Beach Bound Bud

I’m moving to Hawaii. I’m really excited about living near the beach, but I don’t want to leave my friends. My dad is in the military, so I’ve done this before—but it’s different this time because I’ve made such special friends. How can I keep my old friendships back at home and make some cool new friends in Hawaii?

Having to move away from your good friends totally stinks. But think of your upcoming move as a great opportunity to meet some new buds.

Stay in touch with your true-blues via e-mail and calls. I’m not going to say it’ll be easy, because it won’t be. It’s tough when you’re not there for all the day-to-day stuff. On the other hand, friends should be psyched to talk to someone who can be objective and caring. Plus, think of all the cool Hawaii stories you’ll be able to share.

As for making new pals on the Big Island, show interest in your new classmates and neighbors. Take up an after-school sport, join chorus or volunteer with your church youth group. Get involved with things you like, and you’re bound to meet a bunch of great new friends!
