Not feeling well? Catch a glimpse of the great outdoors

For the last decade or so, doctors have been discussing the healing power of good ol’ Mother Nature, but now there are brick-and-mortar hospitals putting their theories to the test.

Nemour’s Children’s Hospital opened last October just outside of Orlando, and it pretty much sounds like the best hospital ever—you know, if you have to be in the hospital in the first place. There are floor-to-ceiling windows and huge, rambling garden terraces with different sections that excite different senses (xylophone benches, anyone?). Sure, it’s fun. But doctors and nurses are seeing a real difference in patients who take advantage of these newfangled amenities. For one, they tend to heal at least a day faster than their counterparts who stay inside with the drapes closed.

The lesson? Whether you’re tucked inside a hospital ward bed or are just at home battling the flu, throw those blinds open and take in the view. Just looking at the wonders of the great outdoors can boost your spirit…and your immune system, it seems.
