Meet Caroline Sunshine
New family flick Marmaduke lands in theaters today—yay! Are you excited? The adorable movie is about Marmaduke, a famous Great Dane, and his life as he is “livin’ large” in Orange County. Full of laughter and love, it’s the perfect movie for all ages to start your summer right.
We got the chance to catch up with 14-year-old Caroline Sunshine, who plays Barbara Winslow in the flick. Here, she shares everything from her love of animals to her favorite summer treats…
GL: Tell us about your character, Barbara.
Caroline: She is a member of the Winslow family, who is Marmaduke’s owner. Our family lives in Kansas and we end up getting uprooted to Orange County, which is, ironically, where I’m originally from.
How might teens relate to Barabara?
She really is just a typical teenager going through all of the emotions. She has this big move and that really kind of rocks her world. The other thing about Barbara is she’s a huge texter. I didn’t get my first cell phone until the beginning of this year, so I’m gradually learning to be a better texter. I had a lot of good practice on set.
Do you have any pets in real life?
I have a Maltese Shih Tzu. I’m notorious for dressing her up in sweaters. She’s going through a teething phase right now, so instead of wanting to play with a ball or toys, she likes to shred stuff.
If you could be any animal right now, what would you be and why?
A cross between a Great Dane and a Maltese. A Great Maltese who loves sweaters—that’s what I’d be.
Summer’s almost here! If you could describe your favorite family vacation, what would it be?
My dad and I always visit Pawleys Island in South Carolina. We’ve gone back there for almost 10 years now. We go to the beach and different theme parties every night. That’s always been my favorite memory with my family because I get to do it every year. It’s a week to kind of remove yourself from life and just chill out.
What’s your favorite summer snack?
I’m obsessed with frozen yogurt because you don’t feel totally guilty eating it. It’s not as bad as ice cream and, during the hot summer months, it’s a great way to just refresh. [Plus], you can put whatever toppings you want on it.
