibet112 on 6/3/2013 4:21:05 PM

Hi its me again I forgot! I have been noticing
Yellow white discharge
Lack of sleep
Eating more
More attitude
Lazy ness
hard breathing
stomach aches
and that's about it!

Hey girl! I would see a doctor and talk to them about the issues. Normal signs you're going to start menstruating are discharge and cramps - the other stuff could be signs of other issues. No way to know except to get it checked out. xx

Hannah M

by cheergeek_xo2001 on 6/3/2013 2:41:59 PM

Umm I need to know if these are signs of my period and when I will get it by the looks of these signs.I've had some yellow ish white ish discharge in my underwater and I told my best friend and she has it too but we don't feel comfy telling our parents and I have been ver y dizzy too when I get up from sitting or laying or I will just be standing and I will get dizzy and sometimes fall over also my boobs are getting very sore then usual and I've had hair from armpits to my private to my legs I'm 12 years old and I'm dieing to know when I will get my period.

Hey girl! So unfortunately there is no "when-will-my-period-come" mind-reading or foreseeing I can do for you. The dizziness is troubling - make sure you're drinking enough water, and if you're ever feeling sick or in pain or like something weird is up with your body I would head to the doctor. All of these things sound pretty normal for a girl your age, so just be patient, it'll come soon enough (and then you'll never want it to come again!) xx

by cheergeek_xo2001 on 6/3/2013 1:34:48 PM

okay so i think i just got my period but im not sure because i saw a tiny splotch of red when i wiped but there wasn't anything in my underwear and after a couple wipes i only saw discharge... i don't know

Hey! you may just be spotting, which is a sign that your period's on its way. Wait and see, if the flow increases then it's your period. Another way to get a more professional opinion would be to ask your doctor. good luck!

Hi so i'm just turning twelve tomorrow. My mom didn't get her period until she was fourteen, and is sure I won't either. Lately I've been seriously craving fast food. Like, greasy, salty. Which is weird for me, since I normally HATE junk food. My moods have been kinda changing, a little more than normal. My allergies ahve been acting up, and I've been getting some serious head aches. I've had discharge for about 2 years now. My boobs have been growing for 2, too. Please help!!! I really want to know, especially sicne my mom didn't get hers until 14.
MOD MOD MOD thanks!!

Hey girlie- OK so I cannot tell you when you are getting your period but many of those symptoms sound right!  You should ask your mom to take you to the doc, maybe then you will get a clearer picture of when you will get it.  You mentioned allergies (which have nothing to do with getting your period) so maybe this is just allergy related?  I think you should go to the doc.

I am twelve years old . I turn thirteen in July . My mom did not start her period until she was fourteen . Today I experienced dierreah. It's not normal for me to have it .
My throat is hurting . But , that's it . Is that a sign of my period ? I have had discharge for two years . It started around this time . I have had pubic hair down and up there sense about this time also . I have had light cramps on and off today . I am wearing a panty liner for my discharge . It has a yellowish tent to it . My dads side started early (women ) but could it be it ? I carry around pads in my purse . Any advice ? Please reply soon Smile

Hey girlie, the discharge and pubic hair are both signs of your period. But feeling sick isn't. You might be coming down with some kind of cold or flu. Make sure you're drinking lots of fluids to try to keep yourself healthy and fight this off.

hey! Those are all symptoms, but everyone gets it at different times. It sounds perfectly normal to me, but your doctor is the real authority on stuff like this. Sometimes it's genetic. When did your mom get hers?

Helen S.

Every two weeks for the past 6 weeks I would get a big brown spot of discharge, not poo, in my underwear. Is this normal? What is this?

Hey girlie,

It might be discharge or your period -- I would talk to your mom or a doc for a pro opinion!

MOD MOD MOD........... When I'm on my period i don't feel cranky, I don't get cramps,or any other thing I here people complain about when on there period besides the need for pads. i normally feel calm and relaxed is that normal?

Hey girlie! Well, it's not usually the typical reaction to a period, but I wouldn't question it too much. Any avoiding of cramps and mood swings is a thing to be celebrated!

MOD MOD MOD ... i live with my dad after my mom died my big sis is in collage and am 12 and i feel like my period is so close and i donno how to tell my dad or buy pads with him help me

Hey girlie, if you have any other women in your life like an aunt, grandmother or friend's mom that you're close to, talk to them and they'd be happy to help you out. If not, tell your dad you want to go to the store with him. It could be the grocery store or a store like Wal-Mart or Target. Pick out what you want and put it in the cart. If your dad wants to he'll talk to you about it, but even if he doesn't want to talk, he'll definitely buy them for you.

Hey! yeah those are all symptoms. You're going through puberty right now and it's natural to feel nervous about that. Just remember that your body's changing and that's how it's supposed to be. you can do it girl!

My friend just told me that she got here period she said I trust you but now she wants to know who I like should I tell her

Hey girlie,

Those are totally different topics, and you only have to tell her what you would feel comfortable talking to her about! If you do trust her and want to tell her who you like, you definitely can, but don't feel like you have to just because she told you about her period! She volunteered that info herself, so you're not obligated to tell her anything in return.

For girls who need other symptoms:

mood swings
angry outbursts
confusion or fuzzy thinking
changes in libido
cravings, especially for salty or sweet foods
alcohol intolerance
abdominal and pelvic cramps
weight gain
menstrual migraines
breast swelling and pain
edema (visible swelling, particularly in the hands, feet and legs)
sinus problems
sore throat
worsening of chronic conditions like arthritis and ulcers
difficulty with coordination, being more prone to accidents
dizziness, decreased balance
heart pounding (palpitation)
urinary problems

by mackie70 on 3/22/2013 11:36:21 AM

Well so I have mostly every thing on ur list. I am having very bad sinus issues right now, I am suddenly eating more than normal, my friend asked me a question and I burst into tears and forgot that my class was going to the library. I don't have discharge (at least I don't think that's what I find in my underwear) or acne. My mom got her period when she was my she around the same time I am now. I'm 10 about to turn 11 if that helps. Anyway I was thinking would our periods still be similar even though she is a bigger women and I'm a skinny girl? I mean I'm not like bikini skinny ( although I wear one) I have a little belly but like a centimeter so barely noticeable
I just want to know if I would be maybe getting mine soon? I guess I have two questions!!! Thank you in advance!!!!💗💗💗💗💗😜😜😜😜

You could be getting yours soon, especially if your mom got hers around your age too! She may have been the same size as you when she was your age...her body has just changed! You won't really know until you get it. Try preparing yourself with pads and/or tampons in your locker! Good luck girl!

But I'm really scared about starting my period. Do u have any tips for me? I do keep pads and tampons in my purse and stuff. And I just had a headache. Any tips??

Hey Y'all.
My name is Hannah, and I am 13, almost 14. My middle school days are drawing to a close, and yet I haven't started my period yet. I have all of the signs and symptoms. I have had them for months. I've researched very possible symptom, and I have almost all of them. Moodiness, bloating, cravings, cramping, boob growth, pubic and underarm hair, and stomach problems. I don't know what's wrong with me. All of my friends have started, even my younger friends. I asked my mom and she said she started at the beginning of 8th grade. For me, 8th grade is almost over. Help?!?

