It’s been so hot all week and I’m sick of drinking water. Here are a few if my fave summery alternatives to H2O that won’t wreck your healthy eating plan.1. Half ‘n’ half. Brewed iced tea (no sugar, please!) with a splash of lemonade. Classic. 2. Seltzer with lime. Kinda boring, but I love it. 3. Del’s lemonade. A Rhode Island special...it’s frozen lemonade, but somehow better. These are kinda sugary, but I have 1 a year. 4. Juice spritzers (part OJ, part club soda). Great for when you want something a teeny bit sweet. 5. Basil lime H20. Chopped up basil leaves (like 4-5 big ones), with lots of limes (3-4 slices) all smushed up in glass. Add water and a bit o’ sugar (seriously, half a teaspoon. Tops!), lots of ice and fill your glass with water. It’s inspired by a yummy-but-weird limeade drink at a restaurant the GL girls lunch at! Healthy hearts,Katie A.Blog It Out... Do girls ever get bored of sippin’ on water all day, or is that just me? What are you fave drinks for summer? How do you stay hydrated when the sun is pounding down?

With so many great sports out there to play, some, such as badminton, get overlooked. Sure, it’s not the most popular sport on the block, but badminton is fun, fast-paced and perfect for sunny summer fun! Badminton is basically a mix between tennis, volleyball and squash. You play with long handled racquets, and “birdies” or shuttlecocks (those things that get whacked back and forth). The original birdie was a cork with feathers sticking off one side creating a conic shape, allowing it to spiral through the air. Now, most people use cheaper and more durable plastic versions that you can find at any sporting goods store. You can play singles or doubles, serving the birdie over a net about five feet high. The server has to serve the birdie within a specific box on the opposite diagonal side of the net. The rest entails a rally back and forth across the net, peppered with spikes, slams, drop shots and clears. It’ll really keep ya’ on your feet! If your school offers badminton as a club or sport, you might want to consider giving it a shot. It varies from being considered a fall or spring sport and is guaranteed to keep you entertained while improving your hand-eye coordination. Can’t find it at school? Check our your local YMCA or any other activity center in your area for club teams. Better yet, pick up a yard set from llbean.com, SEARS or Target and get the whole fam involved. By: Holland White

How easy do you think it is to get your paws on a pack of cigarettes? According to The New York Times, that's the question researchers are asking to see how likely it is for a 6th grader to smoke when they get a li’l older. The study showed that kids that answer with an “OMG! It would be a breeze!” are tons more likely to pick up the unhealthy habit when they hit high school than those that thought it might be a little trickier to snag a cig. And if their besties are lighting up, they are tons more likely to start puffing away, too.Researchers interviewed 1,195 peeps in the 6th grade and then had follow-up interviews to see if anyone had become addicted after a few years had gone by. And here’s the real shocker: at the beginning of the research, 168 students said that they had already smoked at least one cigarette while they were 11-years-old or younger.Sure enough, those that thought getting a hold of the nicotine rolls were easy as pie were the ones that started smoking on a regular basis. And what made things even worse is that 1/3 of the kids that were interviewed knew of stores that would sell cigarettes to minors…which is totally illegal! But with all the risks that smoking brings (such as lung cancer, heart disease and attacks), it’s clear to see that being healthy is the way to go and making bad choices for your bod isn’t. So def don’t light up.By: Aubrey Tippett
