Your Bod

I have sore boobs

My boobs are really sore. What's up with that?
Hey girl, sounds like your boobs are just growing or perhaps it’s around when you get your period. It can be easy to assume the worst, but it’s rarely the case that there’s anything seriously wrong. Instead, make sure your breasts are supported and if the pain is really bad, talk to your mom about taking ibuprofen (Advil). You’ll be fine in no time.

The science behind breast pain

First thing’s first: WHY are your breasts sore? According to the children’s health organization, Nemours < http://www.nemours.org/welcome.html>, it can be for several different reasons. The first is that your breasts are growing and the area around your breast bud is a little tender — literal growing pains.

The second is that you’re near your period and are having PMS. Your breasts may be retaining a little more fluid, and like other parts of your bod may be bloated. No need to fret though, that too is totes normal; many girls experience that before (and even during) their period, courtesy of their hormones. The thing to do? Make sure your chest is supported and rest assured: The pain will be gone soon enough along with your period.

When to see a doctor

There are two other cases, however, in which Kidshealth.org recommends you talk to a professional asap. If there is any indication of discharge coming from your breasts when they’re sore, that’s a big red flag. Call a doc immediately!

Breast pain can also be an early sign of pregnancy. This is not something to worry about though, if you’re not sexually active. Othwerwise, it’s important to talk to your parents immediately.

Combatting the pain

With puberty comes some major bod changes, but you don’t have to let them get in the way of your life. When it comes to chest pain, make sure you’ve got the right support. Talk to your parents about getting a bra if you don’t already wear one. Be sure to get fitted by a professional too, to make sure you’re buying the right size.

In terms of lifestyle, do what you already should be doing: Exercise and healthy eating not only keep your bod in its best shape, but they also help lessen the pain. One more thing to try: Take a rest, literally. Sometimes a little sleep and getting your mind off the pain can go a long way toward making it less noticeable. Good luck!
