Should I break up with my boyfriend?

I already have a BF, but he doesn’t talk to me on the bus or in school. He’s hugged me once, but that’s it. When I try talking to him about it, he just says, “I don’t know.”

There’s this other guy in on of my classes. I think he likes me, and I like him, but I don’t want to cheat on my BF. I think the other guy would make a better boyfriend, though. Should I break up with my BF and go out with the other guy?

Hey there, girl. I wish I could say boy probs disappear when the crush becomes the boyfriend, but as you’ve discovered for yourself, that’s not the case.

What do you want in a relationship?

You need to ask yourself what you expect this other guy to do that your current boyfriend doesn’t. Do you want to hold hands? Hug in the halls? Chat on the way to class? There’s nothing wrong with wanting any of those things or none of them, but if your current boy doesn’t fulfill your relationship needs, it may be time to look elsewhere.

Break the News

You’re right: Cheating on your boy—or any sort of “friend”—is totally uncool. I know breaking up is hard to do, but sometimes it’s the only reasonable option.

To give your BF a fair shot, sit down outside of school and tell him that you enjoy being with him, but you feel he doesn’t want to be in a relationship. And (says you), if he doesn’t want to be with you anymore, that’s totally cool. But you’re not happy with the way things are now, so if he’s not willing to change or call it quits, you’ll walk away and seek a new love interest.

Learn From Your Experiences

Being in a relationship isn’t about getting it perfect the first time, or the second, or the third. It’s a growing experience in which you find out more about yourself: What you like, what you love, and what you could most definitely live without. Don’t think of this as a failed relationship but rather as a stepping stone to better things.

Good luck, girl, and remember: All’s fair in love and war!
