An original poem: The World is NOT a Teenage Romance Novel

Sorry,
But I'm not pretty
Or skinny
Or especially smart.
There's no perfect boy
For me to fall for.
They're still just a bit too immature
I am okay the way I am.

Where are our gay princesses?
Or transgendered princes?
And why don't any of the Disney stars
Have mental disabilities?
If we are really accepted,
Any way we are,
Why just a cute boy
And a pretty girl?

I am me.
Loud,
Easily excited,
And socially awkward.
I am strange.
Anyone can be unique.
Everyone is unique.
No politically correctness here
STRANGE.
I am good the way I am.

Where are our peace parades?
Our revolutions?
I want change,
And not the kind with Lincoln's head on it.

“Thin is Fab”
“Bikini Bod”
“Lose Weight Quick!”
The magazines tell us
That we have to be thin
To be acceptable,
To be beautiful,
To be okay.
We're not all airbrushed models
With long legs
And perfect skin.
I am perfect the way I am.