Im 3 days late and I'm scared this is my third period I'm 11 btw

Hey! the only way to really feel reassured is to talk to your doctor about all of these questions Smile To be honest, that's what we mods just have to tell you guys when you come to us with any health concerns. You may very well be fine, but since we're not doctors and we can't even see you face to face, it's not for us to tell you what's fine and what isn't. You know your body. Trust your instincts and talk to your doc!

my friend got her period at around 10 and she is now 13.
she period must be irreagular because sometimes she would miss a month in between. she told ber mom the other day that she didnt her her period yet and it has been a month. her mom ended up putting her on like a birth control pill!!! as her best frind i find this stupid. wont taking a birth control pill at such and early age cause ur body to be even more irreagular. i told her to research some stuff and show her mom but her mom didnt listen.her mom is even making her tell her stepdad about all of this which i find very inapporiate. do you have any advice? PS. she finally got her stuff yesterday

Hey girlie,

There might be more to the story than you can tell--some people take birth control to help regulate their period, so if your friend's doc prescribed it to her, I would trust their judgment and that there might be more than what you know. What medicine your friend takes is between her and her doc!

Does that mean I will get my period soon, my family members all think I am, and even though I do too Im not willing except it and i just wanna know if it sounds like im gonna get it. Please answer ASAP

Hey hottie1250, mhmm it may be on it's way. This could be your body's way of telling you to get ready. Hope this helps! Xoxo Smile

hi my name is Ghalya I'm 12 and in a few months ill be 13 i am really concerned that I will never get my period but:
I am on a training bra and my boobs are sticking out
I have armpit hair and hair down their too
I am 49-50 kilos and my weight is always shifting
I have occasional cramps
I have occasional headaches
I always crave food

Hey girlie! I know this can be super stressful, but it's difficult to predict when your period will come. It's different for everyone. If you're already showing signs of puberty, though, it's probably not far off. I would try talking to your mom and asking her when she got her period; age of puberty is often similar among family members. Hope this helps!

I have all of the following stuff listed but yet I still dont have my period Frown it really upsets me when I see all my friends getting theres and I'm all left out ! I have had discharge ever since the beginning of 6th grade and now I'm about to be in the 8th grade.I havent talked to my mom about it because my mom is not really the understanding type, so I kinda feel like im on my own with this whole thing and I could really use some pointers with this whole thing so that I am not completely alone.

I just hit my first period 3-4 days ago. It's getting bad even though its my first. Is it normal to be this way?

Hey chica, every girl experiences her period a little differently.  Talk with your mom or a nurse if you're worried something might be wrong.  You might find this post helpful: "Your guide to PMS and how to handle it."

MODMODMODMODMOD My periods are irregular sometimes, but It's two days late, and I'm freaking out. Is it possible that I'm pregnant? I also do track so all week long I've been running and weightlifting, I didn't know if that was a factor or not.

Hey girl, it is VERY unlikely that you are pregnant due to that mishap. Periods are just late sometimes. They don't always fall on the exact same day, especially if you are active. Now if 2-3 weeks go by and you don't have it, I would talk to your gyno. But I'm sure you're fine.

I'm 11. I haven't had my first period yet!! I'm scared it will start soon. I started getting discharge in 5th grade and starting wearing bras in the middle of 5th. now being in 6th, I notice I am getting some of the signs. Maybe a month or so ago I stsrted having painfully cramps. I told my mom and she said to wait a little while to see if I start. I have waited but nothing has happened. I eat a lot more now ( idk if that is craving) and gaining wait very easy. I am not over wait, but I am afraid that if this is a sign of my period i might get stuck with eating to much. my sister started a month ago, but she gets kinda annoyed when I ask her questions . I am really shy around my teachers , so if I start my period there I would be to scared to tell someone. what are some ways I can be prepared?

by PurpleRain08 on 3/2/2013 10:11:27 AM

I've been feeling all signs of PMS. I really don't feel well, and I've never had my period before. I want to have my mom there for me in case I get it, but she's leaving on Saturday for work, and won't be back for a month! My dad wouldn't know what to do, and I have no idea what to do if I get my period without my mom around. Can you help me?

Hey girlie,

It will be a little awkward to talk to your dad, but he'll still be able to help you because that is his job as a parent! So if it does happen, just tell him as soon as it does, and he'll be happy to buy you pads and whatever else you need.

Ok this is awkward but here goes. I am 11. I am always self conscience about myself. I am 5'7" and weigh 104 pounds. I can never be positive about myself. The worst of all, I started puberty. I am getting boobs and Mom won't let me get cups even though my boobs stick out of them. I got my period in November and then again on December but it is now February and I haven't seen it. I am very worried. I am scared that it won't come back since it been a while. I just feel out of the ordinary since kids pick on me and I got called the grossest girl in school because I started all this. Please help me! ASAP

MOD! Help me!!

Hey girlie, if you say you're not sexually active, then you don't have any chance of being pregnant. It's only been two months and a lot of girls don't have a regular period in the beginning.  Just try to de-stress and hopefully your period will come soon.

chelsea_99- Hey just want to let you know since Mods are busy. It is normal to be irregular for the first few years. My mom wasn't regular until after I was born, so don't worry that is completely normal. Smile One month you could have it.. then two weeks later again.. then 3 months later. Your body takes a while to get used to these change. Smile

I have had my period for just over 2 years, my period was due 2 and a half weeks ago and i am late, I have not be sexually active at all! I am just really worried,a few days after my period was due I had cramps and a few other symptoms so i assumed it was coming but it didn't. I also know that this might be because of stress and i just started school three weeks ago and i have been pretty stressed due to school, is that what may be delaying my period, i have had dishcharge over this time. Is this normal ? Thankyou ! xo

Umm well let's see.. I never get ANY symptoms, and I'm almost 15 and I just got my period, a couple weeks ago). i never get cramps, or moods wings, or any of the symptoms everyone else talks about. Could it have something to do with that I do gymnastics? I usually train up to 6 hours a week, and I condition (like push-ups, sit ups, etc) everyday. I'm kinda confused, and I never got a "heavy flow" i think, there were 2 days in my period where it stopped randomly, then it came back. I also have had a VERY decreased appetite, so I just want to know if gymnastics has something to do with this.

Hey girlie,

That sounds normal for your first period, and I don't think your period would have anything to do with your appetite, but I'm not a professional so I would talk to your mom or a doc for an expert opinion!

by Maddie12001 on 1/30/2013 1:36:33 AM

So for the past two weeks, I have been feeling tired, getting cramps, and having trouble sleeping. I also have had stomach aches and head aches too. I started to think my period was coming, but I didn't know for sure. Anyways, today, from the time I woke up to now, I have been VERY tired (even though I got 10 hours of sleep.) and have been on an "emotional rollarcoaster" and I have midterms this week. I haven't gotten my period yet so I don't really know the exact signs. I also went to the doctors, since my mom thought maybe I was just getting sick. I wasn't sick (thankfully) but I still don't know... Am I going to get my period soon, and how do I handle it?

