Tricks for squashing game day nerves

Whether you’re the starting pitcher in softball or a member of your school’s track squad, we’ve got tips to keep you calm, cool and collected no matter what sport stress you’re facing. Get ready to perform better and enjoy your time on the field even more!

1. Eat balanced foods on game day
Don’t opt for the school’s greasy pizza or nosh only on sugary snacks all day. A couple healthy snacks, combined with a breakfast and lunch that are well-balanced between protein and carbs will ensure you have plenty of energy to kick but out there. Junk food will just leave you feeling sluggish.

2. Remember all of your training
If you start to fret on the bench or the bus, think back to all the hours you’ve spent in training. Even if you’re playing a new position or starting for the first time, your coach is placing you there because she believes in your skills—and you should, too. A dose of confidence will help clam you down.

3. Add deep breathing to your pre-game ritual
Every team has them: little chants or routines you do before kickoff. Get into the habit of centering yourself for a couple of minutes. Whether you do a few yoga postures or deep breathing, actively relaxing really works.
