I'm 12 and recently I'm just really scared. I even slept in my parents room last night because I got scared. I just don't feel safe. I saw a story on the news about a girl and her mom being kidnapped and tortured for two years. Then I thought about how that could happen to anyone and I freaked out and started crying really hard and my mom had to calm me down for an hour. I don't know what to do even though my mom gave me this whole talk about how I am safe. She says she went through the same phase. I am just scared. What do I do? Thank you. I just don't feel safe sometimes.

Hey girl, sorry that you're so upset over this. The scary stories you hear about on the news are only on TV because they're so rare. If bad stuff like that happened all the time, it wouldn't make headlines. Things like kidnaps and break-ins are unlikely to happen to you, but there are still many safety precautions that you and your family can take. Ask your 'rents about installing a burglary alarm (if you don't already have one) and never come into contact with strangers, whether it's in person or on the internet. Then try to put your mind at ease. If you got nervous about skin cancer every time you walked outside, or freaked over the possibility of accidents every time you got in a car, you wouldn't be able to enjoy life. Tell your doctor if your fear doesn't get better.

Hope this helps! xo
