Tough Stuff

3 steps to standing up for yourself

I need help learning to speak my mind. I go to a school where everyone has pretty much all the same beliefs, and I feel so different. My family and friends often ask what I think about something, and I always say what I think they want to hear. How can I be more confident in my opinions.
Sometimes it can be hard to put yourself out there. But as tough as it can be, it’s way important to embrace your differences. Don’t be afraid to show the real you!

Different isn't bad
Sure, it’s nice to hang with friends who have things in common, but one of the greatest parts of getting to know others is getting to hear different beliefs and opinions from people with different backgrounds. If everyone was exactly the same or had the same opinions, things would be pretty boring, no? Being unique can be a li’l scary, but also way refreshing.
Be bold and open

Voicing your opinions, especially if they’re diff than the norm, can be intimidating. But, how you feel and what you think are just as important as the feelings and thoughts of your peers. There’s no reason yours should count for any less, so stand up for what you believe, girl! Always keep an open mind and be willing to hear what others have to say. You’ll learn a lot and be able to make better judgments.

Agree to disagree
Having different opinions can be a great way to broaden your horizons. That means it’s totally OK to voice your views, even if it’s diff than a friend’s. Just make sure you’re mature about it. Keep in mind that no one should try to force their beliefs on anyone else. Always try to see the other side, whether you agree or not. If you don’t exactly see eye to eye, be the bigger person and agree to disagree. No one can fault you for having a diff opinion if you’re mature about it.
