Dear Carol

"Dear Carol, I'm struggling to find special gifts for my family"

Dear Carol,

I've been struggling to find special things to get my family for their birthdays or holidays. For example, I like making them cards, but it just seems like they have a lot of stuff. And it's becoming close to impossible to get them something they don't have. How do I keep their gifts feeling special without getting repetitive?

- Gift Giver

Dear Gift Giver,

Your family is lucky that you are so thoughtful. And no worries: Most parents and grandparents do not get tired of cards, especially when they're heartfelt or homemade. As for gifts, if you're always buying your dad, say, a pen or golf balls, browse a bookstore. If you have sibs, pool your money and splurge on clothes or a gourmet treat. Your mom? Maybe earrings? She'll think of you whenever she wears them. Consider taking a photo, getting it printed and framing it. Or making an album. Even baking your family's favorite dessert can go a long way. If you have a Christmas tree, make or buy a special ornament. In short, stay creative but don't worry too much either. It truly is the thought that counts.
