True or false: Depilatories harm your skin

My mom won't let me use Nair or Veet because she thinks they do something to your legs do through the acid in the products. Is she right?

Generally, no hair removal will permanently damage your skin. However, there are certain precautions you should take to stay safe.

Like any other hair removing cream, Nair or Veet is not advisable for girls with super sensitive skin. If you don’t have sensitive skin, though, you can try Nair or Veet, just be sure to follow the instructions. Doing a test patch on a small area of skin will let you know whether or not the product will irritate you. Leave the lotion on for a minimum amount of time, or else the product can burn your skin. Even if you follow the instructions, Nair or Veet can leave marks like razor burns—don’t worry, they aren’t permanent. Like razor burns, these marks will too fade away.

Last of all, use common sense. If you try Nair or Veet and find that it leaves your skin irritated, don’t try it again. You may be allergic to it, or the active ingredients might make it too harsh for your skin.
