Trail Mix Pouches

I have a love/hate relationship with trail mix: it’s super-yummy, but is LOADED with fat and calories. Plus, it’s way easy to down an entire bag of it, which is normally 6-8 servings. You can nosh half a day’s worth of calories, without even realizing it.

Back to the delish business at hand. The other day I decided to give these little morsels a go. Like most GORP they’re high in cals and fat, but the single-serving size means you can’t go to town on an entire bag. The dark-chocolate nuggets and the nuts were a good balance of sweet ‘n’ salty. These treats might be good if you’re spending a week running around at sports camp or will be hiking for an entire day, but are way too decadent if you’ve got an afternoon planned on the couch.

If you’re a li’l less active, try making your own trail mix out of a high-fiber cereal, popcorn, some nuts and dried fruits. You’ll get the sweetness, but not all the fat that’s in the chocolate. Or, opt for apples or bananas and peanut butter, hummus and carrots or a small salad. But if you can’t resist the occasional sugary temptation, a tiny, to-go trail mix might be just the nosh you need on your next major fitness excursion.