I think it might be your period soon. Either that or normal growing pains and puberty changes. However if you get your period just make sure you're stocked with pads and tampons! If you have the right materials at all times there's no need to be scared Smile good luck! xoxo kerra

Hey there. I'm almost 12 and I haven't had my period yet. All of my friends have. My sister had it when she was 12 as well. Should I be worried?

by ilovecookie1 on 1/18/2013 4:50:35 PM

Okay I'm a little freaked out about this and I didn't know what I should do. Well I'm 14 and in less than a week ill be 15. Anyways I have never had a period. a couple months back this white stuff started to come out of me and I'd have to wash underwear so many times because if this. Well today these awful pains were going on in my stomach. I actually had to stop myself for a minute until they passed on. Anyways after u got home from my basketball game I took a hot bath to help ease my stomach pains and this dark reddish brown stringy discharge like fluid was hanging out of that area so u got out and took toilet paper to just pull it out. I asked my mom and she said that I was probably getting my period and that it was just a blood clot. But after about 4 or 5 hours nothing else has came out. Should I be worried or is this just my period starting? Please please help.

by annie1234 on 1/15/2013 10:52:48 PM

I'm 16 I am sexually active . My period is almost two weeks late and my breasts are feeling tender and my face is breaking out. I am physically active running and playing basketball about two hours everyday. Can you tell me why I'm late?

Mod mod mod mod.
So I'm 14 years old and I've been having my period since I was 12. Lately when I'm not on my period there's this clear gel that I thing is coming out of my vagina. What is it?? And am I in trouble?? I have to wear a panti liner even when I'm not on my period.

Hey Girl, occasionally a girl's period will be irregular. Especially at your age, its normal and could occur because of a change in diet, exercise, or growing. However, if it continues you might want to see a doctor. The clear stuff is discharge that you should be getting.

Hey girl,

That could be a sign of getting your period, but I'm not sure. If you want to know more about your bod and when your period might be coming, you could talk to your doctor, but it's different for everyone, and it will come when your body is ready! In the meantime, I would keep a pad in your backpack or your locker in case you get it when you are at school.

if your mom thinks its your period, she's probably right. Even if its just discharege, if its that heavy you might want to wear a pad anyway.

I have dark leg hair, sorta and I am developing armpit hair. I am a little past breast buds. I've been having like discomfort in my back. I have been craving lots of junk food. Also today when i was in the car my stomach hurt for only like barely even a minute. And I'm currently in the process of puberty, I can tell because I am a lot more mature then some of my friends. Can you help me please and maybe give me an estimate time of when it is coming, because I wanna be prepared as much as possible. Please Help

I am 13 and I haven't gotten my period yet and it makes me kinda feel bad about myself because all of my friends have theirs and they don't "make fun of me for it" but I feel kinda left out because I don't have it. Another thing is I have been having very slight cramps but I don't know if it is for my period or if it is just after I eat. I'm so confused and nervous about if I get it in school...... please help

Hey girl,

If your friends are making fun of you, that's not cool at all, because it's not something you can control and it's different for everyone! Your period will come when your bod is ready. Having cramps after eating might just be being bloated after eating. You can't really know when your period is coming, so just keep a pad in your locker or backpack in case you get it at school. Don't worry! Smile

Also sometimes i'll get weird funny sharp pains down there,
is that a sign my periods coming?
And I hear girls say "I Have Cramps" What does that mean?
Thanks Reply Soon!!

Hey Girl, you never know when Aunt Flo is coming, and girls can get their periods as early as 10 or as late as 16 depending on their genes, body type, and physical activity. Girls sometimes  get cramps before their period, which is different for each girl. They usually experience slight pain or discomfort in their lower abs or back.

Please answer!
Last night I looked in my undies and saw brown stuff. I ignored it, changed underwear, and went to bed. This morning that brown stuff is there again! Is this my period?? I havn't experienced any cramps, but last night I was really hot Nd mood swingy.

Hey girl,

It's possible. Just keep track! Not everyone experiences cramps, so don't let that lead you to believe that it's not your period.

OK, so I just started my period, and I'm eleven. The odd thing is, my sister (half, we have diff dads) started at 15 and so did my mom. Thats not the thing though. I REALLY don't want to use tampons. Oh, and how do i bathe or shower? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3

Hey girlie, sometimes there are just differences in hormones. Your mom is a good predictor but not exact. Taking a bath or shower will be fine. You won't show noticeable amount of blood during that time so you'll be safe!

Ok so hi I'm kyky I'm 12 years old and I've had all the signs of PMS and I have hair Down there and underarm hair for a long time. My breasts started developing almost 2 years now. I've been getting cramps, head aches, diarrhea, and I've had vaginal discharge for as ling as I can remember I think about 6 months. My mom started when she was 13 and my older sister started when she was 12. Am I about to start my period soon? I already had a growth spurt of 5 inches this year and I gained like 15 pounds I'm 98 pounds.

hey! those are all signs that you may start your period soon, but nothing is for sure. Just be patient with your body, it'll probably happen when you least expect it. check this out:

I'm 14 years old and I don't have my period yet. But I've had signs of it for a year and a half. I weigh 85 pounds and I hear you need to be 110lbs to actually get your period. Problem is I only gain 5 pounds a year (no matter how hard I try to gain weight. Is something wrong with me? I would have thought I'd have my period by now.

Hey! the only way to really feel reassured is to talk to your doctor about all of these questions Smile To be honest, that's what we mods just have to tell you guys when you come to us with any health concerns. You may very well be fine, but since we're not doctors and we can't even see you face to face, it's not for us to tell you what's fine and what isn't. You know your body. Okay, I have had trouble with my period for about two months now...There was a time when I was on it for over 3 weeks and it was extremely heavy..that was about two weeks ago.I became anemic and I am taking vitamins and doing everything in my power to get it under control and I have already seen a doctor about my periods and she put me on birth control...which seemed to be working but once again I am on my period! But this time it is really light and it seems like instead of just blood, I might have skin coming with...I am really concerned and I don't know what it could be! I know this can not be normal so I am just wondering what could possibly be wrong with me..?

Hey girl,

It sounds like it might be blood clots, but I would talk to your doctor about your medication's effects on you to see what the doc thinks.

Hi i'm 12 1/2 and i'm supposed to get my first period between now and about 6 months. I was wondering if gaining wieght in your stomache area is normal? For a while now im been getting more belly fat. Its been making me really self concouis about myself. I only wear baggy shirts because of this, and now my closet is shrinking. I know it might just be more noticeable to me but ive been really starting to worry about it. I am very athletic. I play on 3 sports teams all year round except for winter (when i play 2) and i work out at a gym 2 times a week, i eat pretty healthy, and last time i saw my doctor she said i was at a healthy wieght. Knowing all that i kinda just wanted to hear from someone that its normal. And if it is when it will go away? Thanks! Sorry its long!

Hey girl, sometimes we can be our worst critics when it comes to our bods. Your bod is changing a lot so don't sweat any baby fat during the transition. Instead, keep doing what you're doing: exercising and eating healthy. You'll look your best inside and out with it. Your bod won't always look like it did before (which was that of a little girl's) but you've got some good habits worth keeping to keep it in its best shape.

so i first started my period in july, and i got another in august, but i've missed 3 moths. i've been told that it's normal to be irregular and miss a few when you 1st start it, but missing 3? that seems like a lot! i'm wondering if this is linked to anything (besides prenancey, because i KNOW i'm not). also, why does the irregularity happen?

