CRUSHES

Advice

Stop trying to make your crush notice you!

Have you ever rolled your eyes when somebody told you that your dream guy should like you for you? Did you chuckle (and continue to make clever ship names) when that same person said he’s not your dream guy if he doesn’t? If so, listen up, 'cause here's the harsh truth: They're right, you’re wrong and all that eye rolling’s going to give you the worst headache.

You may have heard this all before, but there’s a reason why Colbie Caillat’s “Try” is such a hit. The best crushes are those who are genuinely interested in your favorite hobbies and killer personality. Here’s why you shouldn’t change a thing.

Pretending to be who you’re not is exhausting.
Think about how much work goes into the production of a school play. You memorize your lines, act your way through dress rehearsal after dress rehearsal and, when it’s finally time for premiere night, you’ve spent so many hours in character that you can’t wait to wear your own clothes again. Playing another role can be entertaining, but it truly does take a lot out of you. Would you want to spend every waking second watching professional hockey just to get a dude to date you? If you have to work overtime for a first date, he may not be worth it.

Winning him over the way you are is exciting.
Is there anything more amazing than that feeling you get when you realize the guy you’ve had your eye on forever is a total sucker for your clarinet skills? Flirting is so much more fun (and comfortable) when you know you’re doing it with a person who’s attracted to the things that make you happy. So take pride in the fact that your socks never match, because girl, you’re amazing.

If he’s not interested, he’s not interesting.
No relationship can be successful without at least some common ground. Having different passions and viewpoints will help you and your crush learn new things. However, it’s super hard to keep dating a guy who refuses to understand your Zendaya obsession. Separate interests will only get you so far. After that, there needs to be enough mutual understanding to keep things going.
