Friends

My friend is mad at me for moving!

I told my best friend that I might be going to a new school, but instead of listening to what I wanted to say, she started hysterically yelling and crying. Now she is super mad at me and won’t talk to me! What should I do?

Hey girl,

I'm sorry to hear that you have to go through this when I'm sure you're already stressed out about the move. Transferring is never easy (trust me, I've done it 5 times!) especially when it's time to tell your friends. However, I can guarantee you that it will get better in time and with the right tips.

So, your BFF probably was in a lot of shock when you broke the news to her. Who wouldn't be when it was so unexpected? With that in mind, you're going to have to fix this sitch one step at a time. Don't just explain why you're transferring or ask her to understand the minute you see her. Ask her to meet up with you, simply to hang out like you guys always do. You want her to feel comfortable and at ease so that when you do have the chance to talk, she won't be upset.

Once your friend is in a collected state, assure her that you aren't going anywhere just yet. But before you want her to listen to all that you have to say, apologize. Not for going to a new school (because that's not your fault), but to show her that you care and are sorry that the news upsets her. Again, you aren't guilty of anything, but this will help her to open up to you again.

Lastly, let her talk first. Tell her that you want to know what's on her mind. Let her spill it all out. This shows that you really care about the friendship and that moving does not mean that you're leaving her.
