The truth about your favorite cereal

We’ve grown up with the familiar faces from our favorite boxes of cereal like Cap’n Crunch and the rabbit from Trix cereal, but these fun loving characters have a dirty little secret. What they’re not telling you is that they're jam packed with TONS of sugar. In fact, a cup of cereal (like Apple Jacks) has the same amount of sugar as three Ahoy Cookies. And while dessert for breakfast might be what we all really want...it’s definitely not what we need.

Why is this bad?
Breakfast is an essential part of your day and gives you the energy you need during the day, whether you’re acing exams in school or spending your days just hangin’ with friends. Eating a bowl of sugary cereal on the daily may lead you to crash later in the day or even lead to long-term issues like diabetes and obesity, which is no good.

What you can do...
When you’re picking out your morning meal, take a look at the nutritional information on the side of the box. Check how much sugar there is per serving but be sure you look at how big a serving actually is. A serving size of Cocoa Puffs might not have too much sugar, but if you’re downing two servings to prep for your day, you could be in trouble.

Switch up your breakfast.

Try a new healthier alternative like delish avocado toast, yummy Greek yogurt and granola, or a tasty fruit smoothie. Not ready to ditch your routine of cereal and milk? Swap out your sugary cereal with one that has less sugar and with a whole grain certification.
