How do I strike up a convo?

I like this new guy in my school and I think he kinda likes me, too. The only problem is we have nothing to talk about. What are some good conversation topics?
HIS ANSWER: “Well if you need to, talk about schoolwork if you're in the same classes,” says Brent, 15. “You can also talk about his old school.” Other possible topics include current events, in school and out, but keep it relatable.
DECODED: If you’re going to the same school and especially if you share a class, you already have a lot of things to talk about. If you’re tired of chatting about math class, get curious about his old school and hometown. Ask him what he’s into, and if you  dig the same things, you’ve hit gold!
YOUR MOVE: This isn’t an interview, babe, so don’t be nervous. A question here and a comment there can help ya make headway. Being your sweet, sincere self will score ya major points, as will humor. One more thing: If he’s a sports junkie but you can barely tell a soccer ball from a pigskin, don’t pretend to be an authority. Instead, ask him if he’d be willing to show you the finer points of the next big basketball game. Score!
