The New Girl Code: Going from private to public

I have attended a private Catholic school for my whole entire life, but this coming school year, I’m going to a public high school. I have no idea what to expect. Are people in public school different from private school? And what do you wear everyday? Please help!

Hey girlie, while you may be nervous about making the switch, public and private schools are a lot more similar than you may think. Sure, your private school was probably a lot smaller than your new school will be, but that can actually be a good thing. More people means more opportunities to meet a diverse group of friends, instead of just sticking with the same group of besties you’ve known forever.  You’ll meet and become friends with people you may have previously written off, so take this as a chance to expand your group of BFFs.

Just like at your private school, you’ll become close with some people and not so close with others. The kids in public school are just as smart, sporty, and friendly as those in private school, and you’ll soon find the group you fit in best with.  No matter what type of school you went to last year, everyone’s a little nervous on the first day and just wants to make friends. So, if you put a big smile on your face and act confident, you’ll make friends in no time.

Besides the size, another big difference between public and private school is the dress code. You might be sad to say buh-bye to the matching uniforms, but be happy that you can now express your own personal style! Your new school might have certain restrictions, like no mini-skirts or belly shirts, so be sure to check those out. Besides that, choose clothes that are cute but also comfortable! You wouldn’t want to be stuck in math class wearing your tightest jeans, so pick clothes that’ll be comfy for the entire day. And one more thing—leave the skin-tight dresses and sky-high heels at home. Be casual and let your inner fashionista go wild!