Hey soccacheer, periods can be crazy. Irregular periods happen because your body is already changing as a teenager. It usually becomes regular three years after the first cycle. Some women have irregular periods because their bodies produce a lot of androgen, which is a hormone. This hormone causes hair growth on the chin and chest, increased muscle mass and sometimes weight gain. No worries girl, you're good to go. Hope this helps! Xoxo

Hi I am 11 my birthday was in late August I got my period in early September is that weird at all? I am in fifth grade but I got held back so I should be in sixth grade. I told 5 people about it and none of them got theirs and anyone else that I know of. I know everyone gets it at different times but I feel alone like if I have any questions I can only ask my mom but that feels strange to me. My mom got hers at 9 so I guess it is about the time I am supposed to get it. Any advice. Also I was in the bathroom(I carry a bag with stuff that I need in it.) and when I came out the mean/popular kids were in there and were like did you change I said no then they looked at me weird. By the way my homeroom teacher, gym teacher, and nurse knows. What to do???

Here lately, when I start my period, the bladder area cramps up SO bad. Last month, I had to go to the nurse's office because the cramps were that painful. What can I do to fix the problem. Please help!!!!!

Hey wesdelwarrior, one word: medicine. Ask your parents to get you some pain killers or call your doctor for recommendations. Also staying away from greasy foods on your period will help. Instead munch on fruits and veggies and drink water. Even laying on your side with your knees tucked in your chest will help. Finally try placing a hot compress like rag or heating pad on your stomach to reduce the cramps. Hope this helps! Xoxo

Hey girl, totally! It's hard to say when your period will come (no one can predict the exact time for everyone) but people get it at different ages. Just take care of yourself and it should come soon enough (and in the meantime, enjoy not having it. Periods are not the most fun!)

MOD MOD MOD!!!!!!!!!
Okay so I'm suspecting my first period is coming soon so I'm very nervous. I'm turning 14 in 4 months. I'm the only one of my friends who hasn't gotten their period yet. I have been getting discharge for 2-3 years now. My mom got her first one when she was 13. My doctor thinks I should be getting it soon too. I have had really bad cramps at random days all this month. Usually on like Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. I need your advice on what to do when I get my first one? What of it's in school? What if I have a male teacher? (most of my teachers are) How do I tell my mom? What can I do to prepare? I'm super nervous so please help me! Thanks!!

Hey KMBSmiles, don't worry about telling your mom. She's the best person to help you. If you get it in class, ask to go to the bathroom, and when you have it, get your mother to write a note to all your teachers letting them know you won't be feeling well for the next few days and will need to go to the bathroom. No worries you're not their first female student to get their period in school. Just be sure to have pads in your purse or backpack, some medicine in case you get sick, an extra pair of bottoms, and some feminine wipes. You'll be fine chica. If you have anymore questions let me know. Hope this helps! Xoxo

Hey girl,

It's normal for your period to be irregular at first, so there's probably nothing to worry about, though you can talk to your mom or a doc to be sure. As for the pads, it won't be too awkward--your mom is a girl too and will understand that you need them!

Hey girl, this isnt exactly your period, it's more like a mini period that's gearing up to be the real thing. This is totally normal. You'll probably get a full blown period at any time now so be prepared. Stick a couple of pads in your backpack, purse and locker. And congrats, girly.

Lauren I.

by olivia19 on 10/19/2012 4:09:36 PM

Every month for three months I've been getting cramps and spotting. I've asked other mods, and they all think my period will be coming very soon. Anyway, so I already had my mini-period this month, but it only lasted 2 days, unlike the two months before when the spotting lasted 4-5 days. The spotting this month happened on the fourth and fifth. It was kind of weird to me that it only lasted two days, but I was just like whatever. Then today I went to the bathroom at school and I had a lot of spotting on my underwear. They were all really little, but there were a lot. Then, I went to the bathroom after school (4 hours later) and there was more! This is probably the most spotting I've gotten so far. Is my period on it's way? Please help. I'm sick and tired of waiting for my period. My period is so dramatic.

Hey girl, your period does seem pretty dramatic haha and it's having a little bit of trouble deciding when's the right time to make a visit. But this is totally, completely normal. When you first start getting your period, it could be heavy or really light, come at random days, come and go and be a brownish or red in color. This is all normal. Eventually your period will make up its mind and become a heavier, more regular period. In the meantime, you might want to wear panty liners to save your underwear from some of that drama. Panty liners are just like really thin pads. You should also keep regular pads on you just in case. Stash a couple in your purse, backpack and locker. It's always good to be prepared! There's nothing we can do to hurry your period along, but while your waiting just remember that your totally normal and theres nothing wrong going on down there. If your still nervous, don't be afraid to ask mom, she's been through it before. A doctor can also help and they are there to listen.  Good luck!

How do i use a heating pad? Thanks

Hey girl, it depends on what you have. Some heating pads come in packets and when you open them up, you sort of have to move it around and massage it to get the heat to work. Some are sort of like stickers that you peel off and place on the part you want to heat up. There are also electric heating pads that need to be plugged in. Read the directions on whichever one you have.

My doctor says it might be because I'm so athletic. But I've been really stressed and moody lately. Also, I've started to break out more, but I don't know if it's because I started running more. Am I getting my period anytime soon?

Hey kat_147, you may be getting your period. Emotions like stress and anxiety begin to take affects on our bodies. All your stressing could be causing the acne. So try to relax and calm down. Deep breathing exercises may help you. Even taking more naps might work. Hope this helps! Xoxo

I am 5'2", i weigh around 110-115, im thirteen about to turn fourteen in a month, i have hair up to my belly button that i have to shave, i wear a size 34 C or 32 D bra, and i have had discharge for 20 months...where the heck is my period?! I know there is no way to tell but i heard if u dont have it after 18+ months of discharge that something is me!!

Hey girlie, I think it's unlikely that there's something wrong. You're still young and some girls don't get their periods until they turn 15 or 16. If it's something that you're really concerned about, you might want to consider seeing a doctor.

okay so today and yesterday I've had pretty heavy discharge and it was like I could feel it coming, something happening "down there". I haven't had any cramps or anything,no bad acne and im usually clear anyways and I haven't gotten my period yet. Could this mean that I'm going to get my period soon? Also can you guys write more articles on periods, please? Thanks in advance!Smile

Hey girly, it's very possible that that's a sign of your period coming. Feel free to talk to your mom, sister, aunt, or grandma about the subject. Docs can be really helpful too. And I promise we'll have more period articles in the future! =) xoxox

I just came out of the bathroom and I think I started my period. It's just that it's a week early and there's this weird brown discharge. I've had it for 5 years so far and I've never seen that color discharge. Is it normal?

Hey coolchick110, unfortunately periods can become irregular and do weird things to your body. So maybe your flow just came early this time. If anything else weird happens, then I would call the doctor. Hope this helps! Xoxo

I am 13 years old and this might sound weird but I really need your help! Ok so I have stretch marks on my boobs and butt.. and there REALLY embarrassing I mean no one is gona see them but still I DONT like them there. I was just wondering if there was anything that I could do to get them off. I really don't want to have a cream but if it has to come down to that bc there is nothing else to do them I guess I will have to! But I don't understand why there their bc my boobs/butt isn't HUGE there probably normal size.
Please Help! xoxo

Hey kpriest, mhmm it could be a hereditary thing. There are some creams that are supposed to help reduce the look of them. Head to the medical aisles in Rite-Aid, CVS, Target and Wal-Mart. Hope that helps! Xoxo

At the beginning of the month, I had five days of spotting and cramps. The thing about that is I'm not sure if that was my first period, because I'm not sure how much blood is considered your period? Then, this month, I got one day of light brown discharge which has never happened to me before. After the discharge, I had like one spot of blood the next day. My question is: was this my period? Also, if it wasn't my period, does brown discharge mean its coming? Thanks soooo much... I'm just really confused....

