Tough Stuff

Lying about taking my medication

I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) about two years ago. I can't swallow pills at all. I have been lying to my whole family for at least a year and a half about taking them when I haven’t.

I don't have the heart to tell my mom about it. I am worried because I haven't taken them in 19 months and I don't know if I am completely sterile. I want to have kids when I am older and I am almost 16. What do I do?

Hey girl! This is definitely a tough situation and I’m so sorry to hear that this is happening to you. However, if you want to do what is best for your health, there are a few things you need to do.

Come clean

Please tell your mom you haven’t been taking the pills for the past 19 months. I know it won’t be easy, but it'll feel so good to get this off your chest. Catch your mom when she’s not busy or stressed out and let her know you need to talk to her about something. Tell her you have a hard time swallowing pills and never could conquer the fear, which is why you haven’t been taking them. Let her know how sorry you are that you lied. She might be a little mad at first, but you have to get this out so you can fix your health, stat.

Help your health

The best thing you can do is make an appointment with your doctor ASAP. Telling a pro that you haven’t been taking the pills will be hard, but you need to do that so they can give you proper care. Who knows? There might even be an alternative to taking pills.

Put your pill fears at ease

If you have to stick with pills, there are ways to overcome your phobia. Sure, the first time you swallow a pill can be a little scary. There’s this feeling that it’s going to get stuck and you’re going to choke. That won’t happen. Just stick it on your tongue, relax and drink water or juice like you regularly would. If that doesn’t work, try eating something and sticking the pill in your mouth before you swallow. Pill too big? Cut it in half and take one half at a time. Or, chop it up and mix it in with a food or shake.

When it comes to your health, it’s important to do what the doctor says. You shouldn’t lie or be afraid to admit you have a hard time swallowing pills because there are ways to solve that prob. Now that you’ve realized you need help, go get it. The sooner you do it, the healthier you'll be. Good luck, girlie.

Xoxo,
Liz
