LIFE

Dear Carol

My boss scheduled me to work when I'm at camp. Help!

I worked at a pool last summer and wasn't planning on working there again because I'm going to camp. My mom bumped into my boss a few weeks ago, and when he asked why I couldn't work, she explained that I'd be gone for five weeks. He said he'd still hire me and we’d work something out. I turned in a sheet a month ago stating when I was available. However, today at work they gave me a new handout scheduling me to work next week! I’m leaving this weekend. There's no way I can find subs for all my days before then, and I'm afraid I'm going to get fired for the August weeks! How can I explain this to my boss?

Dear Summer Job Blues,

Hold your head high and knock on your boss’s door and politely tell him that you are sorry that there was a misunderstanding and that you and your mom tried to be clear from the start about your being away for five weeks. Add, “I love this job and hate to leave you in the lurch, but I just can't do those days." Who knows? He may say, “Oh, that’s right, of course.” Even if he doesn’t, finding subs is his problem, not yours, because you did not lead him on or pretend to be free when you weren’t.
