Sugar Pumpkin Nightlight

Bring the fall festivities indoors with this sweet take on a Jack-O-Lantern.
Place it on your desk and enjoy the flickering light on your chem book or set it on your nightstand to illuminate your before-bed reading. Just don’t forget to blow out the candle before you hit the hay!

What You’ll Need:

1 sugar (or otherwise small) pumpkin

Newspaper

Knife (to cut off the top--let your 'rents handle this one!)

Spoon

1 small serrated knife

Votive Candle

What You’ll Do:

Head to a garden store and pick out a small pumpkin. It doesn’t have to be a sugar pumpkin, but it should be teenier than the carved and plunked on the front porch variety. For something low slung, try a Cinderella pumpkin, which are usually short and chubby.

Once you’re home, give it a good scrub in the sink and then get to work. Spread newspaper on a table and have Mom or Dad cut off the top for you. Using a spoon, scoop out the insides, just as you would with a normal Jack-O-Lantern.

Now it’s time to decide what expression your sugah baby will wear. Simpler patterns work best on small pumpkins because there’s less room to work with and thus less room for error. A dopey grin or freaky fangs—you choose the look and carefully carve it out using a small knife.

All done? Give the surface another swipe with a damp paper towel and then place a votive candle in the bottom of the pumpkin. When you’re ready to enjoy this quick Halloween decoration, light her up and bask in the glow, girl.