Hey purple10015, I think it's best you contact your doctor. I don't think it's anything serious, but just to be on the safe side. They will definitely be able to tell you whats going on in your body. Hope ya feel better. Xoxo

I'm about to turn 14, and starting August 2nd I got spotting and cramps for 5 days. So then, on August 31st I got brown discharge, which has never happened to me before... Then on September 1, I got a spot of what looked like brown discharge mixed with a little bit of blood. It was just a little spot. Nothing has happened today... Yet. Well, I'm wondering, how much blood is considered your period? And was this my period? I'm a 34-36 A. I weigh about 100 lbs. I have armpit and pubic hair. I feel like maybe it was my period, but I just don't know. I am so confused. I am breaking out again (like I did earlier this month), my breasts are so sore, and I'm don't know what to do.... PLEASE HELP ME ASAP, and let me know what you think. THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH! MODS R LIFESAVERS!

Hey purple10115, mhmm I'm not really sure. It is weird that you are only getting one day of these symptoms. I would contact your doctor to schedule an appointment to get checked out. It's probably nothing serious but just to be on the safe side. Hope ya feel better! Xoxo

I should be getting my period soon, I have all the signs of it coming, and my sister got hers when she was about my age, so I want to ask my mom for pads to keep at school just in case I get it at school. The problem is, I always get SO embarassed asking and end up asking about our schedule for today. Here are some questions:

How do I get that last minute courage?

Should I ask for liners, too to wear everyday?

So I talked to my doctor last week and she said I could get my period any time now, and now all of these things are happening to me X1000, it's like, i just don't know what do do with myself! When I'm on the computer I start crying because i feel lonely, when i go out with my chickens they start squawking (which makes my head hurt more) When i read a book I get sort of bored and I'm too nauseous , when i play with my cats or dogs i get hives (I'm allergic to both of them and I have bad Asthma) And lastly, I feel to headachey/lazy to play on my wii! What do you normally do when this happens?

Hey girl,

It sounds like you are nervous or stressed, either about your period or school or personal life. Either way, that's 100% normal and part of growing up! If you feel lonely, try calling a friend or talking to one of your family members. And if you're bored with your Wii, try playing outside! And as for the headaches and asthma, you should talk to your parents about seeing a doctor for professional medical advice. Everything will be ok, so relax and enjoy your life!!

MODmODMODMODI have been gatting cramps, headaches as well as being mad at the world to just crying t random. I have had discharge for about two years now and I do have boobs and hair but I haven't gotten my period. Please tell me it coming!

Hey girlie,

I wish we could guarantee it's on its way, but we can't! You're showing lots of signs that puberty is progressing normally - which is awesome, because it means you're healthy and right on track. Even doctors can't predict exactly when you'll get your period though, so you just gotta be patient <3 I know it's tough, but read up on all our period advice to get super prepared. It'll come when your bod is ready! <3

by talitha on 8/30/2012 5:37:07 PM

Hey girlie,

It's totally possible for your period to come right now, but we can't guarantee that it will. Every girl gets her period at a different time during puberty - some will have discharge for only a month, others for 2+ years before their first period comes. Same with your boobs - some girls are more fully developed when their period comes, while others still have lots of growing/changing left to do. I wish we could predict when you'll get your period, but even a doctor can't predict it! In the meantime, read up on periods so you're totally prepared when yours comes. And try to be patient! Discharge and breast growth are great signs that you're healthy and going through puberty normally - everything will happen when your bod is ready <3333

So now that i know i did break it should i tell my mom? What should i tell her? Thanks

Hey girlie! You can mention it to your mom, but it isn't too big of a deal.  There's no reason why you'll need to tell her (nothing health wise changes after you break your hymen), but if you want to tell her because if feels like a big deal to you, tell her what happened yesterday and ask her if that's what she thinks happened. xoxo

I find it really embarrassing when I ask to go to the loo in class and pull out my period bag out. Everyone looks at me and instantly knows what is going on its soo embarrassing is there something else I could put my pads/tampons In ?!

Hey girlie! Unless you can sneak a pad or tampon into your pocket before class starts, that's really the least embarrassing it can get! xoxo

Also, my stomach is hurting. i dont think its cramps but it might be. It sometimes feels like Im going to throw up. Do you have any suggestions on something I could do to treat my upset stomach?

Hey girl! Try some ginger ale to make your stomach feel better and some crackers.  It's normal to have heavier periods sometimes and feel worse than usual.  Stick in there and you'll feel better soon! xoxo

Tomorrow is my first day as a freshman...and mother nature decided that it was my lucky week! Frown since tomorrow is the first day, we start by going to home room for like 2 hours to get our sceduel and locker number. then we go to all of our regular classes 1-7. Do since I'm on my period, when do you think would be the best time to change my tampon? I was thinking that lunch would probably be the bet time, but idk when I have lunch, like I know that I have 1 of the 3 lunches, but the 3 run from 11-12. So when would be the est time to change my tampon? And how to I prevent leaks?
Thanks mod!!! Smile have a great day!

Hey girlie,

First off, you should wear a pantyliner on the first day with your tampon just in case - it'll protect your undies against leaks so there aren't any major panic moments! Next, on my heaviest days I usually have to change my tampon about every 3 hours. But you might have a heavier or lighter flow, so you kinda have to listen to your body and check it often so you get into a routine. Based on your schedule, try to go about that often (every 3 hours) so there aren't any surprises and you'll be just fine! Smile

Hey chica! I'm sure your dad knows what tampons are and would be happy to get them for you! You should try and talk to him and ask him to get them for you cause you're going to need to talk to him about this eventually, but if you're not sure you're ready to talk to him leave a grocery list or note by his bed, on the refrigerator, or somewhere you know he'll see! xoxo

Please help! i get these like fake periods where i get cramps and nausea and diarrhea and headaches and more discharge than usual, just like when i actually get my period (ive had my period 3/4 times)(btw is it normal to have all those things going on?), but it dosen't come!!the PMS stuff goes on for about a week, then just stops.this is when i would get my period and while i have it i get some symptoms but not much. But sometimes PMS then nothing!i asked my mom and she says that sometimes her ovulation hurts like pms too, and that could be it but ive never heard that before. Please Help!!!! also ive gotten periods w/ a week(or more) of warning, and ive gotten ones that its just suddenly there with me having no idea i was about to get this a normal thing?
thanks in advance!!!!

Hey chica! Not knowing when your period is coming sometimes and then knowing other times is completely normal, just not so fun. It's also normal for you not to get your period on a regular basis yet. As for the rest of it I would definitely talk to your mom more and express your concern! Maybe seeing the doctor would be a good idea! Going to the doctor and talking to them about this can help you understand what's going on with your body and how to control it/stop it. Here's an article that address pms and ways to help it! ! xoxo

But now my dad just called and he said its impossible to come home before 10pm so i dont think that the toilet paper will work, because my period just got heavier, so i tried using tampons again. I can get the applicator in just fine but everytime i push the actuall tampon in i feel light-headed and dizzy. What else can i do to make it go in easier? Thanks Smile

Hey girl, sorry the tampon didn't work out for you! Definitely try again later today or tomorrow after you gave yourself a break! All those aches can be due to your period. You can try eating a banana and using a heating pad to ease those muscles,

here are some more tips:

In it kind of hurts. Oh and my dad and i just moved in here to be closer to a highschool (my old house didnt have a highschool close to it) so i dont know anyone so i cant borrow a pad. Do u know why it might be hurting?

