How to deal when your parents don't like your bae

Getting along with your parents isn't always easy when you're growing up. You fight about homework, curfew, chores—everything. Add a new relationship into the mix, and you and your parents are bound to butt heads even more. And if you're dating someone your parents don't like, that will likely be a source of tension in your relationship with them, too. It's fine for you and your parents not to agree on everything, but it's especially sticky when you disagree over something that's such a big part of your life. It's difficult to deal with, but we've found out how.

Hear your parents out

Once your parents have met your new boo and decided that they dislike them, try to figure out why. It's possible that they just don't like the thought of you dating this person because you're still their "little girl," meaning it has nothing to do with the actual person you're dating. If this is the case, talk to your parents about how you're maturing and why you think you're ready for a relationship. If it turns out that they actually dislike your bae, take their words to heart. They have a more discerning eye, so attempt to look at the world from their perspective.

Open up about your own feels

Without getting overly gushy, talk to your parents about how this person makes you feel so that they may see things from your perspective. Here is where you can suggest that they try to get to know your bae better so they can see what you see in them. Shutting your parents out of your life is never good, so ask them to try and stay involved and open minded about your new relationship.

Remember, they've been in your shoes

Your parents have seen relationships come and go, so they're bound to give some very wise advice. When they do dish it out, know that their words are coming from a place of experience and love.

At the end of the day if you still don't agree, all you can do is be respectful and make sure that your voice is heard.
