Am I a horrible daughter?
I’m a sophomore, and there is always a party at the end of each semester. I requested really early that we not do anything as a family the first weekend of winter break so I could go to the party. My mom said OK, and we even talked about my outfit. Now, my mom wants to go out of town for her birthday (she’s turning 50).
I’ve been given the option of staying home but also a guilt trip about family loyalty and blah, blah, blah. I’d rather go to the party. How can I explain this to my mom? Am I a horrible daughter?
Dear “Horrible Daughter,”
It’s great that your parents are letting you decide what to do. While being there for your mom’s 50th is the right thing to do, there may be some wiggle room. Can your family go someplace close so you could go to the party, sleep at a friend’s, then join your family the next day? Or can you family leave after the party?
If they’re going far, I’d suggest going on the trip because there will be more cool parties ahead, yet how many times will your family go to the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls?