Hey girly! Sorry to hear about all the tampon trouble! Tampons can be tricky and take some getting used to. If it hurts, you might not have the right angle. Try reading this article:

If you’re at your wits end with tampons, stuff some paper towels in your undies and wait for dad to get home with some pads. They are much easier! Try a nice hot shower to pass the time. The hot water will help with cramps and distressing and you won’t have to worry about blood in the shower!

I searched up dirrections on google, and i tried like 3 times, but i cant get the tampon in all the way. It hurts when it get it halfway there. Do u have any tips? Thanks

Hey girlie! You have to relax and push through the discomfort.  Putting a tampon in the first time is pretty uncomfortable, so you might just have to push through it.  I know relaxing is silly advice for the awkwardness of putting in a tampon, I know, but when you are tense, it makes it hard to go in.  Make sure you have the skinniest tampon you can find.  Do you have neighbors your age you know really well or a friend who lives within walking distance?  If so, see if they can lend you a pad or pantyliner.  xoxo

I think i just had my first period.....
I woke up this morning and there was blood all over my underwear. (does that sound like my period?) I was going to put a pad on but all we have in the house is tampons ( they were my sisters before she moved out) and i was never taught to use them or taught about my period because my mom died after i was born. How do u get a tampon in? And my dads at work and ive already tried getting the stain out, but its not coming out, what halpens if my dad figures out, what do i tell him? Thanks Smile

Hey girl! I'm sorry you have to go through your first period without your mom around, that must be really hard for you.  Your dad knew this was going to come eventually, and depending on how old your sister was when your mom died, he might have already gone through it.  Call your dad and tell him you're going to need him to pick up pads and panty liners on the way home from work.  Ask nicely, he might be embarrassed, but I'm sure he'll do it anyway.  Then, look in the tampon box, there are usually instructions. If not, there are instructions online (be careful when you search, look for instructions on the website of the tampon company).  Call your sister, she might be able to help you out to and give you some moral advice.  If you're worried, talk to an aunt, grandmother, or a friend's mom who you are close with. xoxo

Is a 11- day period normal? And how do i tell my dad? Thanks Smile

Hey chica! Periods can be that long, but it's pretty unusual.  Tell your dad that you need to talk to your mom about something and call her.  Tell him "it's a girl thing" and he'll understand.  Explain the situation to your mom, and she'll know whether you should call a doc or not.  If so, explain you need to go to the doctor to your dad, and I'm sure he'll get you where you need to go. xoxo

I'm about to turn 14 and I think I got my period but I'm not sure. At the very beginning of August I had spotting and cramps for 5 days. The spotting started heavy (like lots of little smears and dots) then got lighter(only one or two dots). The thing is, I've heard periods are sometimes very light for the first time (like just a few spots of blood). This was the first time I ever spotted or cramped. If this was my period then I'm supposed to get it again at the end of the month... And that's the first or second day of school! What do I do? I'm not sure if the blood was enough to be a period. I don't know if this matters, but the blood was all bright red. PLEASE HELP ME ASAP. Thanks! Also, my Mom said it wasn't my period but lots of people r saying it is??

are there any pads that are anti fresh/senceted?

Hey girl! Check out the drugstore for scented pads.  Try wearing a panty liner instead of a pad- it's smaller, so you can wear it regularly.  As long as you are changing your underwear, though, you don't need to wear a pad. xoxo

Hey girl! Bring a pad to school so you don't have to worry about the drama of a tampon during your first period.  If you think you might get it super soon, wear a panty liner to school, it's small enough to be comfortable but also will keep you fro getting blood on your clothes! xoxo

Hey girl, it's totally normal for your 2nd period to be late. Periods can be irregular for the first 2 years after you start, and since yours is just getting going, it's especially likely that you'll be a little off-schedule. No worries! Smile

Hey, I have a question...
So my periods are irregular, and I know I need to tell someone about it. I have been getting them twice a month since January, but they have been irregular since I started last summer. I don't know who to tell, I'm not that into talking with my mom about it and I can't just tell her I need to go to the doctor because then she would know that something was up. I have to get a physical for my parents insurance before october, should I just tell my doctor then? But how do I bring it up? I cryed about it last night, I'm concittering calling my friend tonight and ask her what I should do. She is a really good frien of mine and the only person I have told about my problem. I think if I tell her, maybe she could help me talk to someone about it...but what do you think? Also why are my periods so out of wack? Do you think it's a hormone imbalance, or something else? Thank you do much! Smile

Hey girl! Periods are out of whack for the first year or two of your period, anyway, but if you are really concerned, then you can wait until your physical to talk to your doc.  Yes, it'll be annoying to wait, but I don't think anything is REALLY wrong with you.  A lot of girls get spotting (like a lighter period) about halfway between their periods, so if one of your periods is SUPER light, that might be it.  Don't panic- stress messes with your hormones and that can affect your period, too.  Just tell your doc that your periods have been strange and you're getting them more frequently- they'll know the right questions to ask.  xoxo

I posted something earlier and i took your advise to talk to my mom about stuff i had in my undies. i had no idea how to explain it so i showed her my undies which was really awkward. My mom has been always easy to talk to and understands when im nervous to ask her something but i asked her what it was and she came up with some excuse saying the greenish brown spots were mold and the red dots were juice. Then she threw it away and ended the conversation. I dont know if she just wasnt prepared to talk about it with me or doesnt want to admit the fact that her little girl is growing up. But i was nervous because another time i had blood in my undies and it was from a wedgie when jumping on my bed. So i was nervous it was gonna be something stupid but now im scared because i dont know if i had my first period or not! Sorry this is long!
Thank you!

hey! well if the spotting continues then you may be starting and you should ask your mom to buy you some pads.

I am 13 years old and I haven't had my period yet but I have been getting discharge in my underwear for 2 and a half YEARS, but I heard that girls get their period 6-12 months after getting discharge. Is that true? I think I might start my period soon though because besides the discharge thing I have pretty developed breasts, alot of pubic hair, and I had a HUGE growth spurt! Based on that, when do you think I will have my period? Please help!

hey! You do have the symptoms, but everyone's different, so it's impossible to say when it will happen

Mod! Mod!Mod!
I got my first period about 4 weeks ago and my second today. (I'm eleven) So I asked my mom if I ccouldtry a tampon. She saidyes so we went to Walmart and got the super skinny ones. When I got home my mom showed me how to put them in so I did. But one it got to a certain point in my vagina it would stop and if I would try to put it in more cause it wasnt in all the way it would hurt and not go in. She said that I have a tiny piece of skin up there and it breaks when I have sex but how do I break it to put a tampon in?

Hey girl! Just try a little harder to put the tampon it.  It might hurt for a few minutes (any more and you should take it out).  If you don't want to try that, you might want to stick to pads and panty liners for now.  xoxo

by m2addyoliver on 8/6/2012 1:17:13 PM

You could put them in your pants right at the top and have half of it sticking. Then put your shorts over it.

