Tough Stuff

Should I blow my savings?

I really want to buy my own computer. I have been saving my money for a few years now and have around $900. Now that I have enough for a computer, I’m starting to freak out. Should I really spend all that money at one time?

Good for you for saving so diligently, babe! When it comes to spending your hard-earned moolah, only you can decide what’s worth your entire savings…or even a small part of it. If you’re having second thoughts now that your goal is within reach, consider your quandary carefully. It might be helpful to go to a computer store just to see what your money could buy. If you want to spend all $900, you could probably get a pretty good comp. But for a fraction of that—say just a couple hundred bucks—you could purchase a portable netbook or tablet.

Also consider the other savings goals that are coming up. If you’re going to be driving soon, you might want to keep saving the money you make for a car. If there’s a pricey camp you want to enroll in during the summer, your money could go toward that. Or, you could keep it handy for college.

As I said before, only you can decide what to spend your money on and when to spend it. If it’s burning a hole in your pocket, consider purchasing something fabulous now and saving the rest for later. Or, divvy it up on small purchases—a little for an MP3 player, some more for a cute pair of boots. The choice is up to you!
