Eat Right

What to eat (and what to avoid) in the caf

School cafeterias might be serving up more nutritious fare, but you still have to make a point to seek it out. Here’s what to look for once ya get in the lunch line.

Channel Mother Nature
It’s an old cliché, but it’s totally true: eat those fruits and veggies! Head to your school’s salad bar if it has one, and make yourself a delish pile of greens and load it up with as much color as you can find (but go easy on the ranch dressing). Not much of a salad girl? Get some raw veggies and add them to your pasta or your sandwich. You’ll get a serious burst of vitamins—and energy.

Upgrade the basics
Instead of white bread or a hamburger bun, ask your lunch ladies for whole wheat bread. Wondering whether you should sip on a soda or some milk? Go for low-fat milk. It’s definitely delish and soo good for ya! Chow down on a turkey or tuna sandwich instead of burgers or pepperoni pizza.

Nix the bags
Other foods that you should def avoid? Packaged and processed foods, like chips, cookies and candy. While those colored bags and sugary snacks may be calling your name, they’re not doing ya any good. Most chocolate bars have 200+ calories, and 20+ grams of sugar. Yikes! Skip the dessert at lunch and toss an apple in your bag for later. It’ll satisfy your sweet tooth and keep you full till dinner.