Hey girl!

I'm not a doctor so I can't be sure if this is your period or not. It totally could be, but there's also a chance it might not be. I think you should just talk to your mom about it and if you'd like to go see a doctor about it you can.

I usually don't have any room in my bookbag for pads. After a pad bad experience (it fell out of my bag right in front of my crush and I tried to play dumb... it didn't work) I have settled on tampons. Anyways, any suggestons on where to 'hide' them?

I got my first period almost four weeks ago.(I'm eleven) So if I get my next one on time I should get it in five days. The past two days I've been getting this white sticky discharge (I know this sounds wierd but) that you can rub between your fingers is that normal?
Please answer.

I'm 13, and I think my period is almost here, but im not sure… On Thursday, I got my first ever period cramps. I have all that puberty stuff, so I knew my period was going to be heee soon, BUT, no period on Thursday. on Friday I was babysitting when i went to the bathroom and found a teeny tiny red dot on my undies. there was nothing when I wiped. But i forgot about it cuz i thiught it was just thread or lint. Then on Saturday night I went to the bathroom and found about 3-6 little red dots and some red smears but they were all little. I also got cramps that night. But nothing happened today! No period, or anythung else. Just a whole bunch of discharge, but Ive been getting SOOOO much discharfe lately. My boibs have been sore. Is that normal? Like i am going thru a period cycle with no period? Or could I get it in the next few days because those are pMS symptoms? Please reply ASAP. Thanks!

Hey girlie,

Those are definitely signs that your period could be on its way - cramps and spotting for up to a week before your actual period are totally common! But unfortunately, it's impossible for anyone to predict exactly when your period will be here Frown Hang in there and, in the meantime, read all about your period so you know what to expect: I know it's so annoying to be stuck in the "in-between" - thinking you're gonna get your period but not having it yet. But it'll come when your bod is ready! <3

Hey LOLGirl109, yep while discharge is annoying it is normal. You could always wear a pantyliner, which is like a really really small and thin pad that goes in your underwear. It keeps the discharge from staining your underwear. You can find them for cheap at CVS, Rite-Aid, Target, Wal-Mart or any grocery store. Hope this helps! Xoxo

I'm kinda embarrest to ask my mom because in December I thought I got my period but it was actually discharge. But my discharge has been in my underwear for more more than 6 months! And also, Is it normal not to see discharge when I wipe, but only in my underwear? Lynae P.

My friend is having her pool birthday party tomorrow and I have my period. So I got some tampons, this is my first time buying them. When I went to put them on I did it the wrong way and couldn't do It. But when I tried to the right way I was nervous and could, plus my vagina is a bit from trying to put in the applicator. We got Tampax compact so I don't know how to get one that is any smaller. I am worried and afraid I might have to not go to the party even though I already RSVP d. Should I try again? I'm confused how.

Hey girl,

It's normal to have trouble with tampons at first, but even if you can't get one in, you can still go to the party! Even if you can't go in the pool, you can still hang out poolside and chill with your friends. And don't be afraid to ask your mom for tampon tips! You'll get the hang of it eventually Smile

Hey Smile
I've never had my period before. But I might have started today. Today I was talking to my friend cause I went over to her house, then when I got home I really neede to go pee. So I ran to the bathroom and took off my pants and there was this red/brownish stain in my underwear. I don't know If this is my period so I didnt tell my mum yet (shes not even home she went to the store) can u tell if this is my period or not? (p.s. it wasn't that heavy but it was like I don't know umm regular....)

Hey girlie,

It sounds like your period! It's normal for periods to start off light at first, kinda a reddish brown. Try using a pantyliner for now and keep an eye on it - and don't be scared to tell your mom! Smile She's been there!

Ok, this is really embarrassing, but I think I'm depressed. At first I thought it was just because I was on my period, but for 4 months now I've been smiling a lot less and withdrawing from everyone. I have to get a physical for my parents insurance, and I was wondering what the doctor will do? I'm 14 & the last time I had a physical was 3 years ago. Now that I have started my period, will any part of the physical change? It's with my pediatrition that I have had my whole life. Oh, how do I bring up irregular periods with my doctor, & my mom? My periods have been irregular since January, & the only person I have told was my BFF. I NOT open to talking about periods with my mom, even though she has been there & done that, is still akward. So I really want to regulate my periods, because I have been getting them twice a month since jan. I think the reason I haven't told my mom about my periods is because I'm scared that there could be something wrong & I would have to go the gynecologist. What could my doctor do about my irregular periods anyway? Please help me, I'm scared.

Hey chica! Your physical will probably be about the same, though the doctor may feel your breasts for lumps.  If you want, you can ask your mom to leave the room before you change and tell your doctor about your periods.  If she doesn't want to leave, you can always just focus on telling your doctor.  Not telling someone because you think something might be wrong isn't going to help you, Your doctor may put you on medicine to help regulate your periods or he may wait to see if they regulate themselves.  Irregular periods are SUPER common.  Getting your period twice as often as usual is much less worrisome than not getting it.  Either way, talk to your doctor and they will be able to help.  xoxo

I'm sorry, I didn't know where to put this. I'm seriously questioning my mental health right now. I'm getting so stressed out about school (because of bullies) and it's the middle of the summer. I'm fine, but then I think about it or something happens over the internet and I just feel depressed. I really don't know how to deal with this. I told my mom I wanted to see a therapist or something, but she just thinks I'm being overdramatic. Thinking about school makes my heart fludder and it makes breathing hard. I'm so scared, and I'm crying now. I really think something is wrong with me.

Hey! You're going to be ok, and I'm really glad you got online to chat about your feelings. No one likes to have their feelings invalidated, so I'm sorry your mom thinks you're being overdramatic. If people at your school are bullying you, you have to stand up for yourself. Don't let them make you feel less than you are, which is an amazing, thoughtful person. Have you tried talking to someone about it at school? Friends can help you shake the blues and also help you bring these issues to a teacher, which is where they should be brought. Thousands of kids are experienceing what you are. You are not alone. If you ever feel so upset that you have thoughts of hurting yourself or other people, please don't hesitate to go here:!2.aspx

Good luck!

I have a lot of brown discharge and I think it's my period but I don't know! Its been two days so I think it is! What do you think?
~ Jordan

Hey Jordan,

Usually brown discharge is a sign that your period is on its way! Lots of periods start off super light (with brown discharge) and then get heavier over a couple days. Keep an eye on it - if it's your period, it'll probably turn brighter red and get heavier <3

by alexia_directioner<3 on 7/26/2012 7:35:32 PM

I have what I think is brown discharge. I wear a pantyliner, I also have white discharge everyday. Do you think I will start my period soon?

Hey girlie,

If you have brown discharge right now, there's a very good chance your period could follow. It's normal for periods to start off REALLY light with brown discharge, then get heavier over a day or two. Keep an eye on it and you'll know soon enough! <3

I'm so confused about my period! A year and a half ago, I saw a reddish brown stain in my underwear, but I haven't seen it since. My doctor says I should be getting it soon, and I felt really bad cramps, but then they went away and I haven't seen any blood!! I'm so confused this is my first time is it normal for this to be happening?

I started my period in the summer but I'm not actually sure if it is really my period because I get cramps and I get blood on the toilet paper but I don't have to use pads or anything is this normal?

