Am I too young to shave?

My mom wont let me shave! I know I'm only 11, but my legs are REALLY hairy. My mom says I'm too young to shave, and not to worry about it, but I do. She told me I can't shave until I'm 14—that's three years away! They are so hairy now, I can't imagine what they will be like when I'm 14. All my friends are shaving, and people have started to notice that I'm not. I don't want to wear shorts or skirts or a bathing suit this summer. What should I do?

Hey girl! This is a situation every girl goes through, and instead of sneaking razors like I did, I think it's best to sit down and have a conversation with your mom.

Explain Yourself
She doesn't want you shaving until you are 14 because in her eyes, shaving means you are growing up. Let her know you are still her little girl, but having hairy legs is embarrassing for you.

Hear Her Side
Maybe she has a valid reason for why she wants you to wait until you are 14 to shave. Hear her out and see if you can't come to a compromise. If she still thinks it's too soon, maybe you can come to an agreement to shave in a year or two, rather than three.

Don't Be Embarrassed
Remember, shaving is a big ol’ pain in the butt. It's also something that girls are pressured to do at a young age. There is no reason to shave at 11, 12, 13 or even 14. A lot of girls don't start shaving until they are older anyway, so don't get too upset if your mom sticks with her rule.

Shaving is an important milestone in a girl's life. I think every girl remembers the first time she shaved. But it's important to do it when you are completely ready, not when everyone around you says you should be ready.
