Dear Carol

New kid in town

My family just moved and I’m going to a new school.  People liked me at my old school, but I don’t know anyone here, and I don’t know how to act.

-New In Town

Dear New In Town,

Who says you have to act?  You made friends in your old school, and you’ll do it again.  Be yourself—your friendliest self.  Your nervousness is understandable, but if you say, “hi,” smile a lot, introduce yourself, and listen well, you’ll find your footing.

It also helps to join after-school activities (e.g., chorus, student council, soccer) or community service activities (e.g., cleaning a park, helping at a soup kitchen, or participating in a sport outside school).  Working at things you like will put you in contact with people you like who will like you.
