How to handle awkward body talks with your parents

At one point or another, we all have to have an uncomfortable talk with our parents (or at least our moms) about our bodies. Whether you have a "down there" infection and need an OB-GYN appointment or just got your period for the first time and don't know how to use a tampon, here's how to approach your 'rents with minimum awkwardness.

Give a little bit of warning.

There's nothing to be ashamed of, of course, but we'd by lying if we said that talking about your bod is never embarrassing. A bit of a heads up helps both you and your parent prepare, so start your convo with something like "This is really awkward, but…" to acknowledge the cringe-iness before it starts.

What you shouldn't do? Text Mom hours in advance saying "I have something to talk to you about." She'll be panicking all day.

Be totally honest.

Leaving out the details isn't going to help anyone—and in some cases, it can adversely affect your health. If you started having symptoms two weeks ago and were too scared to say anything, don't say it "just started yesterday."

Be respectful, but stand your ground.

If you really think that going on birth control would be best for you, for example, but your parents say no, don't freak out right away. Surely you can understand why they might not share your view (and, ultimately, they have the authority to say no), but presenting the facts and having firm reasoning will make a huge difference.
