Why it's important to take mental health days

From work and school to friends and family, it can be hard trying to balance everything while also trying to take care of yourself. It's often said that the only way you can stay home from school is if you're physically sick, but mental health can affect you more than physical health. If you feel like you're at a point where you need a mental health day then talk to your parents or teachers. Let them know you need a day to reenergize and deal with any stress or anxiety you may have. Check out the list below of some important reasons for you to take one.

Reduce your stress.
If you're taking a mental health day odds are you have a ton of things going on around you. You're trying to get good grades on all your papers and tests for school while also trying to work a few days a week. Eventually it all adds up and you feel like you're going to explode if you don't take a day to relax and leave all the work alone.

Be more productive.
Taking time to step away from work actually makes you work more productively and impacts your work in a good way. Your mind is now calmer and ready to take on whatever tasks you have ahead of you.

Get outside.
Whether you live in the city or the country, it can help your mental health on your day off to ground yourself and take in your surroundings. We often get so busy that we forget to stop and take a breath of fresh air (literally!).

Catch up on sleep.
Teens need between 8-12 hours of sleep a night, but chances are you don't get anywhere close to that every night. Waking up early and doing homework contribute to the bad sleep patterns of teens so taking a day off to catch up on some much needed hours isn't a bad idea.

Reconnect with yourself.
During your mental health day, just enjoy yourself and do things that will help relax you. Take a hot bubble bath, go for a run outside, bake your fave treats or spend time with your pets. Don't forget that you are taking time to take care of the most important person: yourself.