Hey girl! That sounds like your period, especially because your period can be super light when you first start.  Maybe try using a thin pantyliner for some protection. xxoo

A couple weeks ago a found a brown/red stain in my underwear. It wasn't much so I didn't notice it until I went to the bathroom. Nothing has happened since but I am getting more discharge than usual. So... what is it?? I heard that your first period is only a l'il bit, right?? There's been nothing since though. Please help I'm so confused!!

Hey girl!  Your first period is usually a little more than just a tiny spot.  It was probably nothing, so no need to panic.  You might be gearing up to get your period, so stay attuned to your body.  If you start to feel cramps in your lower tummy or feel more bloated than normal, it might be your period coming around. xoxo

Okay.. I'm REALLY scared!!!
Yesterday I found dried brown discharge in my underwear, and when I wiped it was red, and it looked like BLOOD. But today I have NOT gotten the brown discharge or any red blood looking thing! What is going on?! Im scared to tell my mom. Should I even tell her? And if I should, how should I tell her? And when? I really need help..

Hey girlie,

Why are you scared? If this IS your period, it's totally normal! It's nothing to panic about Smile But since you haven't gotten anything brown/red since yesterday, chances are you just got a cut down there and it started to bleed. That can happen from all sorts of things, like wiping too much/too hard after you go "#2." Just keep an eye on it - if you start bleeding again and it gets heavier/more frequent, it's probably your period. But it's not anything to be shy about! Just tell mom something like, "Hey mom... I think I have my period." She had a "first period" too so she'll understand and will help answer all your questions, get you supplies, etc. (And don't forget to check out our Periods, Period section for even more tips: Don't be scared! <3

so yesterday i think i got my first period there was this orang-y thing next to my discharge and it faded to nothing later i put on a liner though and nothing else happend! is it still my period because from yesterday nothing really happend.

Hey girl,

This could definitely be your period, or your body might just be getting ready for your first period. It's a good idea to keep a liner down there just in case. If nothing happens for a few days, you can stop wearing the liner. Your first period will most likely be pretty light, so no need to worry. Talk to your mom or a trusted adult for more advice if you need it

The problem is that it is going to be sooo hot and i don't know how to use a tampon! is there any way i can practice using one when i don't have my period? or would it be too hard or hurt? thanks!!!

Hey chica, definitely don't put a tampon in when you don't have your period. That's bad for you, and it'll probably hurt a lot. Just bring a lot of extra tampons on your trip so that you don't have to worry about going through a bunch on your first time. And don't forget the pads, too, in case you can't get it.

I have my period for 2 1/2 years by now.. I have camp in like 2 days and I don't wanna swim in my period, if it suddenly happens! The period should've came since 8 days now??!! What's wrong?

Hey chica! Don't worry about swimming with your period- just try putting in a tampon.  Your period might have just been late (there are a hundred reasons why it happens) and once you start stressing about it being late, it throws off your body's rhythm and takes even longer to get your period.  xoxo

Hey girl!  If you feel like you need to sleep for more than 12 hours a day, you should talk to your doc.  It might be nothing, but there are a lot of things that could be wrong.  If this is a new thing, then you should tell your mom and make an appointment with your doc. xoxo

I always get a painful pimple when my period is about to come. If I'm really diligent in my skin care around the time it comes, then it really isn't that bad. I'll probably get one pimple on my chin or something. But if I slacked, then it would be worse.

aleve to the rescue! i HATE cramps!

by myfatsquirrel on 7/15/2012 8:32:19 PM

The last 2 days...i've felt nauseas, but not because of being sick. I haven't been very hungry, but i've had a lot of cravings. I've had discharge for about a year, and 3 months. And i grew 2 inches in the last month or two. I think i'm about to have my first period, do you?

hey! You certainly have some of the symptoms. just remember that everyone's different, and there's no sure way to tell exactly when yours will come.

i seriously just got my period on July 10. but a couple days before i had serious headache, dizziness when standing, and not eating anything in 3 days, for people that have had there period did this happen to you?

by bandbuddy on 7/15/2012 11:04:11 AM

All of these period signs are exactly what is happening to me now. So this mean my period is coming soon? I'm 12 years old. I never really had "discharge" but could that just be like skipped? Please please help!\

Hey girlie,

It's totally impossible to predict! I know, lame answer, right? But even your doctor can't know for sure when your period is gonna come. Everyone develops at a different pace. It's awesome that you're experiencing some of these signs (that's a good hint that you're healthy!), but discharge does usually come before your period starts. But then again, it doesn't for EVERYONE because everyone is different! It's really hard to tell. Just remember that it's totally healthy to start your period sometime before you turn 16 years old - you have some time before you should be concerned <3 Hang in there and, in the meantime, read up on all things "period" so you can feel super prepared when the big day comes!

P.S. We saw you posting messages with your personal email address so girls could get advice. Please do NOT post with this anymore - it is against the rules to include your personal email address or to get in touch "privately" off the site. Instead, try creating an advice queen account:

A few months agoI thought I had gotten my period. It didn't come back the next day, and I haven't gotten it since. Is this normal? Did I get my period? I'm confused... (._.) What does that mean? Thx-a-million! Xox<3

by Vjazzy08 on 7/14/2012 4:58:51 PM

Hey smiley.<3, yea it shouldn’t be that irregular. My period was the same way and I had to go to the doctor. Now I take birth control to regulate it, so that may be the solution for you. Head to the doctors and see what they recommend. Hope it gets better. Xoxo

by Lynae P. on 7/14/2012 3:52:59 PM

Hey heather99, I think now is a good time. You’ve already had your period so you know what to expect and how to take care of yourself. Tampons come with a list of instructions just in case you get confused. Go for it girl. Xoxo

I've had my period for 4 years now but they are still irregular. Each month I write down how many days between the start of each period and it varies anywhere between 22-41.It's not a very big deal except for I am usually surprised when I do get it. Do you think this is something to worry about? Thank you!

by smiley.<3 on 7/14/2012 2:53:00 PM

by missyrox18 on 7/14/2012 10:11:39 AM

To keep my spirits up when that time of the month rolls around, I read a good book.

by otter77 on 7/14/2012 9:42:04 AM

i just got my 6 th or 7 th period. Normally they are regular flow and i never have cramps. But my last to periods have been heavy and i feel so icky. Is this normal? Also, how can i keep the cramps from being as bad? I heard excercise helps, so im going on a run with my friend! Will this help?

Hey girl,

That can be normal, but there's no harm in checking in with a doc or nurse! Exercise will help, as will drinking lots of water.

MOD MOD MOD!!!!!!!!!!
I just got my period. I have been having it for two years now, and it usually takes 3-4 days to pass. But this month is going on a whole week!!!!!! Is there something wrong, because I am concerned how long it has been lasting.

Hey girl,

Normal periods can be up to a week long, so you are probably fine,  but you can talk to a parent or a doc if you are still worried to be safe!

I am fourteen in a month and I got my first period on wednesday. Then on thursday I wore a tampon to swim (which was no problem) and it was full. I took it out and showered, and then I got barely anything for the rest of the night. I thought it was over but then it became really heavy again today around lunch time, and then became barely anything once it became evening. Is this wierd? It is always heaviest after lunchish time. Thanks for any of the help

Hey girl,

That sounds normal, especially for your first period. You will typically bleed less when sleeping since your feet are elevated. There's no harm in talking to your mom or a doc about it, though!
