How to say "NO" when someone asks you out

OK, so you just found out that one of the guys at school likes you and wants to ask you out, but you're just not that into him. Now what? No matter the sitch, it is totally fine to turn someone down. If you're not interested, dont 'feel pressured to say "Yes". To keep things as little awk as possible, here are some ways to turn him down (without totally crushing his heart):

You're not attracted to him: He's a nice guy but you just simply aren't attracted to him in that way.

What to do: Be straightforward with the him. Say something like “No thank you, but that’s sweet of you to ask” to let him down easily, while still being assertive. Remember, letting him know you are flattered but are not interested is much better (and nicer) than just flat out saying something like "Ew! NO!"

You don’t want to ruin your friendship: Your BGF just asked you to be more than friends, and you love him, but you def don’t want to mess up your friendship by dating.

What to do: Tell him why you love being his friend and highlight how much you value your friendship. Tell him “You’re my BGF, my partner in crime, and we have so much fun together, but for now, can we just be friends?”

It’s your best friends bro: This is probably one of the hardest situations––you seriously have the biggest crush on him, and it seems like a dream come true that he is asking you out, but it’s definitely a bestie no-no.

What to do: Stick by your BFF and tell him, “Sorry, but that would make things weird between me and your sis, and I’d never want to hurt her".

You don’t really know him : You’ve seen him around, but you’ve never actually talked to him and feel a little awk that he even asked you to date.

What to do: Try friendship first. Tell him: “That’s so sweet, but I’d like to get to know you more, wanna hang with my friends and I after school?” This will give you the opportunity to get to know eachother and test out if dating would actually be ideal.

You have different friend groups and not a lot a in common: The guy with the not so great record in school has just asked you out, you think he’s cute, but he’ll totally clash with your group of friends.

What to do: A simple “No thanks” and a subject change will do the trick like, “Are you headed to the soccer game later?” Keep in mind, opposites sometimes attract, and it’s not always a bad thing to do something different from your friends so just go with your gut.
