We Tried It: Synchronized swimming

It always seems to be hard to stay in shape during the last days of summer With all the free time to nosh on junk food and soda, sometimes a girl just can’t help herself! Taking advantage of your local pool is a great way to stay fit, but swimming endless laps can get pretty boring. Why not try a different water exercise? We found that synchronized swimming is a perf way to tone your bod fast before school.

If you don’t know what synchro swimming is, think of it as a cross between swimming, gymnastics and dance. Synchronized swimming is one of the toughest Olympic sports-–and the girls that compete in this event are in tip-top shape. Swimming routines not only tone your body, but also improve your flexibility and endurance.

You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to learn some moves in the pool. The trick to torching calories is to stay afloat in the water by constantly moving. The basic move that keeps you up is called sculling. Lay flat and face up on top of the water with your belly button on the surface, and move your arms in a circular motion near your hips. Once you have mastered this, try doing a few leg lifts or log rolls to up the intensity. Then, challenge yourself to even harder moves. Try lifting both legs at once without sinking.

You can always do some moves by yourself, but workouts are always more fun with friends! Get a few together and have a competition. Grab some music, split into teams, and make a routine of a few moves.  Bonus points if your team wins. Check out usasynchro.org to find a synchronized swimming club near you.
