Wanna remember the holidays? Put away the camera

It’s pretty much second nature these days to whip out a camera for any event, major or minor. Pup’s curled up on the bed wearing a Santa hat? Snap! Sister just decorated sugar cookies? Snap! Hot cocoa party antics taking over your living room? Snap! Snap! Snap!

Having those mementos is great. You can Instagram them, scrapbook them and share them to your heart’s content. But when it comes to remembering what happened while you were busy framing the shot, well, your brain might just be blank.

A recent study found that people had far less recall of an object they had taken a picture of versus an object they had just observed. And while you might shrug your shoulders and say it doesn’t matter, since you have a digital record of the item, anyway, the researchers counter that because we have so many photographic records saved, the clutter does little to help jog our memories.

Moral of the story? Savor the moment, sweeties, and put the camera down for a second.
