Our guide to landing the summer gig of your dreams

Summer is just around the corner, and you *still* haven't decided what you want to do. You don't want to babysit like last year, but going to lifeguard training sounds a little scary. Instead of worrying about what you'll do to earn money this summer, be excited about it! Summer jobs are a blast, and there are so many opportunities for summer programs and internships. To find out how to land the perfect summer gig, read on.

Do your research.
Check out local job listings and websites and ask your school if they have any openings for student jobs and internships or work study. Be open to new possibilities and research every position you apply for. It's important to be prepared and explore all your options.

Show enthusiasm.
Call or schedule an appointment to show the company you're serious. Let them know why you're interested in working for them and what you'd like to learn--for example, in most companies, teamwork is super important so express how much of a team player you are and how you're willing to help your co-workers in any way you can. Or explain to your interviewer or contact how you might not have a lot of experience but you're more than ready to learn new things and take on challenges.

Be present.
Always show up on time (aka 10 minutes early!) and don't zone out when given instructions or interviewing. It's important to pay attention and respond to what an interviewer is saying. Be engaged and don't be afraid to ask questions. And don't forget that first impressions are *everything* so treat everyone with the same respect and with a great big smile on your face.

Don't be shy.
You have a lot to offer, so don't skip out on an interview or audition because you're scared. Appreciate the opportunities and always do your best, even if things don't turn out the way you planned. It may seem scary now, but you might regret a missed chance. You'll never know if you don't try. Even if you don't get the job you wanted or you don't get called back for an interview, don't beat yourself up. Remember that there are plenty more awesome opps out there and, if this really was the one thing you wanted, there's always next year.
